EXCLUSIVE: Sam Raimi, one of the hottest feature directors at the moment coming off helming blockbuster Oz The Great And Powerful, has signed on to direct Fox hourlong pilot Rake starring Greg Kinnear. This is a major coup for the network and Rake producer Sony Pictures TV, which started talks with the director weeks before Oz opened to a gigantic $80 million at the domestic box office, with its worldwide tally nearing $300 million after 10 days. Rake, which is slated to go into production in a few days, marks Raimi’s first pilot directing gig. In addition to directing, Raimi will serve as an executive producer on the pilot alongside original series creator Peter Duncan, Peter Tolan, Michael Wimer, Richard Roxburgh and Ian Collie. Kinnear is co-executive producing. Based on the Australian comedic drama, Rake follows the chaotic and comedic life of criminal defense lawyer Keegan Joye (Kinnear), brilliant, frustratingly charming, and with zero filter. Rake extends Raimi’s relationship with Sony, where he spearheaded the Spider-Man franchise on the feature side, directing the 2002 blockbuster and its two sequels. In TV, Raimi executive produces Starz’s flagship drama Spartacus. He is with CAA.

Saw the Aussie original series; not funny at all. Now that most leads are Aussies or Brits for USA version they hire a guy who directed a ‘remake’ and think this will make a difference? Sam… run for the hills, unless you need the money or you want to take two steps back.
What “remake” are you talking about?
His “Oz” film (if you mean that) has nothing at all to do with that schlocky piece of junk starring Judy Garland … which is only logical, since it had almost nothing to do with the real “Wizard of Oz”.
Sam Rami did thrillers like A simple plan and The Gift. If he given creative license too infuse that type of tension and style and make it as relevant courtroom drama as The Good Wife. This pilot will be a best bet going to series.
No way. You’re only as good as the material you’ve to work with and RAKE is destined to fail. Sam… you’re better that this. There’s better material out there to lend your name and talent to. Run, run… away. Come back in a few months and see how right I was.
The original was awesome silly seppo
Lets hope it doesn’t end up like Spider-Man 3. What a waste!!!
Well it did not have a canned laugh track and it is based on an anti hero, no wonder you missed the brilliance.
For others who can enjoy fine acting and wonderful writing, check it out.
Hackers leaked a rewrite of the pilot. Its titled, Evil Rake by Sam and Ivan Raimi.
“While on the toilet, Greene, played by Seth Green, mistakenly reads from the Necronomicon instead of his usual Acme Book of Laws because Potter, played by Daniel Radcliffe, switched the covers. His hand immediately get possessed by the demon McGregor, played by Ewan McGregor. The hand goes bad but luckily Greene has a mini chainsaw in his left pocket which he uses to lop the hand off at the wrist.”
Hey wait a minute.
With two guys like Mr. Raimi and Mr. Kinnear anything could happen. I’ll reserve judgment until I see the pilot and second episode. I always give everything a second chance!!!
Another show about a lawyer…. It’s so overdone
