After very lengthy negotiations, Karl Urban has closed a deal to star opposite Michael Ealy in Fox‘s untitled J.H. Wyman/J.J. Abrams drama pilot (formerly Inhuman). The project reunites Urban, who plays Bones in the Star Trek movie franchise, with the franchise’s helmer Abrams. The action-packed buddy cop show, from Warner Bros TV and Bad Robot, is set in the near future when all LAPD officers are partnered with highly evolved human-like androids. It centers on one such pairing, cop John Kennex (Urban) and his android partner Dorian (Ealy). Kennex is described as a respected police officer who has shut down emotionally after a tragic mission left him critically injured. The cast of the pilot also includes Lili Taylor and Minka Kelly. This marks the first series regular role for Urban, who recently played the title character in another futuristic cop project, feature Dredd 3D.

I like Karl Urban, this is great casting.
I absolutely agree. He’s great for this role. This pilot has some of the best casting I’ve seen thus far.
Urban is too god for TV. He’s a movie star. don’t do it, Karl.
BTW Dredd was the best action film of last year.
HAHAHAHHHAHAHAHA yeah right
Hahahaha yeah right, it was actually the best film of the year overall. What sh*t where you watching?
Best pilot I’ve read this year. Perfect casting. Please execute this well, Fox!
Outstanding cast here. All actors are great and now let see the chemisry. And i hear in some deadline comments that script is great too(not sure where they know that) May be this will be at least on Person of interest level if not better. POI is best scripted and acted drama on broadcast TV. But do it like POI
with procedural structure.
By the way deadline the title is “HUMAN”. Look at the hollywood reporter.
PoI PoI
J.J. J.J.
Actually at least some aspects of Grimm is totally like Person of Interest:
1) Procedural with a twist (but not supernatural)
2) Despite procedural bones strong multi-epsode, season arcs
3) Deep mythology
4) Capable cast and guest-stars.
And if you think deeply you may argue that Blue Blood based on same mechanic.
For high-quality procedurals it’s a way to go, definitely. As much as i admire NCIS, old procedural formula can’t exist any longer without next step in evolution – procedural drama with a twist.
It’s Holmes and Yo-Yo. But edgier!
As Biz Markie would say, “Oh, Snap!”. Karl Urban AND Michael Ealy? I’m there (assuming it makes it to series).
Fox should have just renewed Fringe instead of ripping off all those Kenneth Johnson shows like 6 MD Man, Bionic Woman & Alien Nation.
How in gods name would something rip off both 6MD Man and Alien Nation at the same time?! Just because they are both SciFi shows doesnt actually make them the same, Thats like saying a new medical drama would somehow rip off both House and ER at the same time. They are completely different shows.
A cop and his robot partner? Get Harlan Ellison’s lawyer on the phone; Hollywood’s so desperate they’re now doing sequels to LAWSUITS.
Karl Urban is great. Charismatic, handsome, funny, and basically everything you could want in a leading man. The problem is that every time his career got a boost of forward momentum, his agent, or whoever, steered him into some b-grade shlock movie, which killed all momentum. Then he would basically have to start building that career momentum all over again. This happened repeatedly. It was incredibly frustrating.
This is aside from the Dredd situation, where critics tore apart that movie before it was even finished filming. Then they saw the movie and actually liked it!!! Thanks for helping it bomb, critics! You wouldn’t want to actually see the film before killing it, would you? Nope! What fun is that?! Best to destroy the careers of numerous people and then regret it later! Entertainment journalism at its finest.
Karl Urban is the human? Really? I think he’d make a great android, especially with his deep voice.
This suddenly became watchable.
This dude is major.
Though I don’t think this is the right direction for Urban’s career. He should stick to features. He has that kind of presence, “Judge Dredd” notwithstanding.
Yep, Karl’s a formidable actor. I definitely enjoy his performances in general.
HELL YEA
Wow, what a coup for Fox! Joel is doing this shit right!
@Fred. Too good for TV is a hilarious remark considering all of the best story telling in entertainment is on ‘TV’. There’s a lot more money in tv too.
An emotionally shutdown cop in the future. Why not go with a Judge Dredd TV show then? Oh, I see, they wanted him to have an andriod partner. Personally, I’d rather see the makes of Dredd make a TV version of that show and sell it to one of the cable companies.
I’ve followed Karl Urban ever since he played Julies Cesar on Hercules and xena. He can do it all
Isn’t this a remake of Mann and Machine, but with a ‘male’ robot instead of the incredibly hot Yancy Butler?
Anything with Karl I’ll watch. Just hope FOX doesn’t kill like let’s see: Firefly, Fringe, Dollhouse. Hope they give it a go and not kill before to soon.
It’s sounds like an Alien Nation with a cop and android. Or like Total Recall TV show.
Fox didn’t kill Fringe. They probably shouldn’t have made it a Thursday night doorstop, but Fox at least put the show to bed properly. Sick of seeing the anti-Fox rants. Firefly was over 10 years ago… get over it folks.
I do hope that this does not mess up his movie career.but I am interested in seeing how this show does.
OH???
OMG! sounds alot like I Robot to me anyone else?
It sounds nothing like I, Robot
Not particularly; you mean the movie where Will Smith battles the machinations of a twisted AI hellbent on tough-loving mankind, while advertising Converse footwear?
It did make me think of the Friends pilot Joey had, where he plays a detective with a robotic partner though…
Why not just make Caves of Steel and its sequels.
I like Karl Urban so I might give this show a try. Looks like it’s just going to be a TV show remake of the recent “I, Robot” movie where you had the emotionally troubled human cop (Will Smith) paired up with a robot (Sonny) as a partner. Hopefully this show will come up with some plot elements that are actually new and original.
Urban didnt play Bones in STAR TREK, That was DeForest Kelly. Urban played Bones in J.J. ABRAHMS STAR TREK. There is a huge difference there.
