EXCLUSIVE: While the troubled independent feature Jane Got A Gun got a new director this morning in Gavin O’Connor, fallout continues from Monday’s abrupt exit of helmer Lynne Ramsay. I’m told that Jude Law has formally withdrawn from the film. It is because he signed on to work with Ramsay, best known for the edgy drama We Need To Talk About Kevin. The producers of Jane Got A Gun have tried to hold its cast together when Ramsay stepped out, and this is the second significant star to drop out in the past few weeks. Michael Fassbender also exited, ostensibly because of a scheduling clash with his upcoming X-Men movie; he was replaced by Joel Edgerton. The latter worked with O’Connor on Warrior, so I would imagine he’ll hang in, and the film’s star, Natalie Portman, is also a producer on the film. Ramsay has declined comment. I’ll tell you more when I hear it.

A CW network star is in talks to replace Jude Law.
Huh, so I guess it’s not a woman thing, like everyone was saying yesterday.
Could amateur producer Scott Steindorff be having money problems?
Let’s find out the real story before trying to ruin a director’s career.
It has nothing to do with her being a woman and everything to do with her being unprofessional.
The only person trying to ruin Ramsey’s career is Ramsey. Nobody else.
As a below the line freelancer, I know there are 150 or so crew members whose jobs are on the line. They’re all at will workers, and probably had to turn down other projects because of this one, seeing as they had blocked out however many weeks they had scheduled the shoot. Now they’re probably going to have to scramble so they can make rent next month – and all because of ego driven BS.
Money problems?? Did you not see that Paris Latsis’ 1821 films is Producing, CoProducing or Exec Producing along with Hansomecharlie. Are you not aware the kid is a Billionaire with a huge BBBBBB. No $$ trouble here until they try to recoup their investment with all the delays and changes. They bathe $$$ and wipe their $@)**) with it.
Jason Clarke for Law’s role!!!! Jason Clarke! Underrated and phenomenal actor.
Fassbender drops out 3/11. Edgerton switched from villian to hero 3/11. Ramsay drops out 3/18. Law drops out 3/20. Funny how everyone was after Ramsay, but nobody is curious as to what Scott Steindorff, Aleen Keshishian and Terry Dougas have done– they pushed away some of the most talented actors in the biz, that’s what.
According to another report, Fassbender had conflicts with Ramsay, too. So, yeah, there goes that theory …
Yeah, sure… go with the rumor over the facts. Facts are: he had a scheduling conflict.
“According to another report, Fassbender had conflicts with Ramsay, too. So, yeah, there goes that theory …”
Huh’s on a roll, so don’t confuse him with reality.
NOT TRUE.
We need a movie about the making of this movie
Mel Brooks already made that movie it was called The Producers.
So much drama on this one!
I’d almost have to posit that the behind-the-scenes drama here could be more entertaining than the story itself, which looks to be the same scenario as about a dozen other Westerns from the past — Western characters holing up somewheres & trying to hold off a seige from villanous types.
Also, no way Fassbinder left solely because of scheduling conflicts after all that’s coming to light here. I’m sure it will turn out to be related to all these other issues, whatever they are.So much drama on this one!

Why is this four paragraphs of you saying the same thing over and over?
Just as their name implies, they are VERY INTRIGUED by this one idea. And basically nothing else.
Fassbender fell out because of Lynne Ramsay! He did not want to work with her.
not true filming on x men starts on Monday he couldn’t do both
Go for it, posit. why not? At this point, you almost have to.
This is no surprise. Yesterday’s attacks on Ramsey were unfounded. New theory- Steindorrf throws parties for his CAA “bros” like Jay Baker where everyone has a grand old time. He has some Vegas money that needs to be utilized. “Hey Guys what do you have that is a winner?” Snickering, the agents give him Portman’s dream project that no studio will touch. He puts together a movie with bubblegum and cellotape. It falls apart. True? Who knows?
I need to ask David Styne or Mark Ordesky about this guy. They seemed to have his number years ago.
Attacks on Ramsey were NOT unfounded. A director walking away from a project by not showing up for the first day of shooting is unprofessional, irresponsible and ultimately unforgivable, considering how many people’s lives are affected by this petty drama.
Personally, I want her blacklisted, and I certainly wouldn’t feel comfortable saying yes to a job with her after this. I freelance in this industry and I know how hard it can be when jobs fall through last minute – although I’ve never had a job go away when I was already on set.
I wonder if her actions are going to affect her insurability.
I’m sure there’s plenty of blame to go around for all the drama – but ultimately, she’s the one who chose to walk away the way she did, and to me, that choice is wholly unacceptable. There are ways to deal with creative differences – not showing up for work is not one of them.
It look like Jane got a gun got more action going behind the camera. I can’t wait to see the final film when it debut in the theater.
I can see the writing on the wall.
It’s probably best to just take the tax write-off and let this one die peacefully.
Jude, Jude, Jude. You sign on to work with the type of person who would abandon ship on day one, but when everyone is scrambling to hold the project together, and miracle of miracles, it looks like things will be ok… you quit?
You might have been drawn to it for her, but presumably you liked the script and your costars. You should have stuck with it for theirs (and especially the crew’s) sake.
By the speed that they ‘found’ a new director for the project – I don’t think it was as simple as her not showing up for the first day.
Something hella shady is going on in the PR room and it’s easier to blame the rising female director than reveal the true problem.
It’s a shame because the script is pretty decent.
Oh, of course. This just has to be a sexist conspiracy, right?
SMH
don’t know what happened behind the scenes in this case and i have never worked with the steindorff personally, but he has a horrible reputation. heard many stories about him and none of them good.
I’m loving all these posts from the financiers.
Am I the only one who finds this more entertaining than any TV show? Popcorn, please!
Oh my. What a mess we have here.
between ramsey quiting and jude law hemming and hawing, we can hear that new mexico tax incentive money being flushed down the toilet all the way back to hollywood
Ouch.
I assume they want at least a bit of a name, given the last two actors who have left (Fassbender and Law)? Trying to think of who is available right now on no notice. A lot of filming and summer promotion going on, people are busy. What a mess!
Paging Gerard Buter. Gerard Butler for “Jane Got A Gun” please?
And God, how I hope I am wrong because Butler has been Box Office poison lately. Yet I can see a desperate producer taking a ’300′-sized sledgehammer to the box that says “Break Glass in Case of Emergency”…
Jean-Claude Van Damme is circling. That’s where this one is heading kids. Uwe Boll is lining up to take the reigns.
Milla Jovovich to star.
I know you’re joking, but after “JCVD,” I’d love to see a director use Van Damme in a straight dramatic role!
Bring the VanDammage!
Van Damme begins a movie with a 1st timer next week who has only directed shorts. SWELTER
That should be even “funner” than this debacle.
Van Damme would actually be great to see in a good role. After JCVD and the last two bizarrely excellent Universal Soldier movies, somebody should give him that kind of shot.
Van Damme was the best thing in the awful Expendables 2. The guy has talent and charisma.
Seems like Jane’s Got A Problem…
If the title of this production, “Jane Got A Gun,” is a play on or reference to the title of the classic novel “Johnny Got His Gun,” then this whole thing becomes surreal. This production is losing all its parts just like Johnny did!
I thought for sure it was titled after Aerosmith’s song ‘Janie’s Got a Gun’.
From what I know Fassbender left because of creative differences with Ramsey and also Lynne didn’t even want Jude Law that was Steindorff’s choice.
Somehow the the words “…didn’t want Jude Law” just doesn’t compute in this girls mind.
Seriously. Jude Law is a really good actor and drop dead gorgeous.
That is all.
Don’t start shit. Fassbender left because of a scheduling conflict with X-Men. He’s worked with some of the most insanely rigid, uncompromising directors on the planet – McQueen, Arnolds, Cronenberg, Ridley. It wasn’t a creative issue/argument.
Right, so Law left the film due to the departure of a director that, according to you, didn’t even want him? Yeah, don’t think so.
I guess I was wrong yesterday. Apologies to Ms. Ramsey. I think Ryan Kavanaugh should pick this movie up – he is a filmmaking GOD!

oh don’t pretend to be me, but thank you….
-RnsW
This is confusing, which one is the real me?
-RnsW
What an implosion! Yet something about it comforts me. Perhaps because in a strange way it reinforces that Hollywood, like our government, is us, complete with all the fears, doubt and insecurities.
Great picture of Jude Law, by the way.
I think you meant “replete” not “complete,” but point taken.
Anyone who has to get out of this film get out! It’s a great script and has great people backing it and this film will wind up with the people it’s supposed to have as opposed to people just conveniently doing it.
Jude Law is a talent but his walking doesn’t effect the outcome of this film. If Natalie walks then let’s talk but I am sure there are plenty of amazing A list actors who will come to save the day yet again. It sure is a lot happening at once but anyone who works in this industry knows that this is the name of the game and if you can’t handle it you shouldn’t be in it.
Jude would have been a VERY interesting villain. He is at his best in character parts. Face it, most actors aren’t guaranteed box office draws, depending on the project, including Natalie. She’s had her share of BO ups and downs, too. Her name on this carries no more guarantees than anyone else.
Why hasn’t it been brought up that Lynne Ramsay’s manager is Steindorff’s idiot daughter Jessica Steindorff and that it’s his management company Stone Village Management that gets a cut of Lynne’s deal? Talk about a conflict of interest. Your client won’t take the crappy deal and creative shit being dished out from the film’s producer, YOU, even though YOU represent her as her manager. This guy Steindorff is a scumbag and always has been. Ask his prior financiers how they feel about him after he fleeced them with his bombs, Love in the Time of Cholera, The Human Stain and Penelope.
Peck, you are right on. 3 days ago when this story broke it was all about how Ramsay destroyed Hollywood for women directors (read the threads, people, if you just came in on this story). I have no dog in this movie meltdown but I am a quick understudy for sniffing out lying producers and I am getting a big whiff of BS right about now. (Sorry Natalie – I know you wanted Fassbender (who wouldn’t) but he’s gone and Law is gone.
This once again is not a matter of gossip or politics this is just the nature of the beast. They will find another actor and the film will get made, and production should in someway be thanking the people who have left this picture, it has just put a spotlight on the movie where I’m sure will show up in box office numbers.
Reboot the film. Make it for 8-10M which is what this should cost. Give Nat and her co-stars substantial back-end. Financiers will cover Steindorf’s cost to date, but not at 16M and def not at 25M which is a ridiculous number for this film.
Good point. How in the hell this is a 25M is beyond me.
Because Steindorff does not know what he is doing…
The budgets of Steindorf’s movies are always way to high. No way they bring this down to $8 – 10m.
They must have considered a few to replace Fassbender. Now that Law moved, it will be easy to go down the list. Harder to find a bankable actor though, hope the financing sticks
Such a fascinating trajectory for this film. I must be honest, I avoid Jude Law films like the plague, so I’m not that concern that the movie lost “an actor” so many good ones out there.
I remember a few years ago, when Lynn Ramsay, also was taken off “The Lovely Bones,” she seems to me to do better on projects where she is in creative control and is the producer. Obviously taking orders is not her style. She used the same excuse for TLB she this one, oh, the producers gave notes until the last minute, blah, blah, blah. That’s what a producer does.
Still I always wanted to see what her version of the Lovely Bones would have looked like.
Anyway, back to my original point, I prefer my movies without Jude Law, so maybe I’ll watch this one.
Conversely, I watch all of Jude’s movies. I only became interested in this one when he became attached. Now I don’t care what happens with it.
I guess the people behind the other female western at Sundance are happy that there probably won’t be much competition from this.
