Writer, producer, and longtime Joel Schumacher collaborator Eli Richbourg suffered a brain aneurism in Paris Wednesday night, Deadline has confirmed. He was 42. Richbourg got his start in the art department on Schumacher’s Batman Forever, became his assistant on A Time To Kill, and rewrote many of the director’s films. He rose to second unit director on 8MM, associate produced Flawless, and directed second unit and served as associate producer on Tigerland, Bad Company, Phone Booth, and Veronica Guerin. He co-produced Phantom Of The Opera and executive produced The Number 23 and Blood Creek. Richbourgh’s 2001 short Calvin Stoller: The Last Abstract Expressionist was executive produced by Schumacher.
Most recently Richbourg rewrote Schumacher’s Trespass and sold a Rambo reboot pitch to Millenium. As VP of Film Development at video game company Ubisoft he was involved in developing Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell movie projects. Last fall Richbourg had his own WWII soccer pic script Dynamo, based on Andy Dougan’s book Dynamo: Defending The Honour Of Kiev, set for production by Pathé, Riviera Pictures, and FlynnPictureCo. with Gerard Butler starring. Richbourg was repped by Principato-Young. He is survived by his wife Gaelle and 2-year-old son Paul. A fund has been set up to help support Paul’s education. Email richbourgmemorial@gmail.com for instructions on giving.

He was an amazing individual and he will be sorely missed.
Eli, we will miss you dearly. xo
Very sad. You’ll be missed, Eli.
He was a terrific guy. Thoughts to his family
An incredible person and talented as can be. You’re going to be missed, Eli. Love you.
Eli was a great friend… I am in shock. He was so happy in Paris….. Je suis triste…
Bon courage mon ami
Great smart, passionate man. Not fair. Tragic.
There are some people who attract light. There are some people who reflect light. There are some people who ARE light. Eli was one of those guys. This is not said in an effort to make someone who has died greater than they were; this is just the truth. In his presence, you always felt good. He made you feel better than the person you actually are.
My heartfelt sympathy to his family. He will be missed.
I think of Eli every time I hear “When You’re Smiling”. Such a sweet, talented, amazing person.
What the…
I am so sorry to hear this. RIP Eli. He was so kind to me at the beginning of my career. A real mensch.
This is such sad news. Eli was a gifted and kind person, he had achieved so much with his talent and had so much yet to do. My heart goes out to his wife and little son, who I was fortunate to meet. Rest in peace Eli, you will be missed by many.
I am in shock. Eli was a terrific guy with a big heart. He was a light and the world is a better place for his having lived. In the words if Richard Bach “don’t be dismayed by good-byes a farewell is necessary before you can meet again and meeting again after moments or lifetimes is certain for those who are friends.” Goodbye Eli your light will never truly go out.
Very nicely said… Bravo!
He would give you the shirt off his back. Such a goodhearted dude. I’m sat here and I can’t stop crying. Fuck.
What an amazing and sweet and talented guy!! May he rest in peace…
Heartbreaking. A super smart, amazing, compassionate man that our industry and world will miss terribly.
He always told me to let things roll off my back. “Duck’s back, Tone, Duck’s back.” Can’t let this one roll off, buddy. Sorry. Love ya.
Devastating. I lost one of the smartest, most compassionate, hardest working people I have ever met. He did it all the right way: writing, surfing, Yale, friendship, movie making, and more recently fatherhood. God bless you, Eli.
I met Eli and his family when they were visiting LA and was completely charmed by each one of them and their interactions. Deep sympathies to Eli’s beautiful family.
Eli was an incredible friend that I loved doing business with. He was smart, attentive, deeply invested in whatever projects he was working on. He handled himself professionally, but always with heart. He will be missed greatly. Sincerest condolences to his family.
His kindness and thoughtfulness will always be remembered.
Eli was one of the good ones. He was a good friend, an exceptional person and truly one of a kind. His creativity and generosity of spirit and talent blessed my life in many ways, and I will never forget it. The last time I saw him was in Paris; we shared a drink in an old pub on the Seine after a long shoot. One of my favorite memories ever. Safe travels, my friend.
So sad to hear this news about Eli…really enjoyed working with him here in Ireland some years back. He was a true inspiration and a great guy to have know. My sincerest sympathies to all his family and friends…
Eli wore his spirit on his sleeve, a bright and beautiful light, and we are better for having known him. We will cherish the memories we have of him, and mourn the ones we don’t. He went out in flames at the prime of his life, but I think Paris brought him some of his greatest joys, and I am comforted to think he was living out his dream. We will miss him greatly.
It seemed like just yesterday when Eli and I would talk about film production. We had film and cycling in common . What a class act and great person . He will be truly missed.
