EXCLUSIVE: Actress-comedian Kristen Schaal is set as a lead opposite June Diane Raphael and Jenny Slate in ABC’s single-camera comedy pilot Pulling, from ABC Studios and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. The project, written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky based on the British series and directed by Jason Moore, revolves around three dysfunctional women in their 30s — Donna (Raphael), Karen (Slate) and Louise (Schaal) — living their lives the way they want, even if society tells them they should have it all figured out by this point. Schaal replaces Mandy Moore, who was originally cast as Louise but recently exited the project. Interestingly, all three leads in the pilot are actresses/comedians/writers, matching the background of Sharon Horgan, co-creator/star of the original series (she played Donna) and an executive producer of the ABC version. (Horgan wrote and stars in another ABC comedy pilot, Bad Management.) Schaal, repped by UTA and Avalon, serves as Senior Women’s Correspondent for The Daily Show. She was a series regular on HBO’s Flight Of The Conchords, recurred on 30 Rock, voices a character on Fox’s Bob’s Burgers (also named Louise), and exec produces Amazon’s animated comedy pilot Supernatural.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

Okay, now it’s obvious why Mandy Moore didn’t work. They were just looking for a ‘different’ kind of actress.
Thank God they got someone genuinely funny
oh awesome! if she’s playing Louise, that’s also the name of her character on Bob’s Burgers.
This is the best example of ‘They went another way” except its usually the other way around
Yes, yes, and more YES! With this, Bob’s Burgers and Gravity Falls in full swing, and EPing the Supanatural pilot over at Amazon, 2013 is really shaping up to be the year of the Schaal.
Kristen’s the best.
Quality choice. Once in a blue Hollywood flirts with meritocracy…
Great job Schaal!!! this is a great cast and a great script.
They’re all really talented but come on ABC, 3 white leads, not one of color. ABC has the least diverse casting this pilot season (virtually none) and I don’t understand why they aren’t making this a priority.
You’re like broken record.
How is is this a priority?
Racial minorities are called minorities for a reason: there aren’t many of them!
And when they are cast, you accuse networks and producers of tokenism.
Brilliant casting in all respects! Bravo!
What an amazing addition to an already great cast! Can’t wait to watch!
Love love love Kristen. Did not not not love this script.
You’re totally “right”. They just have John Leguizamo and Omar Epps in lead roles (and had Jenni Rivera before her passing). And the other networks have…hmmm….hmmm…well they certainly have diversity in pilot season. I wouldn’t throw rocks at the only broadcast network with an AfricanAmerican lead on television.
Finally — an interesting actor is being cast in a series. Kristen Schaal usually keeps things off-beat and she sounds like a great fit for this series. I look forward to watching anything she’s in.
Apparently, I’m the only one who hates the sight of her. She ruined 30Rock for me.
On the bright side – more time for quality shows that aren’t about “dysfunctional women in their 30s”.
You are NOT the only one. I think she’s dreadful. She ruined 30 Rock for me too. She’s lucky she’s “quirky” because she’s not talented.
