After a lengthy search, The Office‘s Rainn Wilson has been tapped for the title role in the CBS/20th TV drama pilot Backstrom. Also cast in the project, based on the Swedish book series, is Page Kennedy. Written by Bones creator Hart Hanson, Backstrom centers on Everett Backstrom (Wilson), an overweight, offensive, irascible detective as he tries, and fails, to change his self-destructive behavior. In addition to starring, Wilson will serve as a producer. He segues to Backstrom straight from The Office, which wrapped production on its ninth and final episode yesterday. Wilson, repped by WME and 3 Arts, played one of the Emmy-winning comedy series’ signature characters, Dwight Schrute, since the pilot.
He also co-created and toplined a potential Dwight-centered Office spinoff, The Farm. After it didn’t go forward, Wilson became a hot commodity for pilots, fielding multiple offers. He turned all down, including walking away from a six-episode guarantee on NBC comedy Donor Party, but I hear he responded strongly to Backstrom. This marks Wilson’s return to drama series a decade after his recurring gig on HBO’s Six Feet Under. Kennedy, repped by Abrams Artists Agency and Principato-Young, plays Officer Frank Moto, member of the Special Crimes Unit. He joins co-stars Kristoffer Polaha and Dennis Haysbert.

So no Office spinoff?
I remember he’s great in dramas, ala Six Feet Under, but what a comedic talent too!!!
They announced weeks ago that the Dwight Office spinoff was dead. NBC aired the backdoor pilot last Thursday, and it sucked.
Why would you say it “sucked”? Because it isn’t The Office? You, sir, need your humor recalibrated.
No, it sucked. Bob Even’s humor is calibrated just fine. Rein Wilson is a tremendously talented comedic actor, but that whole world of the spin off was so forced and unfunny it’s amazing that NBC didn’t give it a 24 episode commitment.
Congrats Rainn!
Nooooo, this one crossed off my list.
Isn’t it usually better to take a year or so off before jumping back into a regular series? I think it can be tough to separate an actor from his previous role when his series just ended four months earlier.
Rainn will be great in whatever he does.He has entertained me the past nine years.I really will miss Dwight.Idiot.LOL!
Wow! I didn’t even think about him doing a drama next. Should be interesting to see him in something different so soon.
Backstrom is a good script. I think Rainn can be both hysterical and quite vulnerable/sympathetic. I do wonder about the tough/menacing aspect, though maybe they’re going to cater it his way.
Don’t forget, he’s almost as tall as Tom Selleck.
That OFFICE spin-off “backdoor pilot” — which aired the other night — was absolutely horrid. As in, even worse than the show itself has been over the last couple of years. Won’t take much for this project to be funnier…
That’s just a really solid, great piece of casting. Smart idea. Potential hit.
One thing about him. His comedic timing is epic. Good for him!! And guess what. I bet I would have liked “The Farm”.
Rainn Wilson is a great actor. He’s had experience in drama, and is a surprisingly versatile actor. I also seem to recall hearing people say Bryan Cranston and Steve Buscemi weren’t capable of handling a drama series. They’re doing pretty well. The same goes for comedy. Jeremy Sisto in a comedy? No way! Yet Suburgatory is doing pretty well.
Jeremy Sisto isn’t the least bit funny in Suburgatory. He is there as the “straight man” that the veteran comedy pros in the show play off of.
Page Kennedy is THE MAN
What a shame, they go after Gandolfini, Franz, Giamatti…and now settle on this guy…..all they wanted was a name, instead of the best actor for the job…nothning against Wilson, but not what the script calls for at all..or the books, if you are familiar…
limited thinking, doomed this show…hiring names is getting the networks nothing, where did the guts go to get the best actor for the job?
Exactly right !
Two smart moves by Rainn: get away from NBC and away from Greg Daniels. The latter is brilliant but Rainn deserves better after being married to Greg’s particular brand of comedy for so many years.
I hate that they wasted a whole episode of The Office on The Farm. That whole story line never interested us. It was just creepy and Wilson was smart to move away from it.
Wilson did little known dramas such as “Hesher” and “Super” just to name a bit. His dramatic excellence shined thru these projects. I expect nothing but the same, no matter what he does. “You got it or you don’t, Wilsons got it.” Although an office spin off would probably keep “Dwight Shrute” on television another 9 years (which I would love) whatever he touches turns to gold. Congratulations CBS.
