EXCLUSIVE: Mandy Moore is set as the female lead opposite Ben McKenzie in the CBS/Warner Bros Television drama pilot The Advocates, written by Bruno Heller and directed by David Nutter. It centers on lawyer Shannon Carter (Moore) and ex-con Henry Bird (McKenzie), who team up as “victim advocates,” going to the very edge of the law to right wrongs and fight for the underdog. Once a take-no-prisoners Assistant District Attorney, Shannon now works as a victims advocate after learning the truth about her tragic past and connection to an unjustly incarcerated man. The casting for WME-repped Moore comes less than a week after she exited ABC comedy pilot Pulling. Her previous drama series experience includes an arc on ABC’s flagship drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Sounds like CBS alright.
I knew it she was going to choose this one as her next project! Good for her and for CBS.
This is going to be an interesting choice! Go Mandy!
I always wonder who producers have in mind before going with a newly freed up hot commodity.
They made a lot of offers on this one.
Hmmm…I’m an attorney and can tell you that there are veeeeery few female attorneys who look like Mandy Moore. All the hotties went to business school, unfortch.
Thank heavens I’ve only had to go to court three times in my life, but as it happens all three times the lawyers I’ve found have been very attractive women. I don’t know that they looked like Mandy Moore, but all three were very attractive. And once the lawyer representing someone I was negotiating with was so beautiful she was even more attractive than Miss Moore (and she was the most hardcore brutal to deal with). I don’t have as much experience as you, but the little experience I do have is very consistent with Mandy Moore as a lawyer.
Still can’t believe they picked up this script vs danny strong’s freeman law. The whole penalty/pilot commitment game really kills quality scripts that should triumph over the schlock with a penalty attached
I don’t see it. She was great in “Saved!” but I can’t imagine her co-carrying a series — not opposite Ben McKenzie, who’s been so great on “Southland” for the last four years.
I can see her in a comedy, but not in this.
A better dynamic would be a more mature female lead opposite McK to flip the script a bit. But this is Hollywood. Get the young name.
The biggest and perhaps only reason I like Mandy Moore is that she’s married to Ryan Adams, and I love that she’s keeping him straight and highly productive. Thank you, Mandy!
After I read that Ben McKenzie had been cast, and I really hope he’s able to follow through and accept the role because it sounds like it’s got studio and network backing to go, I’d seen that Ben’s character’s sister had been cast, but not the Shannon part. I think that Ben McKenzie and Mandy Moore would have great chemistry and bring in viewers. A win-win.
I smell the scent of cancellation in the air.
I’m sure several people like you say a show will be canceled quickly before even giving it a chance. But… I have faith in this script, and Ben McKenzie knows very well that even though loads of people kept saying Southland wouldn’t make it past Season 1, it’s still going and in S5 (albeit on a different network).
I wonder how long it will be before this show gets cancelled – because it will.
I think this was a smart move for Mandy Moore. Though I enjoyed the UK version of Pulling, American adaptations are hit-or-miss. In addition, this pilot is being directed by David Nutter. He has an excellent track record of directing pilots that are picked up by a network.
I think she great in tangled and im not being sarcastic i mean not all people are born to be lucky and successful
