Samsung Mobile just unpacked its next flagship smartphone, christening it the Galaxy S4 and loading it with improved technical specs and nifty functions the company hopes might entice high-end users away from Apple’s iPhone and other competitors. Streamed lived to some 400,000 people over YouTube from New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, the Galaxy S4 announcement increases pressure on Apple and others to improve their own flagship smartphones, particularly to meet stiff competition in faster-growing overseas markets.
Given the increasing smartphone consumption of video entertainment, the Galaxy’s advanced specs should also bolster interest in mobile delivery of Hollywood content, possibly with sophisticated interactive and personalized features. Befitting the entertainment angle and location, the presentation included stage performers showing off different functions and scenarios for using the device during the hour-plus presentation.
At 5 inches diagonally, the S4 has a slightly bigger and significantly higher-resolution screen than its S3 predecessor. The screen is a full inch larger than Apple’s iPhone 5, which was released last fall. The 1080p display has 441 pixels per inch (compared to iPhone 5′s 326 ppi. The larger screen makes using the phone functions somewhat more ungainly but improves video experience, data manipulation and other functions that have little to do with phone calls.
Lighter and thinner than its predecessor, the S4 has a substantially upgraded main camera, at 13 megapixels, a better battery, more sensors for health monitoring, and the ability to simultaneously shoot a scene and include an image of the shooter in the photo. It also includes an infrared sensor for remote-control of TV screens. Samsung also highlighted other other gee-whiz features, including translation capabilities for phone calls plus eye-tracking and gesture abilities to operate the device without pushing buttons and swiping screens.
There’s also a new security system called Knox that can separate work and personal worlds on the same unit, while also allowing content to be shared with home storage devices. A “Group Play” function allows multiple users to simultaneously playback a song or share a photo.
South Korea-based Samsung has become the dominant device manufacturer using Google’s Android mobile operating system. Samsung’s Android-side dominance has led some to suggest it has snatched the crown of cool from Apple. The criticism has become pointed enough that Phil Schiller, Apple’s top marketing executive, this week publicly criticized the shortcomings of Samsung and Android-based devices. Apple’s next iPhone upgrade is due later this year.

Will a smartphone get me a girlfriend? Get me some loving? Will it get me a job or gain my hair back?
Will it give me a million dollars?!
Such trivial things………
probably not but u can make calls and surf the internet.
actually it might find you girlfriend.
just use right apps though.
“check out ibuildapp to build your own app without coding”
If it weren’t for Apple, we’d all be comparing tactile buttons on our flip phones
Hey, Captain Kirk used to flip open his communicator, and sometimes he would twiddle with knobs on the device!
Actually, if it weren’t for the PALM Pilot, you would still pushing buttons. PALM developed the touch screen capabilities before APPLE even invented the first iPod, which, by the way, wasn’t touchscreen. They also developed a written script to text language back when people were still wondering if APPLE existed anymore. Also, the first PALM phone debuted in 2004, three years before the first iPhone debuted. Marketing is the only reason the iPhone managed to kill PALM – functionality-wise, the software was far superior.
And PALM was clearly descended from the APPLE NEWTON, which I’m sure someone else will point out was probably descended from something else.
Yes, it’s a long evolutionary chart that lead to our fancy touchscreen bricks. Some say the iPhone was even a knockoff of the LG Prada from 2006. But there’s no denying that Apple was the first to make this form factor popular with the masses. Samsung and Android are just the equivalent of PC and Windows, a cheaper but more complicated knock-off. But in the end, who cares? Bickering about which tech you use to talk to each other is just as stupid as arguing about which religion you use to talk to God.
Is deadline paid to publish this article?
Its subject is not even remotely relevant to this site.
It might seem that way but I bet Deadline’s traffic is coming increasingly from mobile devices like Samsung’s phones, not to mention Hollywood content consumption. I’m reading and typing on an iPhone 5 now almost wishing that I’d held out for a bigger screen like this S4.
First and foremost just so people don’t think I’m a apple hater, I own and love my iphone and have no interest in the galaxy.
Deadline also published when the iPhone 5 was announced. You clicked and read the article so it got a response.
@Meh, the iPhone did not create the first smartphone. It’s not the fastest, not the most powerful, doesn’t have the best camera, doesn’t have the best battery life doesn’t have the best battery life and doesn’t have the lowest price.
It has a very popular overall package and arguably has the best App Store but its not fair to claim that apple are the first or the best, it’s an industry based on personal preference.
I love that we live in a time where our phones are also decent resolution cameras and look awesome. If Samsung and apple really want to impress me then make a phone that holds its charge.
Is this product placement? What has the plastic blob got to do with movies Or tv ?
Because this little plastic bob is what what a lot of people will be using to WATCH movies & TV (and books, and games, etc). And then talking to friends about what they watched. And thus deciding what future movies & TV will be made. And thus determining whether or not YOU have a job.
It’s the biggest Android phone out there, and is a pretty viable media consumption device so yeah it’s about as relevant as when they post stuff about Apple. So not very.
Samsung is a joke. Whose patents did it steal this time to make the Galaxy S4? Any day now the EU is expected to level a fine against Samsung for abusing standards-essential patents.
Mobile entertainment platforms aren’t relavent to this site? Who are you, Karl Rove?
The presentation with the actor from Smash and all those ‘Broadway’ actors was laughable. Had to turn it off.So cheesy and corny..not a professional Apple presentation despite various innovative features. Sounds like Samsung fans wanted the phone looking differently.
who cares about all the features…does the battery last more then a day?
I fried the battery in one of the s3′s in a freakin week. This plastic thing is merely a toy compared to the IPhone.
I have to admit, I’ve finally bought into the Samsung sales pitch – the S4 will be the first full-priced Android phone I will buy. Honestly, though, I feel like the jump from the S2 to S3 was much more substantial than from S3 to S4.
Hahahah, just had to come back to this for a laugh at all the Apple fanboys. I prefer the ease and reliability of the iOS environment, but anybody not viewing the situation through rose-colored glasses has to admit that Samsung is taking the lead when it comes to hardware specs.
