Matt Lauer criticized NBC over Ann Curry‘s dismissal and says he offered to quit. At least that’s the way NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke remembers it according to a piece today from Howard Kurtz at The Daily Beast. The offer came amid Today‘s declining ratings and the messy departure of Ann Curry in June in favor of Savannah Guthrie. “If you think the show’s better off without me, let me know, and I’ll get out of the way,” Burke said Lauer told him. Burke said no way. Lauer had taken the lion’s share of criticism for how Curry left the show, with some reports blaming him directly for forcing her out. The backlash of that move was the start of a ratings crater — the next month, rival Good Morning America beat Today in total viewers and the 25-54 demo for the first time in 17 years. “I don’t think the show and the network handled the [Curry] transition well. You don’t have to be Einstein to know that,” Lauer told the website. (In fact, former NBC News president Steve Capus told Kurtz that Lauer told the network to give Curry time to adjust to her relatively new role as co-anchor. “He was quietly and publicly a supporter of Ann’s throughout the entire process. It is unfair that Matt has shouldered an undue amount of blame for a decision he disagreed with”, Capus said.) Lauer added, “We were seen as a family, and we didn’t handle a family matter well”.

The Daily Beast said Lauer pondered leaving the show himself and received permission to talk to ABC, CBS and HBO. In discussions with NBC, he was told the plan to remove Curry was happening whether he left or not — a decision ultimately made by then-exec producer Jim Bell and Burke. After he signed a big multiyear deal to stay, Lauer met with Curry over lunch at the Four Seasons, where they agreed her leaving would be bad for the show. He advised to her hire an agent and that they should take their concerns to NBC brass.
Lauer also said he tried to get NBC to sign Katie Couric and bring her back to Today before she eventually landed at ABC. From Kurtz:
Couric was receptive to the idea. She was shopping a syndicated show, and she and Lauer were talking about doing the show together. Their plan was to sell the daytime program to NBC and feature Couric on Today during the year and a half until the show could get on the air and Lauer would be contractually free to join her. Couric could be a Today co-host, perhaps as part of a troika with Curry, who had already been offered the job. NBC executives debated the plan, but Burke rejected it after concluding that the syndicated show would be too expensive to produce. Couric teamed up with ABC instead.

People unwilling to admit that Curry was a poor choice. When I see Ann Curry I expect serious news. I expect politics, world affairs etc. It would be like expecting Sam Donaldson to host the Today show. It isnt a good fit. It is not an indictment of Curry or even Lauer. It is an indictment of whoever thought she would work. To be honest Savannah Guthrie isnt really a good choice. When I see her I expect legal advice on the latest “case of the week”. Natalie Morales is the perfect choice.
that should read “people are unwilling”
Tbis is ridiculous. Here is a short list of the co-hosts of morning TV with serious journalistic cred – Tom Brokaw, Barbara Walters, Charlie Rose. John Chancellor, Hugh Downs, George Stephanopoulos, and Diane Sawyer. The problem with the current team is they have no journalistic credibility and jettisoned the only who did. They should move this show to the entertainment division with Access Hollywood.
Much of your list is quite funny. Thanks for the laugh.
Sam would be GREAT.
Some people didn’t think Ann was right for the job. Some people think Matt is getting a bum rap over this debacle. Some people just don’t get that the TODAY show is an institution that has come to stand for America, kinda like apple pie. Even though the brass has certainly displayed errors in judgement before ( replacing Jane Pauley with Deborah Norville)it’s insensitivity was never so blatantly carried out by the cast in such a cold unfeeling way for the public to see. They all looked so cheesy…and undignified. On top of that their glib “the show must go on” attitude after Ann’s departure was a bit hard to witness. No celebration of Ann’s
career, no punctuation of how much they cared…just wide-eyed indifference, “deer in the headlights” “glad it easn’t me” attitude
from Al to Lauer. Even now Lauer doesn’t lament the loss of a dear friendship, just haow it could have been handled differently.
I don’t blame him I am just disappointed and don’t feel comfortable welcoming them into my home at 7AM anymore.
Karma, Matt. Matt, Karma.
where was this last summer? it’s suspect to me.
Feels suspect to me, too. Too late; too neat; too convenient.
When will Matt Lauer and NBC realize that the audience is never going to believe anything they say ever again? All of this is spin and spin and spin. During the Ann Curry debacle, we saw Lauer for the snake he is and no amount of PR wizardry can undo that.
ANN CURRY WAS GREAT I MISS HER EVERY DAY.
Great comment by ‘m,’ I heartily concur.
If Matt was responsible for Curry being forced out, he should stand tall because she was absolutely terrible. She is good at reading copy but when it came to live interviews she stunk.
The minute after that show ended I never turned on the today show on in my home again. I was a loyal viewer for two decades. I do not believe Matt Lauer and do not like him. Most importantly I very much dislike Samantha gunthry. The best news is I really enjoy good morning America which I had never watched before. Now I am a loyal viewer. If I miss I dvr. So thanks for pushing me away!!!!
You are so right!!!! I too have never watched Today since that infamous day. What the %$# do they mean saying Anne “wasn’t supposed to cry” ?! She was heartbroken and HUMILIATED. Matt Did NOT support her. As all former Today viewers saw, Anne was trying, and Matt would not acknowledge her jokes or even look at her if she tried to connect with him – how is that being supportive.
He refused to engage with her and then complained there was no chemistry – maybe if he had worked WITH her instead of behaving like a spoiled child who was pouting because his little scheme with Katie didn’t work out, he wouldn’t be the public object of ridicule.
Completely agree!!!!
At least they admit the entire thing is was a huge mess. I watch TODAY everyday, and although Anne wasn’t the best anchor, she definitely got the short end of the stick while Savannah flew to the top spot undeservedly. Now Anne is hardly seen at all on NBC News which is a real shame, because she was great at many other things. It just seems that Anne has lost her career and been unfairly punished as a result of this entire thing. I can’t even remember the last time I saw her on TV. Now TODAY is just okay, not great like it was with Meredith. If Matt leaves it will be just downright unwatchable. However, Willie Geist seems to be doing very well in the 3rd hour….maybe a glimmer of hope…?
I switched to CBS This Morning. I tried GMA but it pales in comparison to the CBS show.
Yep. CBS This Morning is for people who haven’t forgotten how to read.
Yo Mr. Teflon/Matt let me get out my tiny violin. Really such a page out of the Old Boys Network Playbook. Soooo passive-aggressive and cliche and probably hatched on a golf course. Ann Curry consider yourself lucky that you got out of that joke of a news show. Channel surfing the other morning and came across Steve Harvey sitting in at the top of the 8 o’clock hour. When Brokaw was on, 8-8:10am always used to be a hard news segment.
no matter the spin they give it, the downhill spiral was due to the personnel not the stories. The show was doing amazing with Matt & Meredith, they had amazing chemistry (better than Matt & Katie I think) and Meredith brought hard news credentials with her nutty side. I love Ann, she might not have been the best fit, but then they jump into a worse choice Savannah Guthrie? It didn’t make sense, Natalie is 100 times better, or they could have shopped around from GMA and gotten Elizabeth Vargas or one of the other co-hosts that are great.
Savannah is horrible, stiff, cold, bad interviewer and even worse in the lifestyle segments. They need to get rid of her.
We should give this guy a new name…Matt Liar…since what he is saying here has got to be the biggest pile of turd and bullcrap I have ever heard. If he wanted to quit so badly to defend Ann Curry, then why didn’t he do so right away, despite the fact Burke stated he wouldn’t let him do so? Simple, since Burke (another tool) would have been on the hook for Liar’s new deal he recently signed. Should Ann Curry be held accountable for their bad ratings? Not entirely, but partially to blame but its Liar that should be the one held accountable and they have been in a freefall since and now he’s just trying to save face and be the good guy/poor soul in that he truly cared all along and wanted to be the sacrificial lamb as well…Who the hell is he trying to kid? PLEASE!!! What an ego-maniac! This show will continue to tank as long as he’s on there as Guthrie has been awful in her role so far. These two have no chemistry at all.
“Offering” to quit is far different from actually quitting.
With what Matt and Ann make a year, why would anyone feel bad for them. They are set for life. This is a story of ego’s and spin to repair Matt’s reputation. Doesn’t Matt make something like 20 million dollars a year? Stick a fork in the today show, it is done.
They will both be fine, will never lose their Quality of life, a house, or face Bankruptcy and financial ruin.
BTW: Aside from what tv morning show anchors make.
Mr Greenblatt and his Cable crew minions have a major spending problem. Just look at “Smash”. BIG budget, no ratings.
And the fact that they are fifth place. Watch them all get raises.
It is surprising that Steve Burke/ Comcast allows the blank check mentality. Money to burn.
Feel bad for the people that were layed off from NBC last year, all in the name of cost savings.
Feel bad the the Millions of Americans that are unemployed and can find no work at all.
The Today Show needs a complete overhaul. For a once, well-respected news show, it has become a joke. Between the Ann Curry debacle, the promotion of Savannah Guthrie (instead of the deserving Natalie Morales), Al Roker’s sharting-in-the-White House escapade, the all-too frequent Kardashian appearances, and the tedious attempts at appearing as though they are all one, big happy family, it’s become painful to watch. Instead of 4 hours, it should be 2 hours of news, and, perhaps 1 hour of lighter fare. I’d like to see Hoda Kotb and Lester Holt at replace Matt and Savannah. (p.s., the drinking shtick in the 4th hour tiresome and unfunny.)
Sounds like a publicist.
“Lauer met with Curry over lunch at the Four Seasons,”
Personally I like Ann curry she fit the quad news setup. But she was bland in that news reader way. But I gave her Fred 100 % when they fired her. Savannah well she’s like Anne Hathaway, cute but sort of like Barbie’s best friend. You really want to see Barbie. ( jane). NBC has issues for two reasons. First celebrity real estate, no tie reality show guests ( ABC) and no liberal creed ala CBS. They need another Brokaw Midwest propagandist. Unfortunately most of those have chosen to be bloggers.
My family misses Ann Curry. She had a calm persona that served the show well.
Savannah is a ditz. She needs to go.
Love Al, but Matt is getting boring. Lester would be a perfect host. He and Natalie would do well together.
Get rid of the fourth hour.
