George Lucas was asked by Bloomberg Businessweek if the three members of the original Star Wars cast would return for Episode VII. His response — “We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation. So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’ ” Pausing, he said “Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.” But he did add, “I won’t say whether the negotiations were successful or not.” Deadline’s Mike Fleming reported yesterday that Fisher told Palm Beach Illustrated magazine on the record that she would be back as Princess Leia. We’ll see. Disney confirmed in January that J.J. Abrams would direct Star Wars: Episode VII. Abrams, his longtime producing partner Bryan Burk, and Bad Robot are producing along with Kathleen Kennedy under the Disney/Lucasfilm banner.

Great. Here are the titles they can use: A New Diet. The Botox Strikes Back. Return of the Stairlift.
I hope that it is true that all 3 actors will return for episode 7 and beyond. in my opinion what was sorely missing from the prequel trilogy was the absence of any of the main actors who help make Star Wars the phenomenon that it became. but my number 1 New Hope is that critics and Internet naysayers will silence their negative rhetoric about the actors’ ages (a nonsensical argument at best) and wait to see the finished product before passing judgement. Personally, my main reason for wanting to see the new Star Wars films is the chance to see the original iconic actors in there iconic roles on the big screen again.
What was missing from the prequels was a competent director and a decent script.
I agree with you. It’s tiresome (and sophomoric) to harp on the ages of these actors. Wasn’t Alec Guinness one of the best parts of the original Star Wars?
But just wait.. in a few months when some unknown 20 something actor is cast in a central role, these same “critics” will be screaming that the casting is off and Ep 7 has already been derailed.
I’m actually happy about their ages. From what I’m hearing the first trilogy is gonna focus on the original cast while the following trilogy will focus on their offspring. Wether this is true or not, I am still very excited to see the original cast back in the mix. Hopefully they won’t rely on over use of CG in this one. I think that was a major fault of the prequel trilogy
Please someone, say this is a prank?
Negotiations with Mark Hamil:
Hamil: George, I want $1 million. I think I’m worth it.
Lucas: We’ll give you $500 and free lunch.
Hamil: I’ll take it.
I like how Disney thinks its cute that they’ll not confirm that Ford, Fisher and Hamill will be back in some capacity in Star Wars: Episode VII. Why they continue to obfuscate is beyond me.
Sure it has to do with money, because I’m sure all three could ask a fairly high price, no matter how small or big their roles will be. But if Disney does not make a deal with them, then I see no point in seeing the new trilogy (and the only issues I have with Abrams is the damn lens flairs).
And they know a lot of fans feel the same way.
So lets admit that Disney is perusing them, lets admit that while no contracts have been “officially” signed, yes fans, they will be in it.
Stop all this silly speculation and move forward with the casting rumors for the progeny of the Solo’s and Skywalker’s. As silly as that can be as well, I would rather waste my time on that.
Yeah, it’s getting a bit silly, especially since we all know Ford, Fisher, and Hamill probably won’t be the main characters driving the action at this point.
However, I can understand Disney wanting to build up the announcement for this news. It’s something most fans thought would never happen and is the first sequel to the original trilogy.
There’s nothing particularly exciting about hearing which young actor might play a character the general public has never heard of. Rumors like that wouldn’t be much different from casting news for the prequels.
What about Billy Dee??
I think that would be great fun. None of them are getting any younger and as a die hard fan I would love to see this happen.
It’s good they will include the people who made Star Wars such a worldwide success. However, the age thing could be an issue. Carrie Fisher to me still looks beautiful.Have not seen Mark Hamil recently,so,won’t comment on him. The one I’d really be concerned about would be Harrison Ford.Let me put it this way•••yikes!!! By the way, hopefully there will not be ANY stunts done by the actors themselves. Just sayin’…
Have you seen how good of shape Harrison Ford is in at his age? He’s freakin’ ripped.
That’s a Resolution “package”

Sean, none of the original actors were in the prequels because THEY WERE PREQUELS. I.e. the “iconic characters” you love so much WEREN’T EVEN BORN YET IN THE STORY.
I’m sure JJ Abrams – known for wanting absolute secrecy – is secretly fuming at George (and Carrie, though who can really reign in the bi-polar firecracker) for this lapse in protocol.
JB, I’m fully aware that the original actors could not possibly have portrayed Han, Luke, and Leia in the prequel trilogy. That’s a given, so please save your ALL-CAPS for someone else. I was simply trying to make my point that a Star Wars film that doesn’t feature these actors and the chemistry, talent, and charm they bring to the party, has zero chance of capturing the magic of the original trilogy. That’s not to say a Star Wars film with all-new actors can’t be great. But most fans want to return to the wonder and excitement they felt in ’77, ’80, and ’83. For that, you need Harrison, Mark, and Carrie. And let’s not forget Billy.
The way to get around not prominently featuring the 3 main actors is to take a page from what Joss Whedon did w/ Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye in The Avengers movie. Introduce the 3 of them at the beginning of Ep 7, then somehow freeze them in carbonite, and then thaw them out in Ep 9
I think they’d still be good. Let’s hope Abrams gives them a good deal
