UPDATE MONDAY 6:30 AM: NBC has officially announced Heidi Klum as a new judge on America
‘s Got Talent, marking – marking the first time that the summer series reality has added a fourth judge. “As we look to develop an act that will get the world’s attention, we and the contestants will benefit from Heidi’s international sensibility and understanding of what works in today’s global entertainment industry,” NBC’s head of alternative Paul Telegdy said.
PREVIOUS SUNDAY 1 PM: NBC is expanding the judging panel of America’s Got Talent to four judges with the addition of Project Runway host Heidi Klum for the upcoming eighth season. NBC is expected to make an official announcement soon. Klum joins returning judges Howie Mandel and Howard Stern and new judge Melanie Brown aka Mel B. For its first seven seasons, AGT had a three-person judging panel, most recently with Stern, Mandel and Sharon Osbourne last season. Fox’s American Idol has gone back and forth between a three- and four-judge panel, while NBC’s The Voice and Fox’s The X Factor have only featured four mentors. TMZ broke the news of Klum’s appointment after obtaining a photo of the set of AGT‘s New Orleans auditions that features the judges board with her name alongside those of Stern, Mandel and Brown. In addition to Project Runway, Klum hosts the German version of Next Top Model.

While Howard will enjoy looking at Heidi he’s not going to be happy with the four judge thing. He’s constantly bitching that four is too much on Idol. She just better be on time.

A big mistake. Not Heidi per say but having four judges. The stars of this show are the performers. Look at how the other talent competitions shows have fallen after expanding the judging panels to four. Takes the spotlight to the wrong place. Plus didn’t they hire Howard Stern as “the star.” This will only dilute his time.

I love Heidi on Runway, but I don’t think AGT is a good fit for her.
On Runway she’s perfect because she would be an ideal client for the designers, here.. Well, she just couldn’t judge those “talents.”
The four judge panel is lame here because the tie-breaker is obviously Stern, but if it’s the easy and kindly judges v one real judge, it all goes to heck.

As long as the two Howards are in. It’s a sign of the business when they can’t find any more heavyweight female judges. Although, it’s not exactly a prestigious assignment. I only watch the last episode or two anyway. It can be torture before then. So, I don’t envy the judges.
I like this choice – Heidi is sophisticated and beautiful and it will be fun to see her trade quips with Howard who by his own admission is neither. Plus everyone on the panel has a different area of expertise which should make for some interesting exchanges. Well played!

Isn’t AGT a ‘talent competition show’? Shouldn’t talent be ‘judged’ by experts in the field they are competeting? These shows will continue their downwards spiral until producers/network realizes no one cares about big names…they want to hear what real experts have to say.
This has Kelly Brook written all over it… Klum will probably get axed by the end of the week hopefully.
