Fox has added two more projects to its event series development slate: The Run Of His Life: The People Vs. O.J. Simpson (working title), from Nina Jacobson (The Hunger Games franchise) and Brad Simpson (World War Z) and based on legal journalist Jeffrey Toobin’s best-selling book of the same name about the Simpson trial,
and Shōgun, from producers Michael De Luca (The Social Network) and Nigel Williams (Elizabeth I) based on the best-selling novel by James Clavell. Both hail from FX Prods. The network plans to launch its first limited/event series next year. “These are both epic stories — one fiction, one fact — that have captivated millions of people worldwide,” said Fox’s Shana C. Waterman, SVP Event Series & Multi-Platform Programming. “They’re riveting and emotional, with unique historic backdrops that lend themselves to the high-quality, dramatic event series we’re looking to make.”
Written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (The People vs. Larry Flint), The Run Of His Life takes viewers behind the scenes of The Trial of the Century, which culminated with Simpson’s shocking acquittal of the murders of wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. This is not Fox’s first crack at Simpson: In 2006, network was set to air during the November sweep an interview with Simpson based on his proposed book If I Did It, which was going to be published by ReganBooks, an imprint owned by Fox owner News Corp. The book would have offered up Simpson’s hypothetical take on how he would have murdered Simpson and Goldman. Both it and the interview were eventually scrapped amid swift public outcry.
The Shogun adaptation has some big shoes to fill. NBC’s 1980 12-hour limited series starring Richard Chamberlain still ranks as one of the most-watched TV events in history, along with garnering critical praise. Set in the 17th century, the story is told from the perspective of British hero John Blackthorne, a sailor who rises from outsider to samurai while being used as a pawn in Japanese leader Toranaga’s struggle to reach the top of the ruling chain, or Shōgun.
Shōgun and The Run Of His Life join two previously announced limited series in development — Wayward Pines, from M. Night Shyamalan, and Blood Brothers, from Bruce C. McKenna, Gary Randall and Timothy Scott Bogart.

O.J. Simpson=stupid idea! Actually, what I remember was the travesty of justice! Guy getting away with murder! Fox wants to put this garbage on tv? BTW O.J. How is that search for the “real” murderer working out for you? Here’s a hint-look in the mirror. Another Fox program for me to avoid like the plague•••Geez…
They should end the OJ trial with that shot of the streets of Los Angeles filled with cheering African Americans while a beaming Al Sharpton cries “This is great for America!”
I hope its as well done as the Original. Including the casting. Please don’t hire Tom Cruise
Shogun? For real? White hero is Asia story is so last century!
EXACTLY!
I viewed Mariko as the real hero.
FOX will have huge Loser on its hand if they do the film about the OJ SIMPSON TRIAL. We all know how it ended and it is still to much of a hot potato. When we the verdict came through it divided up this country. It was sick. He got away with murder and yet African Women & African American Men were applauding the “Not Guilty Verdict”. what got me “African American women in a battered women’s shelter” were applauding this miscarriage of justice. The Jurors were just as Racist as the KKK. I am sure “Johnnie Cochran is now taking over for Lucifer in Hell”
Please! Not all Blacks thought he was innocent. When I went down to the courthouse to see Dr. Cotton testify, I was waiting for someone in the media to ask me a question and no one did. All he whites interviewed were pro guilty and the blacks interviewed were pro innocent. The media played a large part is framing this as white vs. black.
What a lot of people still fail to acknowledge was that the differences in the reactions of people regarding the verdict of that trial was about issues tremendously bigger than that of a man accused of killing his (ex)wife.
Although I do recall (for better or worse) precisely where I was during the OJ chase, I pride myself in the comfort of knowing that I watched not a SINGLE MINUTE of trial coverage on this ridiculous blemish in journalism and television history.
Let me guess: In the new SHOGUN, everybody speaks English, there are tons of blood-spurting, on-screen decapitations, and Blackthorne will be played by Ashton Kutcher.
Hellooooo? Fox! The 90′s called, they want they M.O.W. back
I think this is one of the biggest misconceptions about the OJ trial. A lot of the African American community thought he did it, but also thought the police involved were corrupt. After decades of mistreatment by the authorities, the community as a whole was happy to see that the cops could actually lose. Of course this overlooks the loss of two innocent lives in the midst of the whole ordeal which is terribly sad and insensitive, but the fact is, a large portion of black people thought the cops tried to frame a guilty man and it was those officers fault that OJ got off. They weren’t applauding OJ’s “innocence”, but the LAPD’s miscalculations in trying to force a guilty verdict.
Well stated. I understood that too, but these murders were way too heinous for me to feel satisfied or happy in any way about the verdict. I’m somewhat shocked that the media manipulation of the case needs to be explained on an entertainment/media blog.
Damn, white folks still mad about OJ. Shit is too funny.
It doesn’t matter whatsoever what color OJ is what eats me up is he was found not guilty of butchering 2 people that a jury of morons could have clearly seen that he was guilty. I want Casey Anthony to pay for what she did to that precious little girl.I’ed give OJ a free ride to get her..
LOL white folks have a long memory when it’s one of us, but they blanked out the whole Bush Administration.
I hope the OJ Simpson project is greenlighted and broadcast. Finally, all the OJ haters will become apoplectic and collectively wet their pants!
No, they won’t. Am I the only person who has actually READ the book on Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin? Toobin painted O.J. Simpson as obviously guilty and depicted the prosecutors as incompetent fools. The people who hate this project will be fans of Simpson and Marcia Clark.
HA!!! I am reading this book RIGHT now!! I’ve got like 90 pages left. Too funny.
My impetus was the fact that I was in high school when the trial/acquittal occurred, and recently I was like “How the HELL did he get acquitted? What happened in that fucking trial?!”
And well, when I found Toobin’s book in the library I was thrilled–great writer.
The DA’s office lost the case when they decided to try the case downtown instead of in Brentwood where OJ lived and where the murders happened. They were stupid for transferring it downtown they knew the jury pool downtown would be predominately black and other minorities but they thought they could win anyway. If they had tried OJ in Santa Monica which has the courthouse that covers Brentwood he’d have been found guilty by an actual jury of his peers. He was obviously guilty and he got away with it but karma caught up with him and he will die in jail in Nevada very soon.
There was nothing crooked about that detective team. That was a strategy plan the defense came up with and it worked. Done with OJ. He is where he belongs.
If you had watched it you would know why he got off. The prosecution botched everything so the jury had no choice. We all know he did it but they couldn’t prove it because the security of evidence was crap – blood samples left in vans to cook in the LA sun unsupervised, the Bronco left unsecure, leaving speculation that anybody that wanted to could have access and plant evidence, etc. etc. Unfortunately I watched every minute of it and I was appalled at the incompetence of the LA forensic staff, the prosecuting attornies, and witnesses. I wasn’t shocked at the verdict at all because they could not prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. The defense made sure there was plenty of doubt. No doubt he did it but the abundance of doubt that the case was handled professionally and securely got him off.
Exactly. I remember the closing arguments where Johnny Cochran was basically screaming racism at the jury and the prosecution never addressed it.
On another note, CNN’s ‘theme song’ for the OJ Simpson trial is forever burned in my memory.
SHOGUN! I remember my mother yelling at me to get out of the room and not to talk to her when she watched that series. When your a kid it felt like that show was on for a month. So recently mom and I were so sick we recorded and watched it together, what a hoot. We were both astounded how there were no Japanese subtitles. My mom loved the book, as we watched she kept muttering “I seriously do not remember Richard standing silently and staring so much. It almost turned into a drinking game when Japanese was spoken and there was no character to explain what was just said. I seriously am baffled how Americans fell in Love with this series when you never got to know half the characters. Hope they shoot in Japan again and take advantage of all the historical sites. Do not know how they are going to get the public excited for this again. In those days everyone had read the book. Good luck, it’s great material, looking forward to getting the Japanese translations.
Cumberbatch has a huge japanese following. He’d be perfect for the Blackthorne role but hope he doesnt do it. Time to focus 100% on his film career,
