NBC‘s single-camera comedy pilot Donor Party has been on hold because of difficulties casting the lead. The project, written by Alex Schemmer, centers on an irresponsible man forced to grow up when he discovers he has children resulting from his days as a sperm donor. I hear NBC went heavily after Rainn Wilson and Seann William Scott, offering both actors episodic guarantees, and decided to put a pin in the pilot after both passed. NBC has now slated the project, from Lionsgate, Media Talent Group and Universal TV, for off-season production. NBC also recently postponed drama pilot Wonderland because of the complexity of production for the Alice In Wonderland-themed project.

OK,NBC, if you actually carry through and replace Leno with J Fallon I’ll give your new shows a chance for the first time since 2010. This sounds mildly intriguing.
They went after two longshots and then put the whole thing on hold. How lazy and broken is this industry?
This sounds like a plot hatched by the producers of 1600 penn. they think if they can kill enough pilots, they can get renewed.
agreed. a big name is not going to attach itself to THIS. this is meant for an up-and-comer.
i could give NBC a nice long list of actors they should test for this instead of putting it to hold.
morons.
lazy morons.
NBC is trying to copy what ABC did on Wednesday and launch multiple comedies at once with established names.
The problem is that anyone with any name recognition is (rightly) relunctant to star in an NBC comedy at this point, for obvious reasons.
My guess is they’ve changed tack with this particular show and decided to target a post-Olympic launch in the hope they can grab someone off a busted pilot.
This exact logline is currently airing in Canada – it’s called “Seed”. Cheaper to buy an already produced product than re-make it.
Lame concept anyway.
Dear Everyone that refers to SEED every time there is an article about this pilot: WHO CARES. This pilot is NOT based off of that one and even if it was, TV shows are re-created based on foreign formats ALL THE TIME. Deadline just did an article about it last week. Give it a rest you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Dear Seed, (I mean the writer/producer of the show), nobody obviously cares as much as you do. I mean, how could anybody care as much to make that connection that people keep bringing that up? It’s not our fault your pilot isn’t panning out, especially after you lifted it from another writer. Now go be creative and steal another idea…
Sorry your unoriginal pilot got put on hold, bro.
NBC might be desperate enough to start buying their ratings-disasters-to-be rather than making the effort to dvelop them. When any network starts running foreign shows anyplace but a summer burn-off slot, that’s when we know they’ve given up and they’re done.
I feel for all the crew who just lost their pilot because NBC couldn’t lock up their cast.
I forgot I know him. He’s nice. Why doesn’t Alex star in it? He’s an actor and good looking. Lena and Mindy can star in theirs, why not Alex? I haven’t seen the kid in years but I remember him being a good guy and not like most of the d bags I’m friends w in LA
This would be perfect for Alan Ritchson, Thad Castle from Blue Mountain State
Why don’t they try Ethan Suplee? He’s a funny guy, seems to fit the criteria, has a surprising amount of range, and is on the market. And they have that talent deal with Dane Cook, who may suck as a comedian, but is a decent actor.
Would even NBC attach Dane Cook to another project after Next Caller? Surely they couldn’t be that stupid…
This show is already doomed even before it started…bad concept and nobody truly wants to take the lead in this series. Give it up and come up with something different NBC!
Which gets made first — this show or the remake of the Canadian film STARBUCK? Only so many times this plot is fresh.
