It’s been quite awhile since viewers saw Benedict Cumberbatch‘s high-functioning sociopath, Sherlock Holmes, step off the side of a building in Sherlock‘s Season 2 finale, The Reichenbach Fall. But today, BBC One’s hit drama had its first Season 3 read-through with shooting to start next Monday. Emmy-nominated director Paul McGuigan, who helmed four of the first six 90-minute episodes, has confirmed he will not be aboard for this season, however. Over the weekend, he tweeted: “#sherlock has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my working life as a director but now I have a movie to make…so stay tuned x“. He’s lined up to direct Frankenstein, 20th Century Fox’s revamp of the Mary Shelley classic novel that has Daniel Radcliffe in talks, and is also working with Cumberbatch on The Man Who, about the life of Beatles manager Brian Epstein.
I’ve confirmed that Jeremy Lovering will direct the first episode of the new Sherlock season. His feature debut, In Fear, which stars Downton Abbey‘s Allen Leech, premiered at Sundance in January. Also helming at least one episode this go-round is Colm McCarthy, who recently directed episodes of the BBC’s Doctor Who and Ripper Street. McCarthy tweeted: “It’s turning into a year of childhood dream fulfilment. #DoctorWho and now #Sherlock #dreamjobs #nopressure #whendoigetfoundout“. There’s no word yet on a third director.
Sherlock last aired in the UK in January 2012 and in the U.S. on PBS last May. It was originally due to begin filming Season 3 this past January, but the stars’ busy schedules delayed the start. Cumberbatch was in Germany shooting Wikileaks movie The Fifth Estate in January and Martin Freeman stars in The Hobbit trilogy in which Cumberbatch also stars. Two new episodes are understood to be filming ahead of a summer break to accomodate talent schedules and a third episode will shoot afterwards. The new trilogy will air in the winter. Sherlock is produced by Hartswood for the BBC. Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss are creators.

OH THANK GOD.
GOD EXISTS
I hope Cumberbatch has a lot of action scenes. He loves doing it so hope they accommodate him.
WAIT … three 90-minute episodes doth not a season or even a series make? Think House of Cards, Downton, egads….you just start getting into it, and poooof, it’s ended !!!!
But that’s what makes “Sherlock” so special! Yes, it’s hard to wait for the next season, especially now because it will take even longer for us to see Season 3, but the wait is so worth it. Each episode is such a gem. I don’t know if the high quality would be sustained if it were a “regular” 22-episode series.
agreed.
They’re 3 MOVIES 90 minute features. You can’t think of it like a weekly series. Believe me, I know it’s tough, I’m going wear out the DVDs before winter 2014 ever gets here.
It’s about damn time!
Finding out Elizabeth Hasselback was not leaving The View was a bummer, but this new more than makes up for it.
AMEN
LOL…I concur.
Great news to start off my Monday!
THANK THE LORD
sherlock is the most compelling tv for a generation, benedict cumberbatch is a beautiful man and martin freeman is genius. The sooner the better.
Finally, after many many months since the last episode, we will learn the answer!
Oh god yes. I CAN’T WAIT WE’VE BEEN WAITING SO LONG. SO LONG THAT IM SPAZZING OVER THE READ THROUGH!!!! Not even filming. The READ THROUGH. Only like 6 more months. Ish? Hopefully.
“The new trilogy will air in the winter.”
Define “will air”. Is that in the UK or in the US?
Define “winter”. Is that December 2013 winter or Jan/Feb 2014 winter?
Great. Now lets hope that PBS doesn’t wait five months to air it this time.
I. CANT. WAIT.
I may be in the minority of commentors here, but I know others who dislike ‘Sherlock’ as much as I. We aren’t as vocal as the fans of the homely no-talent Cumberbund Bandersnatch, but it’s our right to ignore this minor offering.
I don’t suppose the show’s any worse than a pledge night on PBS.
dude why are you even here
If you hate this program soooooo much, why are you even commenting?
@Shirley, Yes you are in a slight minority since this adaption of Sherlock has virtually universal acclaim.
If your not satisfied with it then I would love to know what shows you think are well made. In my opinion as with all shows Sherlock is not perfect, but it is the best adaption I have seen and Cumberbatch’s acting is only let down by how perfect is as Watson.
*how perfect Freeman is as Watson.
Well it’s about time!!! This has taken far too long already
SO GLAD TO HEAR THAT THIS WONDERFUL SHOW IS COMING BACK FOR A THIRD SEASON. THE BRITS DO IT SO WELL, MAKING GOOD TV !!!!
cumberbitches unite
ARGH!!! SOOO HAPPPY & SOOO SAD ONLY THREE EPISODES! I would be happy to start kick starter campaign for more episodes. IS THE BBC BROKE OR STUPID? Why only three episodes, and yes they are long but come on! Stop calling it a series!
Is there anyone out there like me who loved and adored the fantastic FIRST Season of Sherlock, but couldn’t stand the ridiculous, far-fetched, dumbdowned, Hollyweird Second Season to the point they wanted to puke with disappontment? Guess not, I’ve always had uniquely great taste; but hope springs eternally and I am hoping for a return of First Season-like quality in the Third Season. I also buy lottery tickets, so I AM an optimist. Still think Cumberbatch is the finest actor of his generation, though.
…….Please tell me this isn’t a serious comment.
i agree with you
XD I am chuffed to hear that the cast is reading for the first 2 episodes.
I hope that ‘summer break’ does not get delayed as well.
Oh and I like Benedict and Martin’s deerstalkers
This is fantastic news…..some of the best television to be served up to the American public via PBS. The Brits produce many quality programs and “Sherlock” is truly one of the best. This is scintillating entertainment with top-notch production standards, engaging writing and outstanding acting. Well worth the wait, and the news about two more “seasons” is well received. I only hope that there is a plausible explanation of Sherlock’s survival of his multi-story jump to end “season” 2. We’ll see.
Anyway (no, James May isn’t dead), looking forward to the start of season 3, whenever PBS gets around to airing it.
OMG FINALLY! <3 but the end of the year is sooo far away ): I don't know or I can wait that long D:
