EXCLUSIVE: The Lord Of The Rings‘ Sean Astin has joined Jason Issacs and Kathryn Morris in CBS’ drama pilot Surgeon General. Written by Samuel Baum and produced by CBS TV Studios, the project centers on Dr. John Sherman (Isaacs), the most powerful doctor in the nation, the Surgeon General, who has 315 million patients. Astin, repped by Innovative, LuberRoklin and Dave Feldman, will play Dr. Fischer, a psychiatrist and a member of Dr. Sherman’s team, overseeing the nation’s mental health. He will next be seen in The Call.

All these high-profile castings on this pilot, and the only dramas CBS viewers watch are NCIS spinoff spinoffs.
Not paying attention I see. CBS owns the Top 20 primetime programs each and every week … the other networks only wish they could come up with a formula to compete.
Note to CBS: Stop saying he has 315 million patients.
The surgeon general is a bureaucrat. That’s all he is.
Does anyone actually believe this pilot will make it to series? It sounds like a parody of a show that CBS would have made in the late 90s back when they decided to exclusively cater to senior citizens.
OTOH, I can actually picture this concept working as a very dark comedy on FX.
Another medical drama! Awesome! How original!
Nepotism in Hollywood simply won’t die. There are at least 1,000 available actors in Hollywood better for this role than Astin. I could go to Home Depot and find a day laborer who’s a better actor.
Nepotism means family giving family jobs.
Who in the Astin family gave Sean this job?
So true. His performances are completely forgettable at best as well.
Surgeon General: The gummint doctor with 315 million patients! Only a liberal could come up with that tagline.
If he has super powers it will be much better. Super Surgeon General to the rescue! They have to go for the teenage boys who will be watching SHIELD and who love super heroes.
The last thing I really want to see is another “medical drama.” I’ve never really been a fan of them. However, since Beth Riesgraf has joined the cast (and I was a huge fan of Leverage), I’m going to give it a try.
We’ll see.
