Jay Leno isn’t letting up. On Tuesday night the The Tonight Show With Jay Leno host took another shot at his NBC overlords: “A 28-year-old woman from Serbia has a rare brain condition where she sees everything upside down”, he said in his monologue. “The good news? She’s now been given a job at the White House as President Obama’s economic adviser. Isn’t that crazy and unbelievable? She sees everything upside down. In fact, she thinks NBC is at the top of the ratings!” The joke comes a day after Leno called NBC’s executives “snakes” (watch it below) and brings him back to the target that sparked his recent feud with NBC’s Bob Greenblatt: NBC’s abysmal ratings.

This is Funnny…!!!
Jay is on fire when it comes to dissing stupid NBC executives!
You have to be kidding. I know humor is subjective but no one with an IQ on the north side of 90 would laugh at these lines.
I think they were kidding.
Hopefully.
Good for Jay he will keep telling jokes at NBC’s expense because he knows they are now effective. Greenblatt is the dumbest moron in the world. Complaining in an email to Jay was the stupidest thing Bob could ever do and Jay smells blood in the water. Bye bye Mr. Green-splatt. Your network career will soon be over. The 5th place ratings are your fault the same way you’d get all the credit for 1st place you have to take all the blame for being in 5th place. That’s how it works Bob. The more you learn the more you know.
I’m calling out this comment as being from a Tonight Show shill. Nobody with half a brain thinks Greenblatt would be fired this soon, no matter the ratings. No network top dog ever has.
Jay is a hack! Hasn’t been funny in years. He’s a bully. NBC should fire him and hire good talent so maybe The Tonight Show can reclaim itself. If that doesn’t work then all good things come to an end. Jay has proven that!
You must not be old enough to remember when NBC was putting out gems like “Supertrain”. Carson was relentless with his criticism. For years, poking fun of NBC was Carson go-to gag.
Leno should be fired immediately.
Because he’s not funny.
Now, what’s all this about a disagreement with the executives.
Yes to this.
Leno knows his time is almost up, and he doesn’t care what he says about NBC at this point. And I’ve come to understand that the feeling is mutual from the new NBC brass. I once read a statement from Comcast CEO Brian Roberts that had he been running the show in January 2010, he would have paid Leno off and let Conan keep hosting the Tonight Show. Now they’ve got to deal with either putting Jimmy Fallon on at 11:30, which really, he’s still somewhat green to the whole thing. Or they’ll have to take a big risk and find someone completely fresh; new blood entirely. Conan at least was well tested for a good sixteen years as a late night host, and they could have avoided that entire mess (which in my opinion, completely tainted the legacy of the Tonight Show).
And say what you want on who you think sucks, or who’s really funny (it’s all a matter of opinion), but Leno has only himself to blame. Had he gone quietly into the night in 2009, like he was supposed to; now he’s going to be making a big stink about NBC firing him yet again. The guy can’t take a hint… The Tonight Show is NOT HIS SHOW. He had no problem forcing Johnny Carson into an early retirement or stealing it from Letterman, then pissing on Conan’s parade. He deserves to get his ass kicked to the curb. And when he does, he sure as hell better not have some big goodbye finale when the time comes. He already had that once. No one feels sorry for you Jay.
I encourage everyone to read Bill Carter’s books ‘The Late Shift’ and ‘The War for Late Night.’ Form your own opinions, but Leno is an absolute assbag of a human being. Why wouldn’t Johnny Carson ever do The Tonight Show after he took over? He certainly had no problem appearing on Letterman and writing the occasional jokes for him. Get the hint Jay, even Carson thought you were a douche-bag. Howard Stern is completely right about him, he’s egomaniacal and has absolutely no morals or consideration for his peers. At least the sharks and backstabbers in Hollywood are honest about what they do. Leno blames everyone else, and acts all Bart Simpson all the time… “I didn’t do it.”
Wow. An intelligent, mostly accurate comment by someone who definitely knows what he’s talking about. On the Internet in this day and age that is refreshing.
I had not heard that the head of Comcast said he would’ve kept Conan O’Brien and paid off Leno. I’m going to Google.
And Jay: Way to go out classy. Only someone who’s hopelessly out of touch would attack NBC again. Yes, Greenblatt maybe/probably should not have emailed you, but to go for the jugular publicly after you likely leaked the emails to the media (sort of the cyber version of hiding in the closet, like you did in ’91)shows you have no concept of your public image whatsoever.
I honestly don’t remember where I saw or heard that comment from Brian Roberts. It may have been Howard Stern ranting and raving about something Leno related… maybe it was just wishful thinking on his part (and mine). I take full responsibility for the statement about Roberts, and I should not have stated it without finding hard evidence to prove it. Please Disregard that portion of my comment.
Please link where Brian Roberts said that. A google search brings up nothing. It is doubtful he said that, or that he meant it the way you are spinning. If he said that, he might’ve meant he would’ve paid off Leno rather than have done a 10 pm show. To say you’re getting rid of a ratings winner, and the only successful show on the network, would be fiscal negligence.
You are obviously one of those obsessives fixated on this 20+ year old story about these pampered multi-millionaires. Those few but loud voices on the internet that don’t translate to ratings for “your guy.” Everyone knows about the book, blah blah, that has nothing to do with what’s going on now.
And Carson was miffed because he owned Letterman’s show and he wanted Letterman to succeed him. NBC disregarding him was an ego blow and a sign of his diminished power.
I absolutely DESPISE Howard Stern, cannot watch or listen to the man for even 30 seconds. But when it comes to Leno, Stern is spot on.
This is the most accurate comment that could be possibly written about this situation.
Both Jay and Dave are afraid to have guest hosts the way Johnny did for the same exact reason. Carson gave Dave and Jay the chance to guest host The Tonight Show because Carson was confident in his own ability and wasn’t afraid to let others host the show. That’s the real tragedy an entire generation of rising comedians were denied the chance to be seen in late night due to Dave and Jay both being insecure about giving younger guys the chance to shine the way they were given the chance by Carson. Jay never has comedians on ever. Dave is more open to this but both of them need to be shoved off the stage they’ve both had their shows for 20 years and it’s time to get rid of both of them they are no longer funny they just go through the motions to keep getting paid.
Dave had MANY guest hosts during the six week period when he was recovering from open heart surgery 10 years ago.
Terrific, Ed. Well stated.
Really did nod and ‘mmhmm’ all the way through your comment, Ed. Loved it.
Wow, I love people who spout misinformation–checking up on their facts, just makes them look sad and stupid. Where did you read that comment from Comcast’s CEO, Ed? Hmmm? I can’t hear you Ed. Yeah, right. Considering how far down NBC has fallen in the rabbit hole, I think the NBC brass has way more problems then a couple of jokes. But you go ahead Ed, and continue to make up crap–printing up your remarks will make excellent toilet paper. Idiot…
AJ, you either work for Jay or you have some other vested interest in this matter. Read all the other comments praising Ed’s comment. It’s one of the most outstanding comments I’ve ever ready anywhere on the Internet, and should go down in Deadline.com history.
I don’t have any vested interest other than truth, and I agree with AJ. Don’t spout fake stuff like fact. And the number of comments agreeing with Ed’s made up facts doesn’t make it valid. LOL. And why are those who disagree with you shills, maybe YOU’RE the shills.
I agree, and for the record I don’t have any vested interest either. I couldn’t find any mention of that conversation Ed was referring to. Someone is blowing smoke–if it’s not true then it’s made up. Find me that article or statement he claims was made and I’ll retract my opinion–in other words, PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR LARGE MOUTH IS! I’ve seen many outstanding comments on the internet, this really wasn’t even close to “outstanding”.
Like the bulk of people making millions of dollars, Leno considers the President’s pursuit of fair-share taxes from the rich to be an “upside-down” policy. I guess Jay would be happier with poor people covering the tax burden for his disgustingly rich ass.
Too bad it didn’t occur to you that in order to really be effective, you need to cut a budget and live in your means. You don’t just mug people because it is convenient and you don’t know how to manage a dollar. Well, that even ignores the sheer idiocy of most of the economic policies of the last 4.5 years. Obama seems intent on proving himself better than Bush, including being more of an incompetent manager. He’s succeeding beyond his wildest dreams.
Stick with Maddow and Letterman. You can’t handle reality. And no, it is not as funny as the baseless made up glad-handing, but it does prepare you better for the next day.
I especially liked the “disgustingly rich” descriptor “jojo” used to describe Leno. That speaks volumes about his/her frame of mind.
Jay’s just pandering to his demo. There was a survey released a while back of people’s favorite shows by political affiliation and in terms of late night guests, conservatives loved Leno. So I suspect Leno’s just solidifying his audience.
Plus, after his alienation of Conan. Leno’s a bit of a pariah among many in hollywood and I think he damaged his reputation there beyond repair. So he’s just taking love the only place he can get it.
Hey JoJo: Carson had a joke that he recycled every few years regarding “only one fruitcake” in the world and how the one fruitcake would be passed around by person to person. When a late night host tells a joke on a subject, the joke isn’t necessarily based on a belief. Imagine Carson thinking that there is only one fruit cake in the world.
I am sure some Deadline readers will remember Carson’s fruitcake joke.
They should get a bunch of younger folks to helm the late night shows
Ratings would say otherwise. No one has ever been told to exit for having a number one show. He even took a pay cut. If anything, Conan proved that he does not have it, otherwise people would be flocking to his tbs show. In the end this is nbc’s fault, had they kept Leno in the beginning, he would still have a bigger lead. He’s still number one on a fourth place network
Johnny Carson was forced to exit a no. 1 show by Jay and his manager Helen and then NBC President Warren Littlefield.
You are so righ!!!
Say what you want about Leno in ’92, but Leno in ’04 should never have agreed to that shitty succession plan. He clearly wasn’t ready to go.
At the same time, Conan/Leno/Carson/Leno is ALL NBC’s doing It’s always NBC’s doing. They’re the fuckin’ network. They should have shut that Conan shit down in 2004. If he wanted to go, they should have let him go.
Fast forward to 2009. NBC always wants their cake and eat it too. Pick one. Jay or Conan and stick with it. That’s not why they do. NBC is not long-term, stay-the-course and that’s why they’re in the shape they’re in now. Jay should never have agreed to “The Jay Leno Show”. Here, I agree he should have taken his car-happy tail home. But NBC kept him on board because they didn’t really want Conan to do “The Tonight Show” otherwise they would have better supported him. So when NBC orchestrated that failure, they could get rid of Conan and still have Jay.
But they actually want to get rid of Jay. If I were Jay, I would have bounced a long time ago. I don’t work where I’m not wanted. Fuck that shit.
But don’t get it twisted. This is ALL NBC.
How is this any different than his typical routine? He has used similar lines making fun of NBC for a decade now.
Too true – I’m just waiting for him to use that old chestnut, “You know what NBC stands for? Never believe your contract,” Which he used in the fall of 92′, the fall of 2009 and….yeah, should be any night now…
Say whatever you want about Leno… the fact remains that The Tonight Show is still winning ratings vs. all late nights chatters across key demos.
Of course he’s not funny every night; but he still makes people laugh and that idiot Greenblatt just gave Leno a big boost up. But this fight could end up with one of them out of NBC and the logic is to fire Greenblatt who only managed to get high ratings on ‘The Voice’ which is not his project anyway.
The smartest thing Greenblatt could do is lock in Brian Williams as Jay’s successor. Brian kills it every time he appears on a talk show (esp. Letterman), and has a sharp, dry wit reminiscent of Carson, while appealing to a broader (younger) demo. He’d be tremendous.
John, you’re the only person I’ve ever seen who’s thought this about Williams, too. He’d be an awesome Tonight Show host.
LOL. Leno is way funnier than Letterman, Jon Stewart and Colbert combined.
On what planet? Bwahahahaha!!!
Planet Kolob.
Stopped watching when Cohan was on. Came back after jay came back. I’m middle of the country regular folk. This is all silly and jay has lot more action gg on than the tonight show. Secretly I’ll bet he is estatic about not having to show up for filming of these shows. He’s got a lot more going on and secretly is not at all torn up about this. Go Leno and enjoy the rest of your life. I really love you BECAUSE you are still married to your wife and have been fir years. Have a wonderful life.
Jay continues to be #1 in the ratings every single night, people.
He also quietly hosts countless numbers of charity events every year. He is faithful to his long-time wife, whom he adores.
He is a kind, sweet, wonderful, hardworking man who has brought hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising to NBC.
Bob greenblatt is an idiot with no sense of humor.
Thank you for that statement, publicist of Jay Leno.
Every single night? In your dreams, you lover of hacky prehistoric jokes. Check last night’s ratings. See my post above. You are in for an unpleasant shock if you really believe what you typed.
Faithful? Who cares? Not our business.
To be clear, NBC executives are as idiotic as Leno if they can’t understand that a late night host’s job is to make fun of them mercilessly. Greenblatt should be able to shrug off Leno’s weak, pathetic gumming since it doesn’t have any teeth anyway. Instead Greenblatt acts like a petulant child.
I’d bet every dollar I’m worth, about $83,750, that you work for Jay Leno. Three things in life that I know are so: death, taxes and “Ruth Gilbert” is a Tonight Show employee.
Just a cheap ratings ploy to divert attention from Kimmel.
THE most ungrateful man in the business.
It seems like Jay figures he’s on the way out and wants to go after the bigwigs while he can. He should certainly be allowed to say what he wants, but he does run the risk of seeming petty and vindictive. It’s sad, but all too common, that when someone makes a gazillion dollars and has a career and life most people can’t even dream about that they turn into bitter, egomaniacal people.
NBC lacks direction and leadership. They don’t know what viewers want or where they fit in. Greenblatt lashing out at Leno, was so laughable to the general public. NBC airs “The Biggest Loser”, yet during commercials advertisers promote GMO Round Up Ready Corn & Soy, and Aspartame products (Pepsi, Coke, Frito Lay, Taco Bell ect.) which are linked to Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain, chronic illness and cancer, during “TBL”. That clearly indicates NBC/Comcast both think viewers don’t have a brain and that profits are more important than viewers quality of life.
Jay Leno has driven millions of viewers away from NBC. Now that’s a legacy.
1. Leno is still at the top of the heap.
2. Fallen will make an excellent replacement.
3. NBC ratings are horrible.
Jay’s interviews are the highlight of his show. Let’s face it: he’s good with guests, but he’s never been a funny comedian. Would I prefer that Conan still had TONIGHT? Sure, but we’re long past that. If NBC’s smart, and i’ve heard this is actually being considered, they’ll simply slide ‘LATE NIGHT’ to 11:35 and just give him a larger NYC studio. I’ve heard a lot of talk that NBC’s probably giving 12:35 back to the affiliates when and if this happens so, why not? Even if they call it “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon,” don’t change the show! They changed Conan’s, moved him and his staff half way around the country, and look what happened! Jimmy should be given plenty of time to build an audience at 11:35. Jay would probably do very well hosting a show a la Larry King on CNN, and you know what? I’d probably enjoy it! I’m sure Jeff Zucker would hire him to replace Piers Morgan in a heartbeat. Now while I love Craig Ferguson, Moonves would be insanely wise to steal Stewart/Colbert for CBS. Keep Dave till their contracts at Comedy Central are up, and then bring them over.
Yawn. Jay Leno acting childish, nothing new here.
It’s true that Leno isn’t very funny, nor was he ever, however that doesn’t mean that Letterman is funny anymore. At least Leno is trying, Letterman is truly abysmal and has been for at least 10 years or so.
Conan is good but he was a poor host of the Tonight Show; he tried to change himself to appeal more to Leno’s “middle America” viewers and thus wasn’t very funny.
The “Tonight Show” in and of itself doesn’t mean anything. It was a big deal in the past because Carson was a comedic legend who basically invented the format. Any show that Carson did would have been just as popular/important.
Look, I never watch Leno or Letterman anymore, but its clear they are becoming more and more irrelevant in this day and age of viral YouTube videos. Kimmel and Fallon know the game. Sometimes it’s hard to know when to exit the stage.
This really isn’t new. Talk show hosts from Carson to Letterman to Leno to Ferguson and others have been biting the hand that feeds them for years. It feeds their need to be viewed as irreverent, snarky, edgy, and “hipper” than the suits they work for. Letterman has been poking at Les Monvess for years and NBC before that. Carson routinely skewered NBC. Even Craig Ferguson slaps CBS on a regular basis.
Leno smells chum in the water and is on the attack, but he won’t be around forever. When his contract expires, he will most likely not be picked up by NBC , probably being replaced by Jimmy Fallon. Leno can then go try to bump Conan off TBS.
