EXCLUSIVE: MGM has found a director for its remake of the horror classic Poltergeist. It’s Gil Kenan, who’s best known for helming Monster House and City Of Ember. He separately has set up an original, A Giant, with Lava Bear and The Henson Company. The remake of the 1982 Tobe Hooper-directed pic is being produced by Sam Raimi, Nathan Kahane, and Roy Lee. The original starred Craig T. Nelson and Jobeth Williams as parents in a family whose dream house turns into a nightmare. Kenan is repped by WME and attorney Robert Offer.

Sure, it’s the Spielberg name everyone associates with POLTERGEIST- and his fingerprints certainly ARE all over it- but the movie had Tobe Hooper in the director’s chair, back when that MEANT something.Hooper was. I will argue, the flat-out best horror director of the 1970s (and possibly the WORST horror director of the 1990s, but that’s another story), and although there have been numerous sequels and remakes of those primo early films of his, NO ONE has successfully followed up on a Tobe Hooper film (not even Hooper himself!)
Poltergeist – Birthplace of my clown fear/terror.
(I also NEVER crawl under my bed anymore. Thanks a lot, Steven!)
A remake of Schindler’s List? Perhaps now including the rumored missing 8th page of the list? “Even more listier!” Or perhaps using a new hook – reimaged for more contemporary audience since Nazis are passe’ now. Perhaps set in kindergarten classroom? Or anthropomorphic talking cats?
1941? Reset for Overseas Contingency Operations starring Will Farrell? Seriously, there’s great humor in extraordinary rendition, torture, and targeted assassination of US citizens on American soil without due process.
Silly but True
It is idiocy to remake Poltergeist, it was perfect to begin with! Absolute idiocy!
There is nothing in their library that MGM will NOT remake.
