Somehow, another NBC late-night transition has turned into a public drama. And this time, the two hosts involved are not even feuding. The network has found itself in a groundswell of speculation surrounding The Tonight Show host Jay Leno and Late Night‘s Jimmy Fallon. The network is staying mum on its plans, but a few things appear settled: Fallon is poised to replace Leno on The Tonight Show. When he does, he is not expected to copy his predecessor Conan O’Brien’s cross-country move from New York to Los Angeles.
I hear Fallon and his producers had been lobbying for staying put in New York. Fallon’s current studio is being renovated, which sources say was part of a planned refurbishing of 30 Rock, and it will likely house the future Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, marking the show’s return to the East Coast after more than four decades in Burbank. Leno’s current contract, which is up in September 2014, will likely be late-night host’s last one. In an interview with GQ, Late Night executive producer Lorne Michaels also hinted at the inevitability of Fallon’s anointment as new Tonight host. “I’m not allowed to say it — yet,” he said. “But I think there’s an inevitability to it,” He added: “He’s the closest to Carson that I’ve seen of this generation.”
With the players and the framework set, the biggest uncertainty in the transition appears to be the exact timing. There is speculation that NBC brass may have settled on an end date for Leno and that Leno and Fallon, who regularly chat on the phone, have discussed the issue in a call initiated by Fallon — though all sides are denying that there is a plan in place. For now, sources at NBC indicate that the network has no plans to announce Leno’s Tonight exit at NBC’s upfront presentation in May, though the rampant speculation may force their hand in the decision-making. An announcement of Leno’s retirement is tied with the introduction of Fallon as new Tonight host, something he has not been contracted for yet. I hear NBC has not started or is in very early stages of making Fallon’s deal for The Tonight Show.
Additionally, NBC is expected to give a final-season send-off for Leno, who continues to deliver for the network. Despite NBC’s bad shape in primetime — finishing fifth in the February sweep among adults 18-49 — and the buzz surrounding ABC’s 11:35 PM newcomer Jimmy Kimmel, Leno won the sweep decisively in both 18-49 and total viewers. And despite a series of jabs at NBC’s woes by Leno on The Tonight Show that led to emails of disapproval from NBC topper Bob Greenblatt, the two appear to be on good terms and are reportedly dining together tomorrow night. Also needed for a Tonight transition is a replacement for Fallon. While I hear potential candidates have been pitched (Howard Stern also recently threw his name in the ring), NBC executives are not taking official meetings yet. Of course, there are the potential internal candidates that had long been rumored about, like Saturday Night Live‘s Seth Meyers, who would follow in the footsteps of Fallon, also a former Weekend Update host; or E!’s Chelsea Handler.
As for Fallon, he tries not to get wrapped up in all the speculation. “It would be great, sure, I guess,” he told GQ about hosting Tonight. “I’d love it, but it’s not on my mind.”

Leno is clearly long in the tooth, but Fallon is not the answer. He SUCKS! God, Lorne is so senile now, it’s disgusting.
Thank you for noting the emperors (Lorne… and Fallon) are wearing no clothes here. As others have noted re: the Carson comparison, it’s absolutely absurd! Carson’s special gift was the ability to ad-lib. Fallon hasn’t displayed this ability at all. He parrots back the pre-written material & has “fun” laughing at the guests without adding anything to the interchange. That does not a “new Carson” make.
Fallon’s whole show – especially the monologue – just feels awkward. What’s okay are the TV parodies and sketches, but that’s about it. Compared to Craig Ferguson though, Late Night just feels lifeless. I’m actually surprised that Fallon gets better ratings in the younger demos than Ferguson, I would have thought that The Late Late Show would attract lots of stoners and college kids.
Look at his guests. Fallon brings on a lot of notable people from the tech and internet media world that other mainstream shows won’t touch. In some ways it’s genius, but in others it’s simply a move to appeal to the younger demo because the producers know they certainly aren’t tuning in for Jimmy.
He was ok on SNL, but the man’s awkwardness is only matched by his lack of humor. I still cringe when I think about that subway bit he did with DeNiro on his first episode. I hope poor Bobby was three sheets to the wind because that skit was a career low if I’ve ever seen one.
I agree. If you’re going to replace Leno, at least replace him with someone better. But then again, we’re talking about NBC. The same NBC that is now in fifth place behind Univision.
NBC is NOT in fifth place to Univision. They were in fifth place in during the February sweeps. There’s a difference. NBC is currently fighting for second place with FOX.
Your ageism is lame and dated, but your SUCK meter is accurate.
NBC IS IN THE TOILET. The ratings for their Primetime schedule is at Nightly Historic lows. This effects affiliates 11:00 News and this in turn hurts “The Tonight Show” and “Today”
NBC needs to let go of LOW BROW LOW BUDGET shows like The “Biggest Loser”.
I think NBC NEWS should be able to do 1 hour a week for PRIME TIME. I would love it if NBC would do a “This Week in History”. Since Network News has been around for over 50 year that have historic footage from every major event in the last 50+ years.
In November it will be 50 years since the Kennedy Assassination. Maybe NBC NEWS could do a weekly special about each weeks events let leading up to “Dallas”
You are too forward thinking and creative to be commenting on an internet news article. NBC should be listening to pitches like this! I wish people cared more about history, and I love this idea.
NBC News does have an hour in primetime every week. In fact, there are several hours. Dateline NBC and Rock Center with Brian Williams.
WRT to JFK’s assassination, 50 years ago? Do you think that there’s any who cares anymore? The people (like me) who were alive back then know it’s been done to death. Those who weren’t don’t give a rap. It’s like ancient history. Like rehashing the assassination of McKinley or someone like that.
“He’s the closest to Carson that I’ve seen of this generation.”
That’s so very very sad. Poor Lorne. He’s lost his marbles. He used to be on the cutting edge.
The Professor
He is nothing like Carson. His response to every guest answer is repeating what they say, laughing, or going “No Way!” There’s no banter, he’s just feedback.
Michaels comparison of Fallon to Carson also has two subtle undertones. One, he is implying he had something to do with Carson, which is not true. Two, he’s still pissed Conan didn’t take him onboard when Conan went to The Tonight Show.
Wait, was he talking about Johnny Carson, or Carson Daily?
The fact that Michaels’ name is on something as insignificant as Portlandia tells you how much he’s lost his edge. Hey, why not give Fred Armisten the post Fallon shot? Anyway, Kimmel will only get stronger, especially with exclusive access to the LA guest pool.
good call on Kimmel being the only broadcast late night show in LA…certainly an asset…NBC will probably shift Late Night to LA
Hey, “Portlandia” is more consistently funny than SNL!
Lorne Michaels is a producer of Portlandia.
once again, nbc finds a way to ruin a franchise. way to go, NBC!
Exactly. Fallon is the antithesis of Johnny Carson – and moving Johnny’s Tonight Show back to New York will only make it look worse. But there has been reports of Mayor Bloomberg promising NBC execs everything under the sun if they moved the show back.
Watch it die slowly.
Back? When was it ever in New York?
Before Johnny took it to L.A. in the early ’70s.
Jimmy will be great on the Tonight Show. Late Night is so refreshing compared to the same old Carson copies that are hosting on NBC and CBS now. It seems like NBC recognizes that Jimmy is the next generation in late night TV and they are smart to take a chance on him instead going for the same played out formula.
The smartest thing NBC could do at this point is announce Jay’s retirement. The ratings will get a bump from people wanting to catch him while they still can.
I completely agree with you. I would rather stay up later to watch Late Night rather than watch two aging comedians keep with the same old boring things they’ve been doing for the past twenty years.
We seem to be in the minority here but I also realize that folks love to find any opportunity they can to hop on the NBC bashing train. I look forward to seeing what things are in store over there because I would follow Jimmy anywhere. He gets my generation and I like it that way.
Oh please, your comment smells like a plant. The “he gets my generation” and “I would follow Jimmy anywhere” are a bit much.
Absolutely!
Exactly!!! Jimmy is sooo boring and just a yes man ..He spends virtually No time on monologue anymore..Jay is way funnier
Chelsea Handler gets higher ratings than Fallon. Why would she give that up? Though she is locked into E! Till 2014, Comcast just gave her a shiny new stage and she can get away with more on cable than she ever could on network.
She may get more hype, but not more ratings.
Carter’s article today left out a critical component: The young audience has already left for Adult Swim and Netflix. Family Guy reruns rate better than these stale late-night shows. Kimmel isn’t exactly blossoming in the ratings and those young ones who do watch him only watch his skits..online.
Chelsea Handler is also extremely unlikable. She says ignorant things such as how she’s annoyed with minorities like Asians and Eastern Europeans like Russians and Serbians. As a consequence, she’s not going to be able to command a wider audience necessary for a more competitive gig. After all, her show on NBC was canceled for poor ratings…
Biased maybe, but ignorant? Please. I can’t stand sushi, but that doesn’t mean I’m “ignorant.”
That’s what she told Newsweek in January 2011. I guess making stupid comments about hating entire ethnic groups, nationalities, and races is all right according to “some” people… Careful now, your ignorance is showing!
No, NervisRex, not liking sushi doesn’t make you ignorant. Using that as an analogy for disliking other races? THAT makes you ignorant.
Bless u and your statement
Fallon is far superior to Kimmell. Fallon talks to and relates to his guests very well. Kimmell not a great interviewer. Leno has done a great job. New York is an exciting change for the Tonight Show. Give Seth Meyers the 12:35 slot and move him to Los Angeles.
That’s a solid idea.
Meyers would be great.
Was agreeing with you all the way until the suggestion of Seth Meyers. Just have never found him funny.
Not that they would or not that he’d take it, but I’d be curious enough to watch if they gave “Late Night” to Neil Patrick Harris.
Neil is a very interesting prospect and would do an awesome job, but he also has a family and after HIMYM ends the last thing he’d want to do is get into another lengthy TV deal.
I just randomly thought of Kevin Hart as a prospect. I’d watch that show every damn night if he hosted.
Fallon sucks, but SNL must have some dirt on NBC, because man, they cannot get rid of the ridiculous influence it has on that channel. Fallon will bomb as late-night host. He is atrocious.
Does anyone even watch Late Night shows anyways? People that have jobs?
Fallon is already a late night host, and does pretty well. i don’t even like him that much but he does a good job.
And yes people do, especially those ever so important 18-30 somethings who like to see their favorite bands, comedians and actors on TV.
If this is true (we have no official confirmation from NBC yet) I hope NBC learned their lesson.
If Fallon gets the show he’s most-likely going to fall in numbers for a bit. It takes time for older viewers to make a change and for younger viewers to start watching earlier.
I think Fallon has a better connection with younger viewers than O’Brien did. Fallon’s funnier in the “Mainstream” sort of way and is kind of infectious with really seeming to enjoy guests and the conversations they have.
Is he Carson? – No. No one ever will be. And, more importantly, the young viewers who matter don’t have any idea about Carson today.
That was a far different time.
But I think Fallon can grow in that area.
If it IS true, NBC, give the guy 18 months to see what happens.
10 years from now we all find out that Fallon is an evil genius and he was secretly behind the Leno/Conan conflict so he could eventually get the Tonight Show… That’s right. He’s playing the long con.
Stern did not “throw his name in the ring.” The NY Post did. He mocked even the idea of going to a 12:35am time slot. He called it insulting.
Turns out Last Call with Carson Daily is still on.
It boggles me to no end why they would want to get rid of the only number one show on the fifth place network? NBC has got bigger problems and do they just have amnesia of the publicity nightmare they just had, even the today show debacle which decisively placed the today show a distant second. Guess what NBC, we love Leno– the ratings show it despite its terrible lead ins.
The answer is simple, and Leno said it months ago: NBC only cancels you if you’re number one.
Jimmy Fallon is adequate but when the dust settles it will be Jimmy Kimmell who will be wearing the late night crown. There’s an effortlessness and edge to Kimmel that Fallon just doesn’t have. If NBC were smart they would snatch Kimmel away from The Mouse and quick.
Fallon is not getting Leno’s slot unless Leno 100% wants to retire now.
Leno is number one and old people still like him so why would he retire now? Fallon is a fool if he thinks he is getting the tonight show in 2014. You just wait and see, Leno will be hosting for at least another 10 years.
You must not read much, shill.
Fallon gets Leno’s spot if NBC says so. When Leno’s contract is up, Leno can get the boot. Leno is likely far more expensive than Fallon. While I despise both hosts, why pay more when you can do almost as well in the ratings for far less money?
sorry…..i agree, fallon probably costs less than leno, but he will get nowhere the ratings that leno gets. He’s like Conan, not tonight show material, and ratings will plummet.
I think NBC is handling this great and being flexible with Jimmy in New York. Late Night definitely has the strongest grip on terms of digital fads and trends (Friday performed by Stephen Colbert, for example) which helps Jimmy out a lot when he needs to build an audience for Tonight.
As much as I like him, I really can’t imagine Seth though as the host of a late night program. He’s perfect for Update, but I don’t think he has the edge to keep a talk show entertaining every night. Plus after being in the SNL pressure cooker for 10+ years, he might just want to focus on other film/tv things like most SNL alum. Chelsea would be interesting, but I think relocating the show to her or her to NY wouldn’t be worth the hassle, especially seeing how she’s perfect right where she is.
John Mulaney to take over for Fallon!!! Or Pete Holmes if his tbs show doesn’t go far!!
Jay was funny once. Once. Fallon, nonce.
Leno is beating Kimmel in total viewers and 18-49 yet he’s still being humiliated, forced out? Why? Because Fallon ‘might’ leave?!
If Fallon is so good, why is he also going to be on Bravo emulating digital tier hell Esquire network.
That comment Michaels made “he’s the closest to Carson” made me laugh. I suppose the same type of comment could be made regarding Nbc-they’re the closest to being a real network, but, not close enough. Noone will ever replace Johnny.Fallon does nothing for me.Johnny had an natural quality about him.He had such a wonderful way of relating to his guests.Johnny had that certain something. To me,Leno has never had that.Fallon is a tad better than Leno, but, still neither is in the same league as Johnny was…
Karma is a bitch… and she’s furiously knocking at Jay’s door right now.
Leno should’ve retired years ago. He’s damaged goods, everybody knows it. He’s making a fool of himself taking swipes at his corporate masters in a desperate attempt to appeal to the rebellious youngsters who love Conan (remember him? lol). It’s not working, Jay. Have you no shame left?
Fallon is a lucky guy. Not very talented but likeable enough; with an uncanny knack for kissing the right ass at the right time. You gotta love Hollywood!
“the rebellious youngsters who love Conan” lol, well they certainly didn’t follow his show, because it’s failing miserably
Jay has and is delivering ratings. None of the others have been able to.
We watch Conan all the time on our computers. You Dinosaurs haven’t figured out how to track that yet.
Think of all you’ll be missing, you won’t have Leno to kick around anymore. Next will be when will Letterman retire and who’ll replace him?
No, next will be… who will replace Fallon when he tanks.
Doesn’t NBC have a responsibility to shareholders to keep Leno? How can a public company, using public airwaves, play out their personal whims so irresponsibly?
No, it has a responsibility to get rid of Leno. Hatred of Leno has hurt NBC’s primetime ratings but those still upset at the way things were handled in 2012.
That is utter crap. Enough of this tired crap from the kook gallery already.
Leno has hurt NBC’s ratings??? I would think that the garbage primetime lineup is what hurt thier ratings.
I haven’t conducted a poll, but I am a lot more likely to give a new show on CBS or ABC a shot because of my lingering anger at NBC over Conan gate. I’m sure there are many others.
To compare any of these marginal talents to Johnny Carson is a joke.
This is a great move. I think a lot of younger viewers still see NBC as the network that screwed over Conan, and Jay Leno was one of the main reasons for that. Fallon started off shaky for a few years, but the show has improved massively in all aspects. Fallon would be the youngest host in that timeslot and I think he’d crush in the key demos. Another thing worth looking at is that both Letterman and Conan’s contracts are also up in the latter half of 2014 so there could be a major shakeup in the Late Night game.
I am just over 50 and I LOVE Fallon. He is a lot like Johnny Carson. Not the older Carson we remember, but if you have a chance to watch early tapes of Carson when he began hosting Tonight in his 30s, he was charming, funny, a little awkward, not near as confident as the older Carson, already a skilled interviewer…a lot like Fallon now. (Although jimmy is a superior musician and dancer.)
Jimmy Fallon will do just fine. But jimmy, please, please, do not talk to Leno regularly on the phone. He is undoubtedly trying to glean information to use against you. If you tell Jay anything you ever did that was not completely on the up and up (we all have) he will notify NBC brass as soon as you get off the phone. Oh, And don’t let Gavin do your deal.
Why does NBC act like Lorne Michaels is God? I don’t get it. SNL sucks, and sure enough, he always inserts himself into almost every episode. This leads to my point: why does the network always have to think they have to bring in the “next” host from that show? NBC used to be great, and they have now sucked for so long, even new ownership can’t stop it. Ditch Matt Lauer and Lorne Michaels, and maybe everything else will even out.
The NBC executives are complete idiots! Why would put an end to one of the few successes you have?! If it ain’t broke..don’t fix it! Haven’t they learned their lesson from before?! Unless Jay Leno has said he wants to retire this is a dumb move!
