Comedian John Mulaney is surrounding himself with some comedy heavyweights on his NBC pilot. After lengthy negotiations, Elliott Gould and Martin Short are set to co-star opposite Mulaney in his untitled multi-camera comedy, from Lorne Michaels, 3 Arts and Universal TV. Written/exec produced by Mulaney and exec produced by 30 Rock‘s Robert Carlock, the project is a young ensemble loosely based on Mulaney’s life. It centers on John (Mulaney), whose naïve, and often pointless, desire to “be a good person” challenges his friendship with his roommates Jane and Seymour. APA-repped Gould plays John’s gay neighbor. WME-repped Short plays Lou, a game show host John writes jokes for.

This is sure to be paired with the Sean Hayes/Lindsay Slone multi-cam ‘HAPPINESS’.
1986 called and they want their pilot actors back. Gosh talk about scrapping the way back machine for a cast. Here’s a clue NBC, just cause they were stars in the 70s/80s does not necessarily translate to success in a new century. I know everyone “deserves” the right to make money for themselves but really? Come on.
Disagree. Short is so fantastic (merited a recent VF profile), and Gould is always really solid (works all the time for Soderbergh–would you tell Soderbergh that he should hire “fresher” actors?)
You are so right. Who wants to watch Martin Short? What does that guy know about comedy? When was the last time he was funny? Oh yeah, just a couple of months ago on SNL! Yes, please keep the like’s of Short and Gould off TV because Josh Gad and the like are just so damn funny!
They’re playing the two roles in the show that require old men, NOT the roommates. Who better to play an old funny guy than an old funny guy? You’re telling me Martin Short isn’t funny?
What would be your preference? That they find 60+ year old actors with no credits for roles that require 60+ year old actors? Perhaps pilots could be written with no old people. Would that solve the problem? Or perhaps they could just cast Josh Duhamel and Adam Brody as the old guys. They’re pretty versatile.

They already do that. It’s called “Betty White’s Off Their Rockers.”
Martin Short and Elliot Gould are brilliant. This is shaping up to be a show I’m excited to watch. I hope it’s hit. We shall see.
Ha! The Question you are hilarious! NBC should cast you in a pilot!
@ The Question !
Wow…! Yes lets cast younger actors like David Walton who NBC has had so much success with and have the likes of him inserted into the pilots!
Elliot Gould is absolutely hilarious. I don’t think the fact that he was on TV 20-30 years ago takes away at all from his credibility. This is shaping up to be a great cast
NBC should focus on just building a good comedy instead of chasing any particular demographic. If it’s good and promoted correctly, they will come.
Ha, irony. The 1990s called and they want their played out snark back.
Short and Gould are talented and funny. Gratuitous age bashing just to convey a false sense of superiority is so weak. Good thing we have established talented people because the new kids are mostly unfunny and unmemorable. How hilarious that someone’s past successes would be considered a liability, especially considering tv “in this century” is marching towards its death.
More navel-gazing. More narcissism by children who’ve taken over the playroom. Why don’t these self-indulgent know-nothings grow up into real men and THEN write some seriously good television. Enough of the usual crap. Enough. What these “dudes” and “guys” are farting out is not comedy. If you think you’re funny (MacFarlane, are you listening?), you are not. As Harry Ruskin said, “comedy is a serious business.”
David Walton was cast in NBC’s About A Boy pilot this year, so yeah, they are doing that again.
I hope Short also works Ed Grimley into the plot somehow. Maybe the gay neighbor’s crazy brother?
