Oz The Great And Powerful star James Franco took to YouTube in support of his Interior. Leather Bar co-director Travis Mathews, whose drama I Want Your Love was banned last month from screening at multiple Australian film festivals by the Australian Classification Board. The unrated pic, about a gay man spending his last night in San Francisco before he moves back home to the Midwest, features a six-minute scene involving unsimulated sex between two actors. “This is such a disappointment to me and seems really silly”, said Franco, who tapped Mathews to collaborate on the Sundance entry Interior. Leather Bar after seeing I Want Your Love. “He was using sex in a very sophisticated way… [and] to keep it from films that want to explore it as human behavior is very shortsighted and I think very hypocritical. I don’t think we’d be having this conversation if he’d made a very violent film”. The film screened stateside at Frameline36, Outfest, and at the Inside Out Toronto LGBT Film Festival. Disney releases Oz The Great And Powerful on March 8. Watch Franco’s video here:

James Franco is easily one of the smartest people in Hollywood. He can quit acting and run a studio, be an A-list producer, be a top agent, but he’s too smart to be an actor. He has more degrees than 99% of this town, plus his raw intelligence is just off the charts.
Maybe off the charts on the low end? Definitely his brilliance didn’t transfer over to hosting the oscars. He might be smart but to me just comes off as a guy who desperately wants to be taken seriously as a writer, sort of like Ethan Hawke.
So because he did a poor job hosting the Oscars everything else about him is written off? Talk about off the charts on the low end…
Agree with Franco, it’s so embarrassing, since we are in 2013 and hope they change their minds. Adults, have a choice to see it or not but it should at least make the cut.
As for Franco Oscar co-hosting, which is apparently just a TV show, in light of Seth MacFarlane hosting (they never thought of that when Franco co-hosted), he wasn’t exactly brilliant, as well as Billy Crystal who also received mixed reviews the year before.
So, I think that idiotic hate on Franco for the Oscars, need to stop. Hey, some people actually enjoyed his performance on the night.
Looking forward to seeing Oz, even more now after watching this video.
The Disney PR machine must be loving this just as OZ is about to open!
While this is far from the first time a cinematic work has been refused film festival exemption in Australia, the Board’s decision comes as something of a surprise, considering they approved Donkey Love for screenings at both Melbourne and Sydney Underground Film Festivals last year.
A documentary about a Columbian folk tradition – in which men participate in sex with donkeys to prepare them for intercourse with women – Donkey Love included several on-screen depictions of bestiality.
The next time I get into trouble I’ll explain “This isn’t what you think it is, I’m actually celebrating Colombian folk culture here”!
“unsimulated sex” Is this the way it’s going? Something we’ve always labeled as porn?
So, “unsimulated sex” means the actors were having sex on screen. Isn’t that the definition of a porno? And making a movie with “unsimulated violence”, isnt’ that a snuff film? Seems like Franco is in wrong movie industry.
Actually a snuff film is when someone is actually killed onscreen. Are you really equating that to pornography?
And “unsimulated violence” is what you see when you watch boxing, MMA or many other sports no one seems to have a problem with.
Very well said. Incredible amounts of blood and gore is fine. Five minutes of sex, which is how we all got here, is a no. Just stupid.
Well, technically speaking, five minutes of the kind of sex in this movie is not how we all got here.
Well, technically speaking, you’re an asshole.
I’m Australian, and Franco is 100% right. And yes, it is embarrassing. (We’re not usually this backwards, I swear!)
Of course, the most disgusting scenes of violence are commonplace in films, but, the moment there is anything to do with sex-everyone freaks out. 2 guys getting it on?Heaven forbid, but, absolutely disgusting acts of violence get right through. What’s wrong with our country?!?!
Why is it always either-or? What if you don’t want to see graphic depictions of sex AND violence? And graphic depictions of sexual violence which are disturbingly on the rise.
So go see another movie.
Is there any point where this guy doesn’t look like he smoked an entire bag of weed prior to speaking? Either that or he just woke up before filming this thing… Thumbs up on the PSA but there couldn’t be a more lethargic big name actor working today.
The Artist is allowed to make what he wants, just like a Fest can show, or not show, what they want. I agree w/ Sonja. If it’s real sex, it’s porn. Artists make a decision to do it for themselves, from the heart, for their vision. That vision shouldn’t be impeded upon but nor should it impede on others. If I had a problem with it, I just wouldn’t watch it. Just like a Fest just wont show it. May The Artist have ultimate freedom in creating it; and the Audience, ultimate freedom in consuming it.
C’mon, what Aussie hasn’t humped a donkey? I’m humping one right now as I type. “Ain’t I, Donny?”
Can we all just take a moment to talk about that T-shirt?
The most overlooked, obvious thing about this clip
I think it is great that James Franco is speaking out about this film being banned in Australia. However, I can’t help thinking about Franco’s hypocrisy here. Everyone knows, James Franco isn’t heterosexual yet he is unwilling to come out of the closet and declare his homosexuality. Wouldn’t it be good for gay rights for James Franco to come out? Come on James, we all know you are gay.
