I’ve learned that MTV has decided not to go forward with comedy pilot Hot Mess following the recent departure of the project’s creator/executive producer Lauren Iungerich. The decision comes as MTV brass are screening pilots for potential series pickups. Hot Mess had been considered a top contender based on strong testing and the pedigree of its creator, Awkward creator/executive Iungerich. But, like on Awkward, I hear Iungerich’s voice was at the core of Hot Mess, and, with her gone, MTV executives ultimately decided not to go forward with the project.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

If they’re still going to pick up a comedy, Watching the Wilsons is a real hoot.
Shame. Dont know details but im sure this is another victim of studio execs ruining things. just let the creatives have more control for gods sake. I saw this and liked it a lot, thought all the cast where awesome. Lauren is a rising star, look forward to see what she creates next.
So they killed a show that tested well, why exactly?
A thought: MTV wants to hold on to Lauren as long as possible. They give this show a shot in 2011. Potential issues with cast, but overall, a decent pilot. Consensus, hold over to next season and give it another go. More importantly keeps Lauren happy on their bread and butter for next generation ‘Awkward.’ Cut to redeveloped show. Brand new cast, rewritten script. Lets keep Lauren happy and give her a shot with new version. Better pilot. But again, MTV doesn’t want her splitting time between 2 shows. Catch 22: there’s no show without Lauren. Kill the show and you still have a happy Lauren working on your network because ‘you gave it a shot’
Wow. The new director of programming really messed this one up. Way to go in there and strike out.
Maybe she can revamp Gilmore Girls for MTV. Because that’s what MTV viewers want to see.
“There’s a condom stuck in my vagina and I need you to help me get it out.” I will remember that line forever.
Maybe Comedy Central can snatch away Iungerich.
Is “tested well” a good metric? “I’m With Her” was the best-tested pilot in the history of ABC. Ever heard of it? It didn’t make it through season one.
Wow so take a show that tested amazing from the creator of mtv’s 1 hit awkward and force ruin lauren to exit do to network/lack of creative politics and mess this up. Oh MTV there is a reason why the network is a joke. you will be known for Snooky and Jersey Shore!!! What I have heard this pilot seemed to good for that network.
david janollari is in his beach house giggling. this is MTV’s problem: they wanted to change a show that tested well. common sense people.
Lauren,
I hope you are proud of yourself. You let your ego get in the way and now you not only hurt yourself but screwed over the entire cast and crew who was excited about this getting picked up! Hope you are proud!
Actor
She had nothing to do with this show not getting picked up, bro…
If you really believe that, you’ve never worked a day in the industry.
Major corporations don’t walk because of one lowly voice.
So let me get this straight?
MTV Execs: “Hi Lauren. We didn’t develop the show, but it tested really well. We’d like you to change the direction and do X with it.”
Lauren: “I don’t think X is the right direction for this show… if that’s what you want, maybe you should bring in someone else to do it.”
MTV Execs: “Without Lauren’s voice, there is no show.”
Rational Humans Reading This: “If you respect her voice so much, perhaps you should just listen to her when she thinks where you want to take it isn’t right.”
MTV continues to coast – at a high rate of speed – towards extinction.
I find it hard to believe that her voice was so original that they couldn’t find another writer to keep a frivilous show like this going. it’s not “The Wire” for god’s sake. MTV is just spinning it. There are only about 50 writers within a 5 mile radius of any given coffeeshop that could nail that “voice”.
Read between the lines… It wasn’t very good and the creator knew the axe was coming. Next!
