Fox 2000 is in final negotiations to acquire film rights to J. Courtney Sullivan’s upcoming novel The Engagements. Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea of Pacific Standard will produce. Marisa Paiva is the exec at the studio. Sullivan is the author of Maine and Commencement, and The Engagements will be published by Knopf in June. The novel tells a deeply romantic story that follows a diamond engagement ring from the 1930s to the present, connecting five very different relationships in surprising and unexpected ways. Witherspoon might be part of an ensemble cast. The book deal was brokered by ICM Partners on behalf of Brettne Bloom at Kneerim, Williams & Bloom.
Among the projects Witherspoon and Papandrea have at Fox is the Gillian Flynn novel Gone Girl. That project is looking more and more like David Fincher’s next film, and with Witherspoon producing but not starring, it has become a coveted project among actresses.

The phrase “a diamond is forever” was developed because there was a second market backlash against the slavery-like conditions faced by diamond miners (conditions that persist in many places today). Human rights activists where encouraging people to buy and sell old diamonds as opposed to buy new ones in protest so the conglomerate now known as DeBeers hired Gerety’s agency to help them market around changing their labor practices.
So after killing us with her years RomComs, she is going to snatch up every book written by a woman to find her comeback? Stick a fork in me! I’m Done!
Then Witherspoon can relate. She is wearing one of “those” diamonds on her left hand! Great project for her!
It’s official: she’s done for.
Witherspoon is a nightmare. Evelyn is facilitating her bad behavior. Bruna Papandrea is not nice to work with. Sadly Witherspoon not lived up to her talent nor is she good to work with.
Whoever is advising her should advise her not to be so unkind to talented people. It’s not working.
Witherspoon has had success in movies where there were strong producers with strong scripts. Election, Walk The Line, Legally Blond speak to that. Now that she thinks she’s the boss of her career it’s clear she’s in over her head. Her taste and judgment overseeing material is poor. She’s better off being an actress for hire.
the comments on this article are pathetic. the author of the book is a class act; bright and humble and in love with her craft. but if you don’t like Witherspoon (which in typical Hollywood self-centered blowhard fashion is all you pathetic creeps can talk about)…well she’s got more talent and success than you and your bitterness did or ever will. now serve me my cappuccino with real milk, none of the soy crap you like.
