Comedy writer-producers Josh Bycel and Jonathan Fener have closed an overall deal at Universal Television. Under the two-year pact, the duo is joining the studio’s NBC comedy pilot Assistance as executive producers. They also will develop new projects. “We’ve been longtime fans of Bycel and Fener and are happy to have them as part of the Universal TV family,” said Universal TV EVP Bela Bajaria,. “They are both strong showrunners and developers, individually, as well as a team.” UTA-repped Bycel and Fener most recently worked on ABC’s Happy Endings, Bycel as executive producer and Fener as co-executive producers. The two also worked together as co-executive producers on Fox’s American Dad. Additionally, Bycel served as a showrunner on Scrubs and co-executive producer on Psych. Written by Leslye Headland based on her play, Assistance, co-produced by Gary Sanchez Prods., stars Krysten Ritter as Nora, an idealistic “working girl” assistant who is pulled between her colleague Seth (Zach Cregger) and her real-life fiance (Peter Cambor) while trying to manage a demanding boss.

Two more white male writers getting overall deals. Has there ever been two diversity writers getting overall deals like this? DOUBT IT.
Good writers (in the eyes of the network) get deals. Stop being a dummy and assuming their skin color has anything to do with it.
To the Anonymous – Diversity writers rarely get to be “in the eyes of the network” so how do Diversity writers “get deals” if networks don’t even know (or care) they exist.
Stop being a fluffer for the discriminators in the Industry, Anonymous. You may not see it because you’ve got your head buried in the white sand, but DISCRIMINATION EXISTS.
Actually THERE HAS
And their names are….?
Just the other day I was sitting at Nate and Al’s enjoying a pastrami (lean) and coffee (black, one sweet ‘n low) and I was wondering where this duo would wind up. Congrats to NBC!
They’re still around?!? Ha. Congrats to old friends!
these two PRO’s prove they’re winners, credit after credit after credit…cudos all the way ’round
These guys are amazing. Wonderful storytellers (that’s what I call TV writing)
Josh Bycel gave me my first job in Hollywood. Sure I was a terrible nanny but now I am 1/3 of a writing team.
Jon Fener is so handsome I could plotz.
Congrats to my two best fiends! Ha. Of course I mean “friends”
Worked with these two in ’97 when their first episode of tv got a 27 in the demo!
If you know me you know that I HATE BS! If you look fat in that skirt I am gonna tell you, “hey, you look fat in that skirt.” Well, ladies and germs, Bycel and Fener DO NOT look fat in that skirt!
Just sat down to sip on a warm Dr. Brown’s (celery soda) and thought that I would congratulate these two old timers again! What a get! And I don’t mean a divorce! HELLO!
These guys have developed 87 times and never even had a pilot made. What makes them merit an overall deal?
They are mediocre comedy writers who got so cold that they had to take a job in hour-long. Don’t tell me they wanted to branch out into hour. They. Were. Unwanted. In Comedy. And had to work in hour because comedy producers no longer would hire them.
This is just more UTA shenanigans as usual. When are these studio heads going to look around and see all their bad shows stem from that agency? Apparently, Bela wants more shows like the 2-and-out “Do No Harm” which also is from a UTA writer.
There are better working writers who deserve this money more. Apparently, Universal wants to continue its streak of failure with shows like like “Animal Practice” and “Guys With Kids.”
NBC deserves to go out of business when they spend money like this.
::::starting slow clap::::::::
One thing I can say about Bycel & Fener is – when you think they’re gonna zig, they’ll zig! Hope they’re helming The Peacock’s Entourage reboot! (Line pitch: “Hug it out, bitches!!” )
Also, Jason Berger looks fat in a skirt. Talking visible moose knuckle.
Guys. Goats yelling like humans has a million you tube hits. We are working too hard.
Regarding, Jon Fener is so handsome, I could plotz! Yes!!! He belongs in front of the camera, not behind it.
