EXCLUSIVE: Sony Pictures has acquired Jesse Holley, the working title for a film based on the unlikely rise the wide receiver who played for the Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots after getting an invite to Cowboys training camp
after winning 4th and Long, a reality series. The pic was sold in a pitch that will be written by Randy Brown, who scripted the Clint Eastwood-starrer Trouble With The Curve, and it will be produced by Neal Moritz and his Original Film banner. Dan Lindsay & TJ Martin, who won last year’s Oscar for Best Documentary for their gridiron film Undefeated are attached to make their narrative debut as directors.
Holley overcame a poverty-ridden upbringing and multiple personal obstacles and went from working as a security guard to being an NFL wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys. That gridiron career started in spectacular fashion when Holley caught a 77-yard pass in overtime, in his very first game. He was dragged down at the one-yard line. NFL Hall of Famer and Holley’s mentor Michael Irvin will be exec producer with Toby Ascher, and Elizabeth Buraglio will supervise for Original. Sony Pictures exec DeVon Franklin will oversee for the studio. Sports agent Steve Mandell helped put the deal together and will act as a creative consultant. The scribe is repped by UTA and attorney David Fox, the directors by WME, Principato-Young, and attorney Karl Austen.

Wasn’t a TD catch for the win. He was an idiot and held the ball in the air in ‘victory’ and was tackled at the one.

he was going to try an stretch the ball out for the goal line but wisely tucked it back in, as not to fumble it out of the end zone for a safety to give SF the win. Why would he raise the ball with a defender next to him for 15 yards? Look at the video again….
Pretty sure you are both missing the point about this story and Jesse’s plight to overcome so much.
But please, do continue to focus on that one minor detail.
Thanks, Nope. Well said.
Elizabeth Buraglio and Toby Ascher are a couple of the smartest young execs in this business. Kudos to them!
Congrats to Dan and TJ. I loved Undefeated and know this is going to be just as touching!
My friend DJ was the Casting Director who found him for the show and interviewed him!
There are some great stories in the reality world. He had mentioned his was great one, even though it was never portrayed on the show.
Hopefully the movie will show that part of Jesse’s story too as it the key turning point for him!
4th and Long was a great show, and to the guy who said he was tackled at the one. You are clearly missing the point.
Another great underdog story of someone who overcame a lot of obstacles.
My friend DJ was the one who cast him on the show, and I remember him telling after the show ended that Jesse is very deserving of this opportunity and had a great story that they never told on the show.
Hopefully the movie will showcase the reality angle, as that is essential to the story and there would be no Dallas Cowboys without it. Michael Irvin had nothing to do with any of the casting process and didn’t “find” any of the players. There was a team of Casting Directors who did that.
Nice to see another great story come from the reality world and can’t wait to see it on the big screen. Congrats to all involved.
Devon Frankln for Sony. So it must be religious faith base since its about a black man. Nothing original when it comes from Sony dealing with minorities. Imagine if Django was produced by Sony. Omg!!!!!
LOL.
I was one of the sound mixers on 4th and Long. He deserves everything he’s earned. Jesse Holly was a super cool cat.
They must really love football. Hopefully.
Pretty Cool…
Even though the runner up of the Show (who i think everyone agrees should have won) Andrew Hawkins, has the better story! and he still made it to the NFL and outshined Holley. Here in dallas we got a lousy 7 catches out of him..but thats hollywood for you…
Call me a cynic. Jesse Holley’s travails make a fine story — for a reality based boob tube series. For a blockbuster movie? Hmmm. Count me out. But I’m sure the poobahs behind this project will find a sympathetic narrative to bring it home… one about, say, a fly-over state Christian housewife who sees the latent talent in Jesse Holley and convinces her estranged husband ( a guy who has ties with the Dallas Cowboys organization) to give him a shot via a reality TV show even as their marriage is in tatters and they’re dealing with a 2-year-old daughter fighting a rare form of adrenal cancer even as one of her football loving relatives (a former Dallas Cowboy cheerleader no less!) is off in Iraq slaying the Taliban for love of God and the good ole U S of A. If all of THAT is going on — think “The Blind Side” and how Micheal Oher’s story took a backseat to the white adoptive family’s perspective — then the rest of the Holley story about a talented African American football player who overcame great odds to achieve an NFL dream might resonate with the movie-going public.
(All sarcasm aside, Dan Lindsay and TJ Martin are a pair of talented hombres, and their documentary was fantastic and deserving of Oscar glory. I’m just not so sure about this planned movie….)
Wait.. So Hawkins isnt a part of this story seriously?!?!?!?! JOKEE!!!!!!! Maybe you should do them a favor and forward this Sports Ilustrated article to Sony!

Good for Jesse but Andrew Hawkins should have won the show and he actuaally has a more compelling backstory as well.
lol I was goin to say the same thing! Hawkins should have won the show… and by all accounts his story is much better than Holleys(who does have an incredible story as well). Hell, even Mike Irvin overlooked him!! Somt better hope Hawkins doesnt start shopping his story or this is dead money.
I worked on the how too! And Jesse is an incredible guy! I agree the movie should be with both he and Hawk. Even jesseadmits Hawkis killin it in the league now!! Before the show Jesse was a security guard and Hawk was workin in a factory and part time as a caddie!!! It would be like Invincible and Rudy combined!!! Lol
Good for Jesse. He is an amazing person. He won 4th and Long not Hawk. Cowboys never really gave him a chance to shine but the few times they did play him he never let them down. Stop being to negative you must all be sad people..
