In a major casting coup for NBC, the network has landed Oscar-nominated John Malkovich to topline new action-adventure series Crossbones, from Luther creator Neil Cross and feature producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald and Georgeville TV. He will play the notorious English pirate Blackbeard, a role Brit Hugh Laurie flirted with for a while but ultimately did not commit to. The 10-episode Crossbones is set in 1715 on the Bahamian island of New Providence, the first functioning democracy in the Americas, where the diabolical pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard (Malkovich), reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors. Part shantytown, part marauder’s paradise, this is a place like no other on Earth — and a mounting threat to international commerce. The series, originally picked up for this midseason, has not been slotted and will likely launch next season.
Cross wrote the script and is executive producing with Parkes, MacDonald and Ted Gold for Parkes/MacDonald Prods; Georgeville Television, Reliance Entertainment/Motion Picture Capital’s new TV Studio; and Universal Television. “Over the last three decades, John Malkovich has occupied a singular place in the world of international film, theater, and even opera,” Parkes said. “We’re awed by the opportunity to bring his brilliance to the small screen — particularly in service of the character of Blackbeard, as so brilliantly conceived by Neil Cross.” Chris Philip’s Sierra/Engine TV handles international distribution.

There has never been a “functioning democracy” in the Americas.
amen to that!
What? They go from talking with Hugh Laurie (excellent fit) to Malkovich? He better step up his game, because his often droll, dry delivery won’t make it as Blackbeard. Should have waved a little more cash under Laurie’s nose.
Blackbear was in charge? Then it wasn’t a “democracy”, was it?
Ian McShane wasn’t available?
While I’m sorry to hear Hugh Laurie won’t be Blackbeard I think John Malkovich will be equally apable of pulling it off. To my knowledge this is his 1st TV series & to get an actor of his caliber means NBC won’t be dumping this anywhere on the schedule & could serve as a midseason break for Revolution in early 2014.
Does this mean there will not be a sequel to ROUNDERS? I had heard they were thinking about making one. It just wouldn’t be the same without John. Oh well, this is quite the coup for NBC. He is one of my favorite actors.
I think the world will keep turning without a “Rounders 2.”
But yay on this casting news! Will probably watch?!
You are out of your mind.
John Malkovich is a genius. He plays dry, unapologetically mean, smart and dirty to perfection. I wonder if he would direct some episodes too…he directed a production of ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ in Paris last year: it was brilliantly done–kept the original essence and wits but brought it to the 21st century. The cast had ipads on set…but everything was period. The delivery was very modern and fun. Can’t wait to see how he brings Blackbeard to life!
Love the casting but Malkovich is really slumming it on NBC.
Their dramas just don’t stack up.
Sure, he’ll be collecting a fat check but he’ll also be reciting very thin dialogue.
I look forward to his next series after this one shipwrecks.
How disappointed! I hope hugh laurie take the role!
Yikes! Abandon ship!!!
Great.
John is a wayyyyyyy better choice than Hugh, although I love him as well. I’m super excited. I agree, it’s great for NBC as well.
Malkovich is great, but Laurie would be better. I’m disappointed((
Of all shows for Malkovich to star in. Didn’t NBC have that Robinson Crusoe show that tanked? Now they’re going back to that same well. Just like them doing three “Jekyll & Hyde”/two-men-one-body takes in a row thinking nobody would notice (“Awake,” “My Own Worst Enemy,” “Do No Harm.”).
Love John, though. Stack that paper. Houses in France don’t pay for themselves.
John Malkovich >>>>>>>>>> Hugh Laurie. Laurie´s bitter fangirls to the left.
