Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have signed on for a fourth season of the BBC1/PBS Masterpiece drama Sherlock, which started its Season 3 table read yesterday ahead of shooting next week. Cumberbatch, who earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for playing a modern-day, tech-savvy Sherlock Holmes alongside Freeman’s Watson, told the UK’s Radio Times today the pair has agreed to do two seasons after Season 2, which aired on PBS in the U.S. in May. “We’ve agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that,” Cumberbatch said during the South Bank Show Awards today in London. “All I know at the moment is I’m doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three.” He also said he and Freeman would like to do more seasons but it depends on their increasingly busy schedules as well as the schedule of co-creator Steven Moffat, who also runs the BBC’s Doctor Who.
Sherlock last aired in the UK in January 2012. It was originally due to begin filming Season 3 this past January, but again the stars’ busy schedules delayed the start. Cumberbatch was in Germany shooting Wikileaks movie The Fifth Estate in January and Freeman stars in The Hobbit trilogy — in which Cumberbatch also stars. Now Season 3 will air in the winter in the U.S.

Thrilled to bits but also a bit cautious as I dont want that to interfere with Cumberbatch’s film career. He deserves to be a big film star so I hope the BBC are flexible and just work round his film plans. So far they seem to be doing that.
Interfere? There are only going to be 3 episodes to air in 2014.
But the episodes are 90 min- he’s basically shooting 3 movies back to back.
Excellent news. Can’t wait till season 4 airs in 2037.
No kidding! Sheesh. But then again, knowing there’s going to be a forth I’m completely content-ish, in waiting for however long…Gatiss and Moffat…what have you done to us? Benedict and Martin, oh I’ll be watching for sure!
This is indeed good news! I’ve enjoyed the Sherlock episodes I’ve been able to watch on Pbs. Knowing when they will air here ( Winter in the U.S.) is a big plus. Watching these two actors interacting with each other is an absolute joy. Each episode has been a lot of fun! Lots more entertaining than many network programs. Most definitely looking forward to those new episodes during Winter.
Great news! Best made show on television.
If you havent watched Season 2 (episodes 1 and 3) you have missed some of the absolute best in television, or any filmed entertainment.
Saw this a little bit ago, totally made my night!!! This Sherlockian needs more Sherlock. I’m contenting myself now with the amazing Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the many brilliant things that they have been in lately. They are some damn good actors! Benedict IS Sherlock, as far as I’m concerned, and Martin is the PERFECT Watson to Benedict’s Sherlock. The two are such great friends in real life and that clearly comes across on the screen. So excited!!
I agree with you Nicole. Love these two particular actors. A nice pair who play off of each other beautifully. I only wish there were much more episodes, but,oh well. Like I said before,at least now I know when we will have more episodes. More Sherlock makes me happy!
Great news. Of all the recent interpretations of Holmes, I find this to be the most entertaining (sorry CBS, sorry Guy Ritchie). But I am disappointed that each “season” only consists of 3 shows. While commercial-free and 90 minutes or so each, it would be nice to have a few more episodes in each series/season.
While the film commitments of the two principals has something to do with the limited number of episodes offered, it wold be nice to see this increased a bit. The 4 series/seasons yield only 12 episodes – a short one-year season for a series here. Maybe this is more of a mini-series?
I’d like Steven Moffat to write the script for Doctor Strange and for Cumberbatch to play the lead role.
Glad to hear this. Now lets hope PBS shows it the same time as the UK and that they don’t edit the episodes down like they’ve done in the past. We’re as important as the Downton Abbey viewers PBS! Show us some love!!
Of the three current Sherlock Holmes, I love the BBC shows the best. I would love to see all three Sherlocks (Cumberbatch, Downey, and Miller) together at an awards show, such as the Golden Globes. Interestingly, they all included Irene Adler as a principal storyline. Notice how different Dr. watson is from the Nigel Bruce portrayol.
