UPDATE: After I broke the news, Jon Stewart told the media his feelings about going from television to movies. ”I am a television person who is accustomed to having a thought at 10 AM and having it out there at 6:30 PM and moving on, so this is a little scary, yes.” He added: ”One of the reasons we are in this business is to challenge ourselves.”
11 AM EXCLUSIVE: Jon Stewart will take a 12-week summer hiatus from hosting Comedy Central‘s The Daily Show to make his feature directing debut. In his absence, Daily Show regular John Oliver will be guest host for eight weeks of fresh shows. Stewart has written the script for and will direct Rosewater, an adaptation of the book Then They Came For Me: A Family’s Story Of Love, Captivity And Survival. Published in 2011 by Random House, the book is Maziar Bahari’s harrowing ordeal of leaving London in June 2009 to cover Iran’s presidential elections. With a pregnant fiance left behind, the BBC journalist expected to be away for a week. Instead, he spent the next 118 days in Iran’s most notorious prison being brutally interrogated by a man he knew only by one thing: he smelled of Rosewater. Bahari wrote the book with Aimee Molloy. Scott Rudin will produce with Stewart and Gigi Pritzker. Pritzker’s OddLot Entertainment is financing the film.
While Stewart is known for his humor, taking on a geopolitical hot button issue film like this is in keeping with how he has made his show an important part of the conversation on political matters. He quietly optioned the book through his Busboy Productions banner, and had a personal stake in the story: After Bahari was accused of spying, one of the items used against him was an appearance he made on The Daily Show. I can’t remember when a well established daily talk show host has taken a hiatus like this to pursue a passion project.
Stewart has acted in numerous films over the years, and hosted the Oscars in 2008; Rosewater marks his first time writing and directing a feature.
Rich Klubeck of UTA sold the entire package to OddLot. ICM’s Ron Bernstein sold the book to Stewart quietly a year ago. James Dixon manages Stewart.

John Stewart is a legend of course. But it will be great to see how he does in his directorial debut. I am a big fan, so I know he will do very well.
Such a big fan you can’t spell his name right.
perhaps it’s “Jon” that spells his name wrong…?
Standard shortened spelling for Jonathans.
A legend in his own mind.
Who does he think he is, Ben Affleck?
Jon is a true genius. Hope this is the first of many Stewart-helmed films.
What about TV hosting skills would indicate he’s a good director? That you agree with his politics???
What, as a functioning moron, makes you think you should be posting on the internet?
This is probably a misstep, but I love Jon, so it’s good to see him go for it!
Good for Jonny! He should change the title to ‘Argo 2: Jewish Boogaloo’
This should go down in the comment hall of fame. You, sir/ma’am, are hilarious.
LMAO…. oh I needed that laugh today…
of course Jon would get the Canadian part right… unlike afflec
You don’t get Scott Rudin producing without good material, so I’m already betting Mr. Stewart wrote an excellent script. I bet he’ll do his usual meticulous job with the directing side and make a good film.
This is a great opportunity for John Oliver. I imagine if this goes well for him it could lead to him getting his own show. They might not want to put another half hour on after Colbert, but maybe they’ll do something like give him the 11-midnight slot on Fridays.
It’s like this is his trial run on whether or not he’ll be able to take over Daily Show whenever Stewart retires, whenever that may be. But yes, if he did do well then it’d open a plethora of Viacom related hosting opportunities.
If he gets a regular show out of this, I can forgive him for turning down a regular role on Community.
In retrospect, turning down a regular role on Community just showed how smart he is!
That’s an interesting idea. Not standup, but something tailored to fit Oliver.
Argo 2: Jewish Boogaloo
Funniest thing I’ve read in a long, long time.
Risky move for Stewart, but I know he can pull it off.
Got nothing better to do, eh?
Good for Jon! We hope there are more film and television projects coming.
I talked to Stewart about this last week at the store. The way he explains it to me it’s going to be very good.
Hmmm. I’ll be on the lookout for this.
Looks like I’ll have a half hour more per day this summer to burn. Sorry, Oliver, but you’re no Stewart.
Keep in mind, while Stewart delivers the lines superbly, the whole writing team, sans Jon, will still be cranking out murderously funny jibes, this time for a Brit.
No, Oliver is actually still funny.
This is actually good news. Stewart seems to have become too emotionally involved with politics to deliver the cutting humor he used to. He recently scolded the former White House press secretary for lying/hiding the truth and completely avoided the fact that everybody else in the White House has equal or more blame. I have been recently skipping Daily Show and going straight to Colbert. I love John Oliver & trust that he will save the show (for me, anyway).
Oliver is significantly funnier than Stewart, so it looks like I’ll have to start DVRing The Daily Show again once he subs in. I’ve been just watching Colbert for a few years now.
I think you must have a different sense of humor than me and my friends. When we watch daily we laugh out loud at least 5 or 6 times. When we watch Colbert it’s mostly silent with a couple of chuckles. So I disagree with you. I also could do without the “reporters” most of the time – they seem like fillers for a shortage of stories to comment on to me.
Does anyone know a link or season / Episode of the episode mentioned in the article? The one where Bahari is accused of spying and his appearance on The Daily Show is used against him?

I hope while Daddy is away, the kiddies will play. I see this as a chance to get a lot of fun out of our Senior Correspondents. ,)
I’m happy for Jon. And while I do like John Oliver quite a bit, I don’tknow how I’m going to survive a 12 week Stewart withdrawl…
So Jon is my prosaic(the drug sp?) too.I love Oliver and it doesn’t
matter to me how acclaimed this project is.I will see it.It means a great deal to me how deeply concerned Stewart was that a mention of his show in this reporter’s trial had an influence. It shows me that no matter how much people try to tag him with being irresponsible about his influence, he takes the actions that speak far louder than the echo chamber.KUDOS Jon and KUDOS Oliver!
TV comedian directs his first feature and chooses a harrowing political prisoner of war drama? Umm, I love ya Jonny, but you’ve got a tough road ahead of you. Or it’ll just never happen. It will be put on hiatus due to scheduling or casting issues and we shall never hear of it again.
I think Stewart is going for the PEGOT.
He’s already got the Peabody, Emmy, and Grammy, this will get him an Oscar.
How’s he going to get a Tony?
Maybe he develops a play with Phillip Michael Thomas… I heard he wants one of these too.
Produce a play based on this movie, duh
So the Oscar would be sweet revenge, for the treatment he got while hosting, but the TONY should be as frightening to him as it is to me.
Jay Leno needs to follow Jon’s example now that Jay is leaving The Tonight Show and perhaps write and direct something with more gravitas than his show. Say, “Dude, Where’s My Car II”.
With jokes like that, I’m puzzled why you haven’t been given your won late night talk show.
Commenter “SAS,” Thanks For The Laugh.
If there’s ONE thing Jay Leno WOULD know, it’s WHERE THE CARS ARE.
Oliver makes good impressions of an American journalist covering news events in foreign countries. But as a host, he could be a flop!
the break is well deserved. Instead of eight weeks with John Oliver, how about the following:
* four weeks with Oliver
* two weeks with Aasif Mandhvi
* one week with Larry Wilmour
* One week with Sam Bee
How about zero weeks with Brits and all weeks with American performers? Tired of seeing Brits on my tv when so many talented Americans need and deserve jobs.
Seriously?
Uh, Sam Bee and Jason Jones are Canadian. Don’t be a nationalist snob.
I guarantee Fox News is thrilled about this!
Cool, since I won’t notice he’s gone as I can’t stand his hypocritical smugness. His tax shelters make Mitt Romney look like he has the financial brains of Barack Obama.
Haha! His temporary disappearance from TV to you is like your permanent disappearance from Earth to everybody!
I don’t know if he’ll make a good director, but it’s cool to see him try something new.
