The expected revamp on The View is happening — the rumored ouster of co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck appears to be a done deal. She would join veteran co-host Joy Behar who announced she was leaving the ABC talk show after 16.5 years. Sources have confirmed speculation that Hasselbeck won’t be on The View beyond this season. According to US Weekly, conservative Hasselbeck was deemed “too extreme and right wing.” I hear ABC is already talking to potential replacements for Hasselbeck. Rumor is that Ali Wentworth was approached for the gig and passed. Former Survivor contestant Hasselbeck has been on The View since 2003. “Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a valued member of The View and has a long term contract,” ABC said in a statement.

Lorraine Bracco would be a perfect replacement for Joy! xo
Ali Wentworth would have been a good fit to replace Joy Behar–equally funny but with a softer touch.
NO!! Ali Wentworth used to be funny (15-20 yrs ago, doing those remotes on Leno’s show), but she has morphed into a frenzied, self-absorbed, babbling mess who’s exhausting to watch. Sorry to see Behar go, but it was time–she had become bitter and predictable, just phoning it in. The real loss is Hasselbeck, who was lovely and smart, and easily the best interviewer of the bunch. And if her axing is political, then it’s especially alarming–I thought Hwd was against blacklisting.
I’m sorry she is leaving. She not only was the best looking she
also was the smartest. She always had a good rebuttal to the
bleeding heart liberals.
she wasnt necessarily the smartest, but it was entertaining to have her on the show – to have 4-5 women aligned on almost every issue would make the show almost pointless. its more interesting with folks of diametrically opposed viewpoints, which EH was relative BW and her gang
I could not have said it better. You are right on target. But, I will not be sorry to see Joy go. Now they have to work on Whoopie and have her removed. Then maybe I’d go back watching the show.
It’s way overdue.
This is hilarious if it’s true she’s indeed being “ousted.” A show that likes to think it gives different viewpoints: Four liberals, one conservative, and of course she’s deemed “too extreme.” My vote to take her place: Ann Coulter.
Ann Coulter? No way!!! Never!!!
Funny you never hear about anyone being “too extreme and too left-wing”. I guess left-wingers are always the voice of reason.
That’s because there is no such thing.
People forget that Elizabeth was originally brought in because she was supposed to bring in a “younger perspective” on current topics. That’s why they had Debbie M. and Lisa Ling on the panel before her. The fact that she had a “Republican viewpoint” turned out to be ratings gold for them for a while because she always challenged her co-panelist. I’m no fan of her or her politics, but she does have opinions that some people agree with which is why she stayed on when Rosie bailed. The reality, I think, is that they want someone younger to come in to replace her to get back to that original dynamic and they will replace Joy with someone in her age range who will be more of a moderate. Imagine the fabricated controversy and ratings bump when they do something like that.
BINGO! We have a winner!
Im not a Hasselbeck fan but not for the politics. I dont t hink shes too extreme, but I do think she’s very unlikeable and maybe her Q score – like Star before her – were very low…Or maybe the show wants to go in a completely different direction. Will be interesting to see if any of this is discussed on mOnday since todays show was pre-taped. I think Joy has already confirmed her leaving so shed have to say something. I do agree if theyre going to continue with political topics they should have at least 2 Republicans or someone more fiscally conservative and still socially liberal – a moderate. I always thought Hasselbeck was a poor fit and never understood with so many good people out there, how a neophyte with very little TV experience whose claim to fame was Suvivor got the job. Shell be fine though – probably already on the phone with Fox News or will do something design related. She used to design shoes and she already has a QVC line and all her gluten free books. Shell just say shes pursuing a new opportunity or wanting to spend more time with her kids. Or they might have decided the political stuff is too controversial and want to soften it up like the Talk. I hope not because the HOT TOPICS is what makes it different. If 2 slots open up, I hope they choose at least 1 Latina…I think its time. Its a great format, I hope they dont ruin it
You hit the nail on the head. She unlikeable. I remember her on Survivor- she was the same way. She was so annoying on that show. People don’t change. She belongs in a Nunnery if shes got Holier than thou attitude. Which is what I think turns off everyone except those that are like her
How the heck did she segue from Survivor to The View? I’ve never quite understood that. It’s not like she’s smart or charming… Her husband’s family’s connections? It’s always puzzled me.
Her husband’s family has NFL connections (her husband washed out as a QB, but her brother in law was a successful starting QB for many years), not sure that would help her in the TV business, but it sure would not hurt.
Certainly one of the more successful people taking advantage of their reality show exposure.
I couldnt agree more; from Survivor to the View? She not the brightest bulb in the box by now stretch of the imagination (politics aside)
That’s a bit *if*
It’s not like US weekly is world renown for integrity in journalism.
Ann Coulter! Yes! But of course ANY conservative will be too “right wing” for them. Only one POV is ever welcome there and it ain’t the conservative one.
I’m a guy. If Coulter were on, I might actually consider watching. She is never boring and can put those biddies in their place.
If Anne Coulter was on the view alot more fans would watch the show.
Fans with single-digit IQ’s and isolated prisoners perhaps; she’s a horrible shrew and an embarrassment to conservatives and Americans
Kind of surprised about this, Elisabeth seemed to help keep the show balanced with the liberal perspectives. So how has their ratings been this season? What kind of dynamic is the show looking for now?
Here are my picks for replacements: Maggie Rodriguez (She was really great on ‘The Early Show’), Soledad O’Brien (seems like she would be more free these days since she’s been let go from CNN), Betty Nguyen (previously from CNN and CBS News), Meghan McCain, E.D. Hill.
..But I’ll bet they’ll go someone from the ‘Real Housewives’ or a complete fame whore — I hope not.
Meghan McCain and Soledad O’Brien would be great additions to The View!
No cannot stand McCain, I refuse to watch her or Ann Coulter
Interesting suggestions. McCain would probably hold her own in a way Hasselbeck never could, even though she’s quite annoying.
I LOVE Soledad O’Brien, but I’m sad to say that I think The View is below her skill set. Soledad could elevate the discussion, but honestly I’m not sure all the other women of The View could keep up. Plus, with her new traveling documentary gig she likely won’t have the availability.
Ali Wentworth was definitely my top choice to replace Joy. And maybe a young conservative comedian like Jodie Leigh Miller to replace Hasslebeck. Those seem like long shots, though. The show needs to bring in at least one woman under 35 in order to get a perspective more relatable to Millenials, and at least one woman with a fully-functioning and politically-minded brain like Wentworth. If Barbara also needs to generally retire and leave the show I think we could see it totally revamped. Having a journalist at the helm seems like a good tone to set, so perhaps a Soledad O’Brien or maybe even someone like an Anna Quindlen could co-chair the panel with Whoopi and set a tone of diverse and funny voices with serious integrity. I’m sad to see them go, but excited to see what the show might become with a major shift like this.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So she is a republican , big woop! I was hoping it would Sherri that would be asked to leave, c’mon Sherri thinks the world is flat, that just stupid at leaste Elisabeth is a bit smarter than her! I will no longer watch The View because Joy is leaving and now this!
Sherri can be funny but youre right – shes not the smartest bulb..but I guess that brings comedic moments. The View is a cushy job and the exposure leads to many, many opportunities as both Sherri and Elisabeth have shown…Wonder whats going on with Whoopi. I love her but always wonder what the heck she needs with a daytime talk show. Id think shes got enough money, shes busy with acting jobs, a comedy act, and producing The Color Purple worldwide and also an upcoming Moms Mabley movie
The number one mistake is thinking these celebs have endless sources of revenue/money. Whoopi needs a job to fund her life and lifestyle just like everybody else. She’s admitted on more than one occasion that she took The View gig because she needed a job. If you’re smart, you strike while the iron is hot – which is why she, Sherri, Joy and Elizabeth shill for themselves and other sponsors while they have a platform like The View. It’s all about being a brand nowadays. Both Joy and Elizabeth have used their various public platforms well as springboards into other opportunities. They will be fine.
I’m kind of surprised that Hasselbeck is being let go. Yes, she’s conservative, but has definitely modified her views since Rosie stormed off. I agree that Shepard is a dim bulb — always talking about weight issues, yet at the same time is the first to chow down during cooking or tasting segments, or talking about her religious faith and ogling male strippers in the same breath.
Goldberg doesn’t need the money — she’s loaded, has produced several Broadway shows. I think she just needs a job because she probably couldn’t get one elsewhere, except perhaps as a warmup to Joan Rivers on the casino circuit.
Then there’s Barbara Walters, 110 and still ticking. Amazing how she’s lasted so long — cudos to her for creating such an incredibly successful career despite a pronounced speech defect.
Dont let the door hit ya’ , overpivileged and sanctimonious whiner
Thank goodness. I stopped tuning in because of how annoying she is.
Will miss Joy though.
Just curious if you find her annoying for her personality, on camera presence or her political views. While I dont agree with her a lot and am not a Republican, I think if the show does politics , it needs to have a balanced approach. At least she was more liberal on social issues. I just think that they might have research that shows shes not likeable or they have a whole other plan for the show…or maybe research shows viewers didnt like the confrontations. IF its still going to be THE VIEW, different opinions are needed. HOpefully they wont imitate THE TALK and have 2 different people sitting in chairs and never even acknowledget it. That was hilarious…as one day Holly & Leah were replaced and there were 2 new women on the panel and nothing was said. It was like magic.
Never liked the show. Total waste of time for anybody that works for a living. What a bunch of crap.
Elisabeth is too extreme, but Joy and Whoopi are middle of the road. Uh… okay.
at least Joy and Whoopi have a sense of humor
As long as you agree with them!
As always, middle of the road depends where you paint your own lane boundaries. Middle of the road is essentially a meaningless term.
She is so extreme and thinks she is someone special when her claim to fame is “Survivor”. A big nobody who thinks she is somebody! Goodbye!
Don’t forget her ground breaking stint on”The Look For Less” on Style……
A talk show doesn’t need 5 hosts all talking (shouting?) over each other. This show’s shelf life expired a long time ago. Why doesn’t ABC just cancel this altogether and put The Bonnie Hunt Show back into production? At least she’s watchable! (And after the crappy way Queen Baba treated her on The View a couple of years ago, it’d be the best kind of karma I could think of!)
Because it does well in the ratings. Its been stable for ABC for a decade and a half when that time slot used to have a new show every year…Mike & Maty, Home Show, The Mommies etc. It was an innovate show with a new format and it was so successful that it has been copied numerous times
Bonnie Hunt?? AKA Mrs. Ratings Poison?? Mrs. Even-David-Letterman’s-Charity-Can’t-Save-Her-Career?
THAT Bonnie Hunt??
For the record, it was CBS’ meddling in Bonnie’s 2 shows that she co-produced with Letterman that killed them, and no other reason (she actually canceled “The Building” herself rather than let CBS screw with it, even though the network wanted to give it a full season run. According to Bonnie, it was not what CBS was expecting her to do). As for “Life With Bonnie”, it had a respectable 2 year run, as did her syndicated talk show, so she can produce a show that lasts longer than 12 episodes.
Because how dare she share her conservative opinions on a show called the View….. Ridiculous!
I dont think its her politics necessarily but the way she expresses them and maybe reacts when theres a disagreement. Personally she has always rubbed me the wrong way…It has to be difficult to be ganged up by 4 others a lot..Shes less extreme than the women on FNC…Shes actually had moderate views on social issues and doesnt think the Obamas are the devil. If you want extreme, tune in to Hannity
Are they paving the way for the return of Rosie?
I hope so!
So tired hearing about her kids or that gluten thing. She alone turned the gluten problem into a thing so that when you go to the store you can’t buy regular food anymore. She was so narcissistic. She made her supposed disease a problem for everyone! I’m not even gonna talk about the Sarah Palin thing.
I had no idea The View was so powerful that it could get gluten removed from the food chain. Where do you shop at that everything in the store is gluten free?
How about a normal, non-celeb woman? Is it possible their VIEW could be interesting?
Its funny you say that because thats exactly what Elisabeth was. She was a nobody – someone who lost a reality show..she must have had a really good agent. They have been doing the year of the viewer so maybe theyd run a contest for a new co-host. Stranger things have happened and a ‘nobody’ would be very cheap
Our national nightmare is over.
I think the political aspects of her firing are a red herring — probably planted by sympathetic cons looking for a fight.
The truth is, her political views (actually she was more of a talking-point dispenser than a person with opinions) are what kept her in the job for 10 years. She’s an inept interviewer and could never hold up her end of a conversation well. She was an amateur placed in the job because of her conservatism. I can’t see people whining about political bias now, it’s just not logical.
Good. She was f-ing annoying. I actually liked her on Survivor. She seemed sweet. Didn’t know then she was a raving right-wing lunatic.
Good riddance.
Elizabeth is no loss, but will sorely miss Joy. Could do without Sherry though.
Oh how I agree with you!!! Sherri is sickening and never, ever knows what she is talking about. She constantly opens mouth and insert foot. Sometime i feel like she thinks it is her show. She is the first person out the the door and always the first to respond to EVERYTHING!!! i am also tired of hearing her stupid views about marriage and raising children of which she has a very poor track record. I turn my TV off after the Doctors.
I wish they’d dump Sherri, too. She’s exhaustingly stupid. And always talking. Why not get one of Huntsman’s beautiful daughters? Or they should look for an Latina. They’ve not had a Latina yet.
They better hire another young blonde!
I’m not so sure that it’s just that she’s right wing. It’s that petulant, lip-smacking, didactic way she says everything, pushing forward at the desk, finger raised and often wagged in colleague’s faces. It can definitely be argued that the others are liberal, but they deliver their liberalism in witty, entertaining ways. Hasselback always sounds like Reese Witherspoon in “Election,” as if she’s running for president of the Girl’s League.
What was “witty” or “entertaining” about Whoopi and Joy storming off set in mid-segment because they disagreed with the views being expressed by guest Bill O’Reilly? Elizabeth Hasselbeck never did anything so confrontational, rude, and jaw-droppingly unprofessional. She isn’t the extremist on the show, it’s Whoopi and Joy, who continue to behave in the Rosie O’Donnell tradition of intolerant, bellicose, and thin-skin loony-leftism.
Whoopi and Joy are seasoned performers who know when to pull that trick out their bags for the best effect. And Bill O’Reilly is someone who was made for that move, mostly because he’s a con man who asks for (and deserves) all the explosions he routinely gets in his face.
Hasselbeck was always a deer in the headlights on the show; she wasn’t equipped for debates or interviewing when she joined, and she didn’t seem to learn on the job as the years passed. She spent a decade on that couch with a chip on her shoulder, and the other co-hosts can’t really be blamed for that. She was in the wrong job.
Seriously? From some of the clips I’ve seen, she should be getting combat pay. With the exception of Walters, the others are mental midgets compared to her.
Even as a liberal, I’m disappointed that ABC is dismissing her. Still, she was hired (obviously) as a provocateur. The problem was, as I see it, she could never back up her convictions. It was always like she cribbed her jabs from Fox News talking points. There was just no gravitas behind her conservativeness.
Not that The View was deep to begin with.
ABC should consider another conservative, but one that has some thought behind the differences of the others. To counter the other blowhards on The View, it would be great to hear a conservative that can speak eloquently -which Coulter cannot do- of their POV. But I know the demographic won’t support that.
THANK GOD
MSNBC’s Alex Witt should replace her.
There are a lot of women on cable news who could do the job. THey have to decide also if they want a single, no kids woman. I think that would be fine. But I do think if they are going to do political commentary they shouldnt have a panel of 5 liberals
Real shame that Joy is leaving since I can no longer watch her show on Current because of stupid, asinine Time-Warner. I hope the rumors are true that she’s getting a gig on CNN. Nothing like a salty old broad to keep things lively.
I really like her humour. I will miss her.
