EXCLUSIVE: After spending the last eight years as Director of Development for Sony Pictures in New York, Mark James is leaving that post. On April 2, he’ll launch James Literary Consulting, a book-to-film scouting company. James has been a sharp exec for Sony, responsible for finding and championing books for features. Among the books he identified early and helped shepherd are Julie & Julia, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and the Michael Grant novel Bzrk, which the studio bought for Josh Donen to produce.
James will begin his venture scouting for two clients: Columbia Pictures and Michaels-Goldwyn, the production partnership between Lorne Michaels and John Goldwyn. James had experience with them when he was an executive in the Paramount Pictures New York office for four years, helping steer such books to that studio as Twilight Saga and Sahara. Before that, James worked for Deb Schindler and for Julia Roberts’ Gotham-based companies. He started as an editor at Avon Books and Regan Books, working with such authors as Ray Bradbury, Neil Gaiman and James Carlos Blake.
“It was time to try to start something new, to challenge myself and do something entrepreneurial,” James told me. James has been the only Gotham-based creative executive for a major studio. It’s not immediately clear whether Sony would look to place another exec in New York; with James still sleuthing books for the studio, they might not need one.

He was not the “only Gotham-based creative executive for a major studio.” Why do LA people continue to blindly hate on New York?
IQ envy
I would jealousy, but it’s probably just ignorance. LA is a town where the only thing going on is entertainment. NY is a town where everything is going on in every single possible field.
Yeah right. New York City is losing its population. It’s too expensive and crowded. (Word on the grapevine is that manners are in short supply as well.) Oh and by the way, didn’t its greedy and destructive residents a.k.a. finance professionals cause the 2008 financial crisis and many more before that…
It isn’t hate, it’s that with so many boutique lit agencies in New York, there’s little to no need for an LA-based studio to have a salaried employee doing the same job. Better to outsource to a third-party and save a few bucks in the process.
Congrats Mark!
Mark is one of the best scouts out there – good for him.
All that’s left of major players seem to be Rudin, (the shell of) TWC, and Focus – and even though longtime staples like Tribeca, Random House, and Likely Story are anchored in NY, they have moved their creative execs to LA. No buyers left in NY!!!
not just the buyers. talent all around is scarce.
I believe Mike F is in NYC, which hardly makes it a ‘why to LA people blindly hate, etc.” So, slow your LA tirade to a Lincoln tunnel Crawl, por favor. If that’s not an option, please stay East of Lincoln blvd when touring our lil city by the sea.
Judging from the photo, he’ll be dividing his time between this endeavor and his position as Captain of the Senior Rugby team at St. George’s school for Boys.
Yay Mark! Smart. Great taste. Hard worker. Liked by everyone. Love!
Sorry to say, he is not the last standing creative exec at a major studio here on the east coast…. Might want to have your facts straight. I’m still here.
