EXCLUSIVE: Mandy Moore is leaving ABC’s single-camera comedy pilot Pulling. The project, written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky and directed by Jason Moore, revolves around three dysfunctional women in their 30s living their lives the way they want, even if society tells them they should have it all figured out by this point. Moore was to play one of them, Louise, who is optimistic and desperate to snag a husband. Moore was the first actor cast in a major role on the pilot, based on the praised 2006 British series. June Diane Raphael was cast as the lead and supporting actors were added. Word is those castings changed the dynamic, and Moore’s character evolved, leading to Moore’s exit. “Mandy is a pro, and has been very patient and accommodating with us,” Pulling producers said. “As we moved closer to production, it was clear we needed to go in a different direction for the character, and Mandy agreed to do what was best for the show. She’s an immensely gifted actress and we hope to have the pleasure of working with her again.”
Indeed, ABC has been very high on Moore. The network produced a comedy pilot starring the actress last season and earlier this season bought a Rich Appel comedy project she was attached to with a put pilot commitment. “Many things change quickly as a pilot moves into production,” Moore said. “And in this case, Lee and Gene moved the character in a different direction, it was clear this wasn’t right for me. Rather than jeopardize the show, I asked to step aside. They and ABC were very accommodating, and wish them all the best in the fall. It’s a terrific show that worked so well in the UK, I hope it gets the audience it deserves here.”

That familiar sound you hear is….another Aaron Kaplan project imploding.
Seems like an NBC kind of move.
So now you have a pilot staring June Diane Raphael? Why not pair her up with Jan Michael Vincent and make them owners of a small father/daughter helicopter tour business.
Lee and Gene are amazing and they wrote a really great pilot. Moore was miscast. How is Moore going to be the funny friend to June Raphael? They clearly need women on wither side of June who are FUNNY. Moore is sweet and fun but not funny.
Have you not seen her in SAVED? She is a great actress. I miss her on screen, not sure what happened to her wedding movie with Kellan Lutz.
Her movie with Kellan Lutz is on Netflix.
Anna Camp.
How refreshing to hear of an actress of our generation behaving like such a…professional! I’ve liked Moore for a while now, if she can find the right role, lookout.
So glad that someone else was thinking this.
Ooh. “Desperate to catch a husband.” What actress wouldn’t jump at such an original and not-at-all sexist role?
Still wonder why we can’t create good TV series and have to copy the Brits and Aussies.
Foreigners have copied/borrowed from far more American shows than the other way around.
Hmmm, this sounds like …Sex and the City. And no one can top Kristin Davis’s portrayal of Charlotte.
Why do they need to “GO IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION” with the character when the characters have already been established on three seasons of a genius series from England? Stop pretending American writers are better and let Sharon Horgan adapt her own damn series. Tell your EVP of Casting to STFU and quit forcing actors on to pilots just because they have holding deals with them, when those actors are totally wrong for the series.
ABC should just sign Mandy onto Once Upon A Time as Rapunzel… She played the voice in Tangled and she’s a good enough actress to be able to play the character on the show, so why not?
When will Hollywood realize Mandy Moore is never gonna happen.
Mandy is actually a good actor who, like many, have been in lousy movies made from terrible scripts…like that ridiculous film with Diane Keaton!
JR, you are a loser. Stick to Shitney, I mean, Britney. Mandy is a talented singer and actress.
she MAY be an ok singer, I wouldn’t know (but I have my doubts). She is not an actress.
For a network allegedly so desperate to be in the Mandy Moore business, ABC sure seems to find ways to not be in the Mandy Moore business. No one else finds this… conspicuous?
Note to network star-f–king boneheads; Friends cast were all unknowns but had chops. Things turn out pretty well if you cast talented people instead of “stars”.
People want stars. Majority want to see known faces. Popularity sells. Execs follow money. Everything is economics.
Now try to read in loop until you understand.
Gee, what a sarcastic wise ass you are. Stars fail as often as unknowns as their persona overshadows the show.
I will say that when Les Moonves was hired by CBS, his first move was to recruit known “stars” (i.e., Bill Cosby) as it was a way to gain attention to the network until he could get new shows on the air that he REALLY wanted (younger demographic). His strategy worked out well.
Seinfeld, E.R., Roseanne, Sopranos, and most of the popular TV and cable shows are/were cast with unknowns and C-D Lister’s.
True. Mandy Moore isn’t funny. neither is Anna Camp (she was terrible in the Mindy project. She is one note). June Diane is HILARIOUS, and they need to cast someone who GETS it to replace Mandy Moore. They should scout Funny or Die for funny women who write for themselves like June does.
They should cast Casey Wilson. Happy Endings will be cancelled soon, might as well team her up with her real life best friend June.
Jillian Bell from Workaholics as Louise. Maribeth Monroe (also Workaholics) as Karen – if you want to replicate the characters from the original series, these two would fit perfectly. Still not sure if this is really a show for ABC though…
Says Jillian Bell’s manager
If you’ve seen the original series, you’ll get it. She even has the same look as Rebekah Staton. Louise isn’t supposed to be a Disney Princess, she’s supposed to be kind of frumpy.
I’m sad to see Moore leaving this project as she was the one bright spot in it. June Diane Raphael is awful.
Lucy Punch was bright spot on Ben and Kate. Very much looking forward to seeing her. June Diane Raphael was bright spot on Animal Practices. Her Burning Love performance is fine and guest role on Party Down was hilarious.
So why ABC shouldn’t try to combine two bright spots from NBC and FOX failed sitcoms and create truly great series ? Apt 23 already out, Happy Endings hanging by the thread. It’s time for smart decisions.
Mandy Moore is likeable as an actress, but limited. She’s one note and one facial expression. That’s why none of her pilots worked, and people outright cheered when she got killed off Grey’s Anatomy.
Agreed. Mandy Moore is a mediocre actress with a very limited facial expression- very similar to Jennifer Lawrence. Too bad for her, because she is mediocre in the singing and acting department. The poor girl cannot compete with the best.
She’s got more talent in her pinky than you do. Her voice is much better than Britney’s. She has an excellent voice and chose to change music styles. Her albums may not sell well, but she is genuine and I will always support her. She is a good actress. Sorry she doesn’t get naked or sell out like whomever you like.
She’s sweet. But what I want to know is WHEN
is her husband going to release a new album?
I’m looking for any information on a production company called; “Cry Havoc Productions”, they do documentaries for National Geographic, Discovery Channel etc. They primarily do Doc’s on motorcycles, exotic and high end cars. The Principal owner is a Dylan Weiss, with his father Milton B. Weiss. If you know how to reach them please respond. thanks,
CS
save yourself the trouble and just watch the original Brit version. ABC will never be able to do it justice.
Good actors aren’t necessarily “funny” unless the script is funny. Moore has been very funny in movies, She is a good actress. She was extremely funny in American Dreamz with Hugh Grant (rent it!) The actors on Friends were funny because they had funny characters and funny scripts. If it had been a drama they probably would have been just as good. They are actors. Not to say that some actors don’t have great comic timing, but I happen to think Moore does. This sounds like a total trainwreck and all sides are trying to put a nice face on it. I wish her the best.
cause she is busy?
This show is dead and buried and no one cares about it anymore. Move on. It was doomed from the start, so why would any actress, especially one with top box-office cinematic, theatrical and music performance and recording pedigree like Moore, want to be involved with such an imploded and neglected unbankable disaster with no signs or hope for success. It just doesn’t make sound bankable sense for ABC to blow more money on this sinking tank of tainted seaweed and catguts.
