There’s been so much Hulk talk lately. The direct-to-DVD film from Marvel - Iron Man and Hulk: Heroes United -
was originally slated for an April 23 release date but now won’t come out until December 3. Much has been made of the rumors of World War Hulk or Planet Hulk being adapted into live action films. Then Mark Ruffalo tweeted this week that he won’t play Hulk again until The Avengers 2. All of which is just creating more speculation around a third standalone Bruce Banner/Hulk movie this time with Mark Ruffalo. The latest to weigh in is Joss Whedon who tells Deadline:
I didn’t actually read World War Hulk so I’m not sure how I’d adapt it.
Mark and I loved the Hulk and went over and over the concept of rage and how it should manifest, and that part of it was fascinating to both of us. But when it comes time for the Hulk he has to put on the silliest damn pajamas you ever saw, a tiara made of balls, and a bunch of dots on his face and growl around like an idiot. The real heart of the experience ultimately becomes playing Banner, and the thing that people fell in love with was Banner because I think Mark has you from the first time he shows up.
The Hulk is the most difficult Marvel property because it’s always about balance. Is he a monster? Is he a hero? Are you going to root for a protagonist who spends all his time trying to stop the reason you came to the movie from happening? It’s always a dance. I don’t think the first two movies nailed it, but I don’t envy them the task. It was easier to have him in a group than to build everything around him. I don’t think there would be any problem getting a movie together that had enough Banner, even if there was also Hulk. But if he was only Hulk for the entire movie I think Mark at some point would go, why am I here? I would be less inclined to pursue a storyline where the Hulk is only ever the Hulk.

I’m sick of allegedly creative people constantly talking about “properties.” Whedon, get back to doing something original.
That’s what Hollywood is making these days, because that’s what the public is paying to see. And if you don’t think it takes creativity to adapt a “property” then you clearly aren’t doing it for a living.
KLM, I’m with you, buddy. Why aren’t the original creators consulted?
You know, the guys who actually dreamed up these characters and wrote their stories and drew their lives.
Sure, many of the greats have passed, but it would be classy and dignified if the contemporary “stewards” of this material, reminded the world about the original creators and artists who gave us this great intellectual property which our generation is simply hitching a ride on.
For a word picture, visualize a glorious shark cutting through the ocean with numerous little scavengers riding above its’ dorsal fin.
NOTHING is original…every film and tv show ever made has been derived in some way from biblical stories, myths, books, plays, etc…Even Jaws, first type of movie of its kind and a friggin classic was based off of a novel…but the movie was done so well that who even remembers the book
Entertainers present are influenced from entertainers past and i dont think the audience has any problem with that, as long as the story is done right and with some heart.
I remember the book, I read it in high school. It would have been a very different movie if they’d kept it faithful.
That’s too bad really and understandble. But planet Hulk would make interesting movie if done right.
I agree with this. Hulk works best in a team when he has other heroes to play off of. That being said, why can’t they pair him off with a more lively, controlled character like She-Hulk for a solo? The Incredible Hulk and She-Hulk animated series was always entertaining and funny because it paired the sassy She-Hulk with the introverted Banner and the raging Hulk.
This would be far cheaper than World War Hulk or Planet Hulk and people are always demanding Marvel to showcase more of their female superheroes on screen.
I see the Hulk as heroes but the writer write him as a mindless creature who is a victim of some evil mastermind. Bruce Banner is forever looking for some cure that won’t work.I can’t wait to see the Hulk movie.

It ain’t really that hard Joss — do the same thing with the Hulk that has been done in the comics. So far, there has never been a live action Hulk that speaks legibly, not in the TV show or the movie. Admittedly, this was one of the strengths of Lou Ferrigno’s portrayal of him, no doubt, but it got old after a few seasons. The character has survived in comics for 50+ years because, as varying times, he either:
a) has a four-year old mentally with the power of a Sherman tank
b) has Banner’s full brain,
c) is a roughhousing, New Yorker type mob guy.
Comic fans won’t pay to read about a character who’s simply a savage, raging engine of destruction, and you can’t expect movie audiences to just watch that with no context. It’s really quite simple.

What works in comics isn’t the same as what would work in movies. Audiences would be completely confused to see a, b and c happening. They’d assume the filmmakers simply can’t make up their mind about the character or the script was just sloppy.
You have to pick a Hulk and stick with it. The Sherman tank is a given, but could we have a smart 4 year old with humor and personality? We got a glimpse of that guy in The Avengers.
Peter David’s run on the Hulk did an extraordinary job of merging the various Hulks seen over the years and wrapping it up into a child abuse bit of psycho-drama that Ang Lee tried (and failed) to pull off in the first film.
I don’t know if audiences would be willing to go through with a more psychological drama version of the Hulk after the Avengers (or that Marvel would go that route since it wouldn’t exactly be kid-friendly) but it would be a different and interesting take for a film to go. Certainly more interesting than Gladiator meets the Hulk. In space.
How could he have NOT read World War Hulk??? It was the biggest thing in comics in 2007!! Even if he didn’t have time to read when it came out, he’s had 6 years to catch up!
There is somewhat of a problem with adaptation though; you might need two movies, since Planet Hulk was about him getting shot into space and then landing on a different planet, and then WWHulk was about him returning to Earth for revenge.
>It was the biggest thing in comics in 2007!
Maybe because everybody hates comics and the people who read them? They makes movies for you because they want your money, but don’t expect anyone to pretend that they like you or the stuff you read.
Yeah Joss Whedon hates comics so much he’s been writing them for ten years, even though he could easily earn ten times as much spending that effort doing script doctoring. Clearly he’s an amoral psychopath just in it for the green.
Superhero movies were so last year. Maybe in a few years Hollywood can reboot The Avengers with whoever is “hot” at the moment?
The Revengers.
Nothing like someone talking like an expert on a character who really doesn’t know all that much about the character.
I love Whedon and while his Avengers film and run on Astonishing X-Men comic were winners he’s no an expert with these things.
This is the same man who couldn’t adapt Wonder Woman. A character that’s around for 70+ years and he couldn’t find a villain to use to he “created” villain. An evil god. Hmmm, hasn’t WW fought Mars, Ares, Eris, Deimos, Phobos, etc?
Hulk HAS been successfully adapted many many many times. In animation and television and I would say the Edward Norton pic was a successful adaptation. Oh and those hundreds and hundreds of comics!!!
Just because Ang Lee screwed it up don’t blame the Hulk.
Talk to Peter David. Talk to Stan Lee. Talk to the countless writers who’ve successfully written him.
Whedon’s statement of “The Hulk is the most difficult Marvel property because it’s always about balance. Is he a monster? Is he a hero?” is him stating why it’s a challenge but it also sums up the movie. He’s not a man, he’s not a monster…he’s straddling the line between both. This man, this monster. Done.
All you need is a Hulk vs. The Leader film and it will be instant gamma box office gold.
Oh – and throw in those rubber humanoid robots things like the ones Steve Ditko drew back in the old days.

THANK YOU!
Hulk vs. The Leader. They set that up already. Just make the movie.
WWH does not showcase Banner, it’s the HULK. You need an arc that showcases Banner and the Hulk. The new series would be perfect for that! Banner is a Scientist for SHIELD, while Hulk is an Operative for SHIELD. SHIELD gives Banner a place for research and Banner gives SHIELD the Hulk
While that could maybe work story-wise, there is no way ABC can afford a CGI Hulk every week, or even every season. Hell, they probably couldn’t even afford Mark Ruffalo to do a walk on (not that he’s going to be available anyways, or even willing).
HULK VERY ANGRY! HULK WANT TO DO ANOTHER HULK MOVIE WHERE HULK IS STAR! HULK GOING TO SMASH WHEDON AND MARVEL! HULK DEMAND THIRD MOVIE! HULK NOT HAPPY BEING PART OF AVENGERS ENSEMBLE! HULK BIG STAR! HULK DESERVE HIS OWN FRANCHISE AND NOT ANOTHER REBOOT! HULK NO LIKE DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD! HULK WANT SITE TO CHANGE NAME TO DEADLINE HULKWOOD!
As a lifelong Incredible Hulk fan, and a guy who would love to see more Hulk in the movies, I actually agree with Whedon here, if indeed they are unwilling to go Smart Hulk-mode.
The character should be used as an event– Avengers movies or Iron Man movies. Otherwise, the concept wears thin. A Hulk stand-alone movie finds itself just going thru the motions, waiting for the next act where it’s okay for Hulk to show up again and smash something.
I love that Joss made a show about a teen girl who killed vampires and understood balance and yet a decades old concept translated to films, tv, animation and comics confounds him.
He needs to think of it as a Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde concept…which is what Stan Lee had in mind when he created it.
When someone says the property is difficult they need to end the sentence with “for me”. Hulk isn’t difficult to translate but Whedon is simply unable to do it.
Oh, Stan Lee created the Hulk?
Where is Jack Kirby in your equation?
They should give the hulk a black man/latino face. Shermal Mooreie comes to mind. You know American Bandstand dude
Whedon may not be an “expert” per se, but he has managed unprecedented success in linking multiple movie properties together. If the Nolan rumor is true, I expect you “experts” will sale up on his ass too. Remember, someone asked them, they are not self-branded.
As for the Wonder Woman crack, other than Batman, most of the DC characters (especially the main ones) are out of touch with the present and difficult to relate to. Many of their powers are difficult to update, let alone those of their nemesis.
