The Dwayne Johnson-starrer Hercules already set Rufus Sewell to co-star as Autolycus. Now Ian McShane, Joseph Fiennes, Rebecca Ferguson (BBC’s The White Queen), Aksel Hennie (Headhunters) and John Hurt have come aboard, Paramount and MGM said today. Ryan Condal wrote the screenplay for the action film, based on Radical Studio’s graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars, Evan Spiliotopoulos rewrote it and Brett Ratner is directing and producing with Barry Levine and Beau Flynn. Production is set to begin in May and the movie will be released July 25, 2014.
The plot: After renouncing his mythological origins, Hercules lives in exile and fights as a mercenary for hire alongside his loyal but weary comrades. Hercules and his crew will face their most challenging labor yet when one battle forces the man behind the myth to question everything he once believed, and reconsider the truth behind his own legend.
McShane is represented by ICM, Gallant Management, Independent and Nelson, Davis, Wetzstein; Sewell by WME, Parseghian Planco and Julian Belfrage Associates; Fiennes by WME, Anonymous and Roger Charteris; Ferguson by Tavistock Wood, London and Actors in Scandinavia; Hennie by WME and Untitled Entertainment; and Hurt by Independent Talent, 42 and John Crosby Management.

So the race is on between Paramount and NU IIMAGES/ Millenium? In 2014 we’re getting two ‘HERCULES’ movies? The $70 mil NU IMAGES production – scripted by Sean (Conan) Hood with Renny Harlin directing – is set to start in May in Bulgaria. One is bound to be a turkey.
WOW…they are putting a strong cast together on this.
I’m going to give Brett Ratner the benefit of the doubt. It will be far more interesting than just assuming this film will suck.
The Rock going to be working with british actors he’s going to have to take his acting to another level. Brett Ratner is going to come at this with a fresh perspective also as it’s an opportunity to show himself as a director that can be taken seriously.
I understand this is a more GROUNDED version of the Hercules myth. Very grounded. It’s going to be grounded. It will be a grounded tale of good versus evil, and, ultimately, of redemption — but with a lot of heart.
Grounded, though. Grounded grounded grounded. Gotta make sure it’s grounded. You wanna keep it grounded. Grounded. The watchword here is grounded.
Having just watched G.I. Joe: Retaliation, I can report that Dwayne Johnson is extremely, not to say even excessively, buff. In fact, he has never been buffer. He is at his buffest ever.
