Emma Booth has been cast in ABC‘s drama pilot Gothica. Set in the present
day, the ABC Studios/Mark Gordon Co. project weaves together a mythology that incorporates the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. It centers on journalist Grace Van Helsing (Janet Montgomery) who takes over her family’s hometown newspaper. Booth plays Victor Frankenstein’s (Tom Ellis) wife Madeline Usher.
Several child actors have landed lead roles in pilots. Benjamin Stockham of NBC‘s 1600 Penn has been cast in the network’s single-camera comedy pilot About A Boy, which follows the relationship between Will (David Walton), a bachelor man-child who is going through a revolving door of women, and the young boy (Stockham) who moves in next door with his kooky single mother, Fiona (Minnie Driver). I hear the casting, which is in second position to low-rated 1600 Penn, ruffled some feathers at 20th TV, which produces 1600 Penn. (About A Boy is at Universal TV). Wyatt Oleff has been cast in ABC comedy pilot Middle Age Rage as the 11-year-old son of the lead, Carol (Annie Mumolo), a middle-aged wife and mother. Madison Moellers plays the daughter of another lead, Tanner (Jason Lee) from CBS drama pilot’s Second Sight. She is with CESD. Additionally, River Alexander and Brooke Sorenson were recently cast as Rob Riggle’s son and daughter in the Fox comedy pilot The Gabriels. Both are with Coast To Coast.

So Robbie Amell and Ben Stockham both have leads in pilots. Death knell for the already creaking 1600 Penn?
wow, i just read back my comment above and I sound like an idiot. Sorry. Nevermind.
Why were feathers ruffled at 20th? Did they REALLY think 1600 has a shot at coming back in the fall? And if they’re bothered the kid is going elsewhere, they should have signed him to a holding deal.
It’s weird, I predicted an ARCTU alumna (Jonathan Slavin) would head for Spy, and one (Paget Brewster) did.
I predicted Benjamin Stockham would be playing someone named Marcus (in Spy) and he will (in About a Boy). I’m not sure he is the ideal choice for the role, but he’s a talented kid.
wonder if the self congratulatory twitter happy folks at 1600 penn will tweet congrats to the kid on this one.
None of these kids are actually the center of the show. The shows are about adults and the kids just happen to be there as well. When I hear young leads, I’m thinking shows like Boy Meets World or The Wonder Years. Those are examples of young leads because it focuses on the kids. These shows don’t especially that Middle Age Rage show. Yeah, that one makes no sense. How would a show about being middle age have a young lead? Get out of here with that hot garbage. Maybe if the shows actually did center on the kids it would actually be interesting but wait that never works. i.e. Boy Meets World and Wonder Years.
Although it sounds like an interesting premise I hesitate to get too excited or attached to anything ABC does… They cancel their new programming left, right and center. I fell in love with 666 Park Avenue when WHAM, 10 episodes in it gets cancelled. Sadly, its a common occurrence.
For the most part I agree…the kids are along for the ride. But About a Boy is…well…about a BOY. Two of them actually, the kid and the neighbor an adult man still acting like a boy. It’s a buddy comedy and the kid is a lead.
