Fox has handed early renewals to midseason drama The Following and Tuesday comedies New Girl, Raising Hope and The Mindy Project. They join recently renewed veteran Bones, with negotiations for a fifth season of Glee ongoing. Per star Kevin Bacon’s deal, The Following pickup is for a 15-episode second season, same as Season 1. It will likely return next midseason. The Following, from creator/executive producer Kevin Williamson and Warner Bros. TV, has emerged as a big DVR performer, rising to No. 2 broadcast drama and No. 3 drama overall this season in Live+7 ratings.
Fox hinted at the renewal of New Girl, Raising Hope and The Mindy Project last week when it slotted repeats of the three comedies on its summer schedule. New Girl, from creator Liz Meriwether, Chernin Entertainment and 20th TV, is Fox’s highest-rated comedy. It has been renewed for a third season. Raising Hope, from creator Greg Garcia and 20th TV, has been a great utility player, delivering solid ratings wherever dispatched by the network. Mindy Kaling’s freshman Mindy Project, from Universal TV and 3 Arts has been soft in the ratings but has done well with critics and is a favorite of Fox brass.

New ‘Man Of Steel’ Television Spot #6

Here’s to hoping the writing staff of The Following can actually keep it moving next year. They certainly aren’t servicing the talents of Kevin Bacon or any character in the series.
Puhleeze. The show rocks. Kevin Bacon is awesome. I love him. He’s badass. This show is my new addiction. Great premise.
Yeah, if only he could shake his demons or the pacemaker…
I just expected more.
Rocks? Are you mad? The characters get stupider with each episode. The utter stupidity of the characters last week had me screaming at my TV! The actors are good, but the material sucks!
I couldn’t agree with you more, this show makes the entire FBI look like they’re Fat, Bald and Ignorant instead of being the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I mean if a prisoner really could have that much power, they would put him in a hole so deep he’d never see the light of day.
I agree with…sigh…the user “Smelly Belly” (seriously, man?).
The show’s not serving anyone’s talents. The pilot was a scary, creepy, well-lit, well-directed, moody piece with some great visuals. The show quickly became a typical procedural, and episode 3 — where Bacon’s character had to save his sister — was nothing more than filler. At which point, I was done. And yet STILL gave it one more shot.
And was rewarded with boredom.
Show is awesome. I love it. So creepy. That nanny girl. Yikes. Live for Mondays.
So glad for all these shows, but especially Raising Hope!
I’m surprised this series is successful. The last episode was good, but in earlier episodes there more contrived, dumb situations than I can recall in any series in a long time. I mean, I wouldn’t go around trying to find a group of bloodthirsty serial killers without a gun. Then when Kevin Bacon finally got a gun, he couldn’t seem to keep it in his possession and he keeps getting his pacemaker zapped with a stun gun.
Yeah the pilot script was much better on the page. To actually watch it is to want one hour of your life back.
I thought close to the same: the script was there, but it didn’t quite pop. I thought maybe it was the director. I still enjoy it though.
Great news for New Girl and Raising Hope. I don’t watch the Mindy Project and I refuse to watch anything starring Kevin Bacon.
I absolutely love the news about the Following! I am addicted to this show week after week and I love the pairing with Bones. The Following keeps my attention and I hope that continues. It has a fast pace and I really enjoy the characters. I am glad for Kevin Bacon.
Additionally, New Girl is my 2nd favorite comedy behind Big Bang. Inventive, Funny and Different. The chemistry is just “there”! They all work and it is amazing. Love it! Congrats
Interesting comment on the state of network comedy seeing RH, NG and TMP receive early renewals… Not that they don’t deserve to return. (I’m actually a fan!) But none of the three are runaway hits.
I think New Girl has a very solid chance of growing its audience in its third year. Unlike The Mindy Project, which I imagine is only renewed as a slot-filler.
The Mindy Project has a ton of potential and is starting to shift and settle into itself a bit after the post-hiatus cast changes. I enjoy Mindy’s voice, I did even before her book which was funny, and she had a hand in some nice work on The Office. If you don’t see what this could be, I don’t know what to tell you. So happy for them. If The Office and Parks and Rec got the chance to become the shows they did, The Mindy Project deserves the opportunity even more. There is far less rocky a road for this show than those others. Chris Messina does a great job, it pairs well with New Girl, the supporting cast is becoming a quirky workplace family. Glad Fox renewed it.
Thanks, PR department!
I think you’re right. I didn’t like this show much at first but my wife did so I continued to watch it with her. After a handful of episodes it really started finding its legs and got funny.
How the hell did Mindy Project even deserve a renewal? This show is utterly terrible with a stupid plot and bad acting by its “star”? FOX must be desperate to try and snag a hit on one of their comedies, since they have been unsuccessful in that department for many years time.
While I’l admit Mindy isn’t the best show on television, it’s still pretty good and has room to grow. Also, cancelling the first show ever with an Indian lead strait out of the gate would have given them a lot of flack they don’t really need.
Is The Following a masterpiece?Nah. Does it have its’preposterous moments that totally stretch believability?Yeah. Does it have huge plot holes you can drive a truck through?Yeah.Having said all that-you know what?I’m thrilled it has been renewed! I almost stopped watching this show because of its’ridiculous moments, but, something keeps me watching it. I’m actually ENJOYING watching it. There are higher rated, better written programs out there, but, they are not as much fun as The Following. In today’s stress-filled world, sometimes you just wanna watch something that you actually enjoy watching. I for one am glad it is coming back for another season.
f*kin ditto! great post!
i totally agree! It’s TV.. it’s entertainment! I love the show.
After last week I cannot watch it anymore.
What are some of the plot holes?
Will the same cast be returning to the following…
Someone has got to be trading sexual favors to get Mindy renewed. That steaming pile just gets worse with every episode.
Maybe it’s just me… (and most TV viewers)… but as much as I wanted to love The Mindy Project, I deleted it from the DVR list weeks ago. I know comedy is subjective, does anyone actually look forward to seeing this show??
Check out the most recent shows. Seth Rogan and BJ Novak were on recently, and the writers are doing more subtle, interesting things with Mindy and Danny (earlier Mindy would occasionally say something outright mean about his divorce and person but they’ve backed off of that because it was just too off putting for people we’re supposed to be rooting for). Morgan grows on you. It’s not perfect but it can get and has been getting better for sure. I hope it gets a chance.
Sounds like someone works on the show. Glad you get to work for another season but come on.
And your last sentence, you hope it gets a chance???
Isn’t an early renewal a third chance… pickup / back nine / second season.
Not even close. I don’t even know someone who works on the show. I’ve had friends and family members working on shows that I’ll call crap to their face because they know it’s bad and it’s a job. It’s not about having a horse in the race.
Getting a chance isn’t just getting back 9 or a renewal. Parks and Rec got the time it needed to find its voice. For some shows, getting a chance involves the ability to earn its way for what it really is in season 2, not what it stumbled around trying to be in that first season. If you don’t lock that in before the end of the first season, it’s gonna need time in season 2 as almost a restatement of who these characters are and what stories can come from them. Who knows, maybe they showed Fox some stuff that hasn’t aired yet and it comes together in a great way. We’ve been seeing episodes that were shot either before the hiatus or before the cast changes so it’s hard to say whether they’ll need that time next year. When shows try to be good instead of appealing to the lowest denominator, I want to root for them even if I don’t watch because I think it helps everybody in the long run, audience and people in the industry. I just happen to find Mindy’s voice interesting.
Fine you don’t work on the show. And your statement reads fine. I just disagree… especially with what you say at the end… I think all shows try and be good, even the ones that appeal to the lowest common denominator, some just aren’t good and they need to go away to make room for those that might be better. I think that helps in the long run. If the bad shows don’t get out of the way who knows what’s not being made that we’re missing.
And when you say “I want to root for them even if I don’t watch…” I think the networks would rather you watch.
This proves the fix is in. Mindy is a horrible show on every level.
I’m glad they’re giving the Mindy Project a few more episodes. The show has definitely lost a little creativity from the premiere episode but there is strong potential there. mikesdailyjukebox.com
Mindy has had me laughing laoudly since the pilot I got to pre screen here in Chicago! Mindy and the New Girl are the funniest hour of television all week! Laugh out Loud hysterical! Too bad they cannot do a cross over where Schmidt and Mindy go on a date. Those two are comic gold! SB
They should film that as a special and show it every Christmas!
Glad for New Girl. Don’t watch the other shows so won’t comment but NG just has that something. The chemistry is amazing. Reminds me of Friends and Seinfeld.
Love ‘New Girl’.
As for ‘The Mindy Project’- ugh. blech. barf. poop. ick. ow. ugh.
Couldn’t care less about the other 2.
Replace Kevin Bacons pacemaker with an iron man pacemaker and let him go totally Jack Bauer next season…i’ll buy that)
I used to think Mindy Kaling MUST have unimpeachable video evidence of someone committing adultery – someone married to an extremely wealthy spouse and who has much more to lose than just the usual high-powered influential cheater. With this news, I realize I was being ridiculous.
She has proof of murder. She has HiDef video of someone well above a network honcho – like the Chair or CEO of a network’s global parent company – killing at least a couple of people, something perhaps involving children. And maybe a puppy. And whomever it is does it with their own hands, and narrates what they’re doing as they do it.
That post was hysterical.
The episode where Kevin Bacon is held hostage most of the episode but acts like he’s in control was the best one so far.
I do feel that Kevin Bacon’s character isn’t really taking a lead on the show. I know they have to focus on the other characters, but sometimes I feel like he is there as a “hey look we have a veteran actor” on the show and letting the lesser known characters get more time to grow on screen. I think they need to put him up front and center more, which will help the show find a better focus. There are moments on the show that he is awesome (like the hostage episode) and others where he is so secondary. It is almost suffocating not to see him do more.
Love New Girl, and I am not surprised by the renewal. I laugh out loud every episode. As for The Mindy Project, looks like I am in the minority here because I love it. I get her, I get the humour, and there are so many story lines to be had here. I like the new layer of her relationships with her patients, and the progressing realtionship with Danny. The Following started off strong and I thought I was going to be kept on the edge of my seat, but I have found myself a little bored. I feel like I am always one step ahead of the characters the whole time, and there is no shock factor going for it now… it is just too predictable. Maybe the writers will kick things up a notch in upcoming episodes, or I think Fox will lose some followers.
I don’t get all the mixed comments on the above. So I’m going to break it down:
The Following – If this show were on cable, it would be better because the show itself could be all TV-M (for mature). But it is not. So that in itself is limiting. Now in terms of plot holes and the stretches of the believable… It is still growing as a show. The entire premise is sort of far fetched. But it doesn’t make it a bad show. Yes, I expected more out of Kevin Bacon. Do I feel like the supporting characters are weak? Some yes, some no. Surprisingly, I think the show is doing well. I think they can only do so much with 15 episodes. But I like the short episode order, because there is less filler. I feel the show is moving a reasonable pace. Do I think the show has potential to churn out another good 2nd season? I honestly don’t know. I do know it got renewed. But expecting the show to return after a long hiatus may hurt it. But who knows, that time might bring up the quality even more. The Following is more believable than Bones in the past two seasons. I don’t compare it to 24 at all. Fox does not have much in a way of dramas this season other Touch (which I was surprised has not cancelled yet), Bones, and Glee (thought can’t really say it is a drama). So the renewal was not a surprised. They needed it.
Raising Hope – It’s a consistent show, reasonable to watch. I stopped watching myself because I lost interest.
New Girl – I only watch it for Schmidt. Enough said. So yeah, it deserved the renewal.
Mindy Project – I loved the holiday episode. I loved it. If only the show was consistent at that level. I think the lead girl is good, and so are the male characters. They need a stronger second girl character and a better handle on the writing. But the show is getting better. The first few episodes were pretty weak but I think the show found its footing. And I agree, the show needs to be allowed to grow.
I am absolutely obsessed with The Following…. This show keeps my attention the whole way through and is written to capture an audience. I am so Happy it’s coming back. More then looking forward to it.
I’m sorry are you watching the same show that we are all watching? this show is awesome Kevin Bacon and all the other actors are awesome, and every single episode is great and I can’t wait to see the following week!
I love the following so excited for another season. Yes there were some “filler” episodes but that just gave u all the subtle things you needed to know for the next one. It keeps me on the edge of my seat thinking anyone could be a bad guy
Funny how so many are saying the show wasn’t good, yet you’ve obviously watched the season lol . I guess you didn’t dislike it that much…ijs
But I love this show!!! It was as good as I thought I’d be, if not better!!! I enjoyed all the little cult members and everything. Good times great Monday nights….can’t wait for next season to start.
New girl is the best comedy on TV. It received 4 Emmy nominations so they are obviously doing something right!!! The chemistry is amazing. All 4 characters are so good in their own right but Schmidt is so freakin funny. His quick delivery is so good!!!!
The Following is the best show on television. hope it is coming back?
