In his call to investors today CBS head Les Moonves referred to the upcoming eighth season of Showtime’s Dexter as its “last season”, supporting speculation that the series is approaching its end. Showtime President David Nevins hinted at an “end-game” during January’s TCAs, and in a Q&A session at Deutsche Bank’s 2013 dbAccess Media, Internet & Telecom Conference today moderator Douglas Mitchelson asked Moonves about the network’s plans post-Dexter. “Ray Donovan is coming on with Liev Schreiber which comes on with Dexter‘s last season starting in June”, said Moonves. “And then we have Masters of Sex, a story of Masters and Johnson, which is a very exciting show. A show that you wouldn’t see on CBS but it works on Showtime. And that comes behind Homeland in September. And just announced, we’re doing a series about the Vatican, which I think is rather timely, which Ridley Scott is directing for us. So we’re very excited about that”. Dexter returns for its eighth season on June 30, 2013.

You lost me at five.
Dexter has been sucking tremendously the last few seasons. These writers on it just don’t get this character, the insanely stupid things they’ve had Dexter doing, he would have done none of in earlier seasons.
With that being said, I am looking forward to seeing how they plan on ending it. Will Dexter get caught and go to jail; maybe even get the death penalty? Or will it end like ‘The Sopranos’, with a giant F-you to the audience?
“Dexter” had a very strong seventh season. Let it go out equally strong in its eighth. Don’t drag it out another season or more like “How I Met Your Mother”.
Let shows go.
Thank God.
Hopefully it’s a good one, none have been at the quality of season 4 and its a real shame for a show to be so great and then dip to average. I should be gripped week to week and not think I’ll just wait for it to finish so I can watch it all in one go.
Stupid move. I Would love to see this move to a competing network for the 9th season. this show still has strong legs.
Yes, last season was a bit of a bump up. But there’s really nowhere to go with the character. And the challenge of keeping all the supporting characters alive and involved has largely failed. Enough is enough. John Lithgow gave them their best season and it’s been very uneven to poor since.
Dexter “approached it’s end” in season 4! Everything since then has been desperate freestyling storylines and plots. I had to stop watching after his sister discovered who he was and she just kept it moving… with a couple of her signature breathing, crying, anger fits here and there.
That means when I finally get around to watching this show, I’ll have an eight season binge! How many weeks will I need to be unemployed?
Dexter did as well in Saeson 7 as seasons 1&2. Great show still fresh and a ratings leader for all of Showtime.
1 or 2 more seasons is a given.
How could Moonves and Blank not recognize that. MCH is even directing this season.
no Brainer.
i think les moonves should do more thinkin’ and less moonves’!
not sure why you’re all knocking Dexter… it’s one of the best shows on TV, even if it’s not always perfect. And last season was one of the strongest (although I agree the “Doomsday Killer” plot should be forgotten).
The obvious way to go with next season — turn Debra into a serial killer and pit Dexter against her.
I don’t get the appreciation for season four. I think it was perhaps its best execution of its Big Bad format, but at that stage, it still had been flailing around with the Big Bad format for a long time, so like every season it was a non-starter. There was a great performance, but there was no tension, no drama, no resolution. I just absolutely do not understand the hype. The first two years had a much stronger sense of morality, tension and humour — anything could happen! By the fourth year, any big shockers were already trite.
Anyway, it might sound impossible, but I really dug the beginning of season 7. It began to get boring and the season whimpered out but am definitely looking forward to seeing how they end the show. High hopes once again!
Dexter was great seasons 1,2,–the wife thing–Rita was annoying.
John Lithgow was last–guest star who made the show worth watching:
Julia Stiles (Lumen)became Dexter’s accomplice it took away the secret that we shared and Dexter’s coolness.
The following season with Colin Hanks (and I like) was even worse.
Last season loss its intensity–it was still OK but it loss something.
I have to agree with you. The John Lithgow season was gripping. Since then, meh.
The show was best when Cerrone was running it. When he left and Clyde Phillips took over the quality plummeted (season 3?) Lithgow casting saved the lackluster writing in 4. Since Scott Buck took over everything went downhill even faster.
You are soooo on the right track. If I might provide some history:
Daniel Cerone was never the Showrunner. He worked very closely with Clyde Phillips who was the show runner for Seasons 1-4. Daniel was the CO-Executive Producer Season 1 and became EP for season 2. He did not return after season 2.
Clyde Phillips was Showrunner Season 1-4. Chip Johannessen was Showrunner of Season 5. Scott Buck came in as showrunner for 6, 7 & 8.
Imlove history! You are so right…after Season 4, I closed the door!!!!
Alot of people say the show has dipped in quality the past few seasons and maybe it has, but I have still enjoyed the show tremendously and I absolutly hate the fact that it is ending. Maybe it can go to another network or the “genuises” in charge of it all will change their minds. I know sometimes you tend to hold on to something a little too long because of past feelings but I dont think that is the case for me in this situation. Im gonna miss this show badly! Go to keep dexter going past season 8 on facebook to support our killer for a few more years!
The show is over, there is nowhere to go. Season 4 was weak and it should have ended then. I will look forward not to see Deb anymore. She is even more annoying than Betty Francis (Draper) on Mad Men. Just like the X-Files the show should have ended on a high note and not dragged on just to make money. This should have happend 4 seasons ago.
Yes there have been some let downs with Dexter, but one thing I think we all can agree on and that Dexter was over-all the second best thriller on Showtime next to Homeland. I myself will miss America’s Favorite Serial Killer! Michael C. Hall is and always will be the greatest and most memorible serial killer on television. Long live Dexter Morgan!!!!!I want MORE!
Dexter show is awesome! When it started so original fresh last couple seasons dexter did some things werent dexter from the first seasons .This season i dont know who dexter is and he doesnt know! But it was a compelliNg crazy never could figure season .
