UPDATED: I have learned that NBC is considering a pilot order to a comedy project produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Prods and actress Anne Heche. I hear the pickup, which will likely be off-cycle, may be hinging on the single-camera comedy landing former Private Practice star Kate Walsh for the lead. Written by Chad Kultgen (The Incredible Burt Wonderstone), Bad Judge is based on an idea brought to Gary Sanchez by Heche. It centers on a hard-living, sexually unapologetic woman — the role Walsh is being courted for — who plays with the law, and whose life on the edge is constantly in balance as she also happens to be a judge in the Criminal Court system. Universal TV, where Gary Sanchez has a deal, is producing. Heche and Jill Messick executive produce alongside Ferrell and McKay.
Following the end of Private Practice in January after six seasons, Walsh has been pursued for pilots, mostly on the comedy side. She has a relationship with McKay and Ferrell having done several videos for their comedy site Funny Or Die. Bad Judge would mark Gary Sanchez’s second comedy pilot at NBC, joining hot prospect Assistance, which landed Krysten Ritter for the lead. Heche stars in NBC’s comedy series Save Me, which is yet to get a slot on the schedule. Wlash is with CAA and Evolution; Gary Sanchez with CAA and WME; Kultgen is with CAA; Heche with Untitled and UTA.

Exciting! I would love to see Kate in a comedy.
Friends helping out friends… Love it!
There’s another word for it: nepotism.
And it’s a major contributor to NBC’s problems.
No, it’s called cronyism, you clod!
nepotism? get your facts straight. kate has been doing comedy and improv for 15 years, including with ucb (of which mckay is a founding member) in its earliest days when they all came to new york together from chicago. she was the only female member of the powerhouse improv team “burn manhattan,” directed by shira piven. is nepotism what they call working with your colleagues now? if that is the case then everyone working in the industry is there by nepotism. you sink or swim by your merit, no matter how you got there. methinks you have no idea what you’re talking about. anyone who watched private practice and grey’s anatomy and couldn’t, even in those “dramas,” see her comedy potential, indeed chops, wasn’t watching. she has the fearlessness and talent–indeed balls–of a lucille ball. i guess you haven’t been on you tube lately.
Kate Walsh was in Kicking and Screaming with Will Ferrell. She has great comedic timing. I have been wanting to see her in a sitcom.
they already have 15 or 16 pilots…why order another this late in the game? does that mean that those that are shooting or have shot already are pretty weak? Or is this a…we aren’t going to air Save Me play and we want to maintain a relationship with Anne…maybe we save face by ordering this pilot even though it will never go to series? Anyone have any insight as to how their pilots that have shot turned out?
Most pilots don’t begin shooting until next Monday.
Maybe the thought of Kate Walsh playing a hot mess of a judge in a comedy seems like a great idea. Certainly better than most of what the network is looking at right now.
Because not one new comedy from this season is worthy of renewal so they want as many options as possible.
^^^ This! Nothing that I’ve read about in terms of a comedy pilot comes close to having the potential this has. Especially because Kate would be associated with it and she is absolutely perfect for this part…
I will watch anything for Kate. I love her.
This pilot just became interesting to me. I am a fan of Walsh and would love to see her do a comedy.
I love Kate Walsh after PP, might def watch
She definitely belongs in a comedy. It might be a bit too quick, but whatever, she needs this after being in Shonda Rhime’s lame and repetitive prison for so long.
Kate Walsh is one hot motherfucker. Yes, please, and thank you.
Anyone who has ever seen Walsh on a talk show for more than three minutes knows she has a great sense of humor, did her time on the Drew Carey show and several movie comedies. That said, she’s an honest to God tv star, who isn’t afraid to show her flaws and, even though she’s gorgeous, she’s the kind of woman you’d like to have a beer with. Perfect casting for a great idea.
A comedy, and character is a judge. Kate Walsh should always be cast in characters that can wear great shoes. That would not happen if she had been yet another TV cop/agent. This is a relief.
I want to see this! Pronto! This is a pilot that needs to be picked up. As good as Kate is as a dramatic actress I really think comedy could be her forte. IRL she is funny as heck…
