Somehow, another NBC late-night transition has turned into a public drama. And this time, the two hosts involved are not even feuding. The network has found itself in a groundswell of speculation surrounding The Tonight Show host Jay Leno and Late Night‘s Jimmy Fallon. The network is staying mum on its plans, but a few things appear settled: Fallon is poised to replace Leno on The Tonight Show. When he does, he is not expected to copy his predecessor Conan O’Brien’s cross-country move from New York to Los Angeles.
I hear Fallon and his producers had been lobbying for staying put in New York. Fallon’s current studio is being renovated, which sources say was part of a planned refurbishing of 30 Rock, and it will likely house the future Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, marking the show’s return to the East Coast after more than four decades in Burbank. Leno’s current contract, which is up in September 2014, will likely be late-night host’s last one. In an interview with GQ, Late Night executive producer Lorne Michaels also hinted at the inevitability of Fallon’s anointment as new Tonight host. “I’m not allowed to say it — yet,” he said. “But I think there’s an inevitability to it,” He added: “He’s the closest to Carson that I’ve seen of this generation.”
With the players and the framework set, the biggest uncertainty in the transition appears to be the exact timing. There is speculation that NBC brass may have settled on an end date for Leno and that Leno and Fallon, who regularly chat on the phone, have discussed the issue in a call initiated by Fallon — though all sides are denying that there is a plan in place. For now, sources at NBC indicate that the network has no plans to announce Leno’s Tonight exit at NBC’s upfront presentation in May, though the rampant speculation may force their hand in the decision-making. An announcement of Leno’s retirement is tied with the introduction of Fallon as new Tonight host, something he has not been contracted for yet. I hear NBC has not started or is in very early stages of making Fallon’s deal for The Tonight Show.
Additionally, NBC is expected to give a final-season send-off for Leno, who continues to deliver for the network. Despite NBC’s bad shape in primetime — finishing fifth in the February sweep among adults 18-49 — and the buzz surrounding ABC’s 11:35 PM newcomer Jimmy Kimmel, Leno won the sweep decisively in both 18-49 and total viewers. And despite a series of jabs at NBC’s woes by Leno on The Tonight Show that led to emails of disapproval from NBC topper Bob Greenblatt, the two appear to be on good terms and are reportedly dining together tomorrow night. Also needed for a Tonight transition is a replacement for Fallon. While I hear potential candidates have been pitched (Howard Stern also recently threw his name in the ring), NBC executives are not taking official meetings yet. Of course, there are the potential internal candidates that had long been rumored about, like Saturday Night Live‘s Seth Meyers, who would follow in the footsteps of Fallon, also a former Weekend Update host; or E!’s Chelsea Handler.
As for Fallon, he tries not to get wrapped up in all the speculation. “It would be great, sure, I guess,” he told GQ about hosting Tonight. “I’d love it, but it’s not on my mind.”

Remember all those who got so wrought up about Conan? Where is he now? Does anyone watch that show? The same could happen to Fallon. A better choice than Conan. Conan’s talented but his ironic style was all wrong for Tonight. The Tonight Show is a relic that still works. But for how long?
Sad to see Jay go, but I love Jimmy Fallon as well! He’ll be great. And keep it in NY for sure!
Chelsea Handler would be perfect for the “Late Night” crowd, but cable is where she belongs! She would have to “tone down” her humor for network and that wouldn’t be fair, nor would she agree to it.
No.
This is all that needs to be said.
Been here, seen this. History shows that the combination of Leno’s ego and NBC’s epic mismanagement of late night that we’re in for yet another drawn out soap opera. This, like the two previous iterations (Letterman/O’Brien), will be nothing but a clusterf***.
Closest to Carson? Yeah, that guy is still on the air: Letterman. Even Carson thought so, pushing for Letterman to take over when he retired( ignored by the NBC pinheads). The rest are pretenders to the throne.
I love the hypocrisy of the Leno shills asking how NBC can fire someone who’s on top in the ratings. In 1991 Johnny Carson’s ratings were about triple Jay’s ratings today and nobody was even close to him, when, per numerous accounts, Jay’s manager (and probably Jay himself) had Johnny forced out. So shut up Leno shills.
Truth Hurts aka conan
so then conan forced jay out? lol
NBC has already screwed this up they are denying what they are doing in official statements then leaking confirmation they are doing it to Bill Carter and other outlets. They are so inept it’s comical how stupid they are. Leno will hang on to the very end then he’ll get a syndicated late night show that will air at 11 pm it’s all he knows how to do. CBS should sign up Conan to replace Letterman. Conan would take that deal in a minute and TBS won’t be able to keep him. Hopefully this will happen if it does Conan will win he’ll have Dave’s viewers plus many new ones.
Fallon is the closest thing to Carson? He couldn’t have said that with a straight face. Aside from that idiocy, it’s hard to see Fallon as Tonight Show host…I think he’s well suited where he is.
NBC just never learns. Here’s a quote from an article about March ’13 ratings…
“Jay has now delivered bigger 18-49 audiences than “Late Show” for the last 16 weeks in a row and topped “Kimmel” for seven of their nine head-to-head weeks. In total viewers, Jay has out-delivered “Late Show” for 20 weeks in a row and “Kimmel” for nine of nine weeks.”
Love or hate Jay, NBC should STFU, leave their only success alone and let him decide when to retire.
Hopefully,my buddy Craig will beat the snot out of whoever takes over in Fallon’s current spot•••if any of this Leno retiring/Fallon taking over stuff actually happens…
You said it Geoff! The BEST late night show is Craig without a doubt. Honestly, he is closer to Carson’s style of improv and comedy than any other late night show. Add in he is warm and generous to his guests. It’s a new era and Craig is the best late night host on TV, hands down. Let them move the show to NY, just makes Craig shine all that much more.
Once again everyone seems to be missing the point. One commenter came close noting that they can get Fallon or anyone else for less money than Leno. And that’s the key here–the new Comcast management has a cable company mentality. They don’t care about what the content is or who hosts the Tonight show, its just about maximizing profit by charging the most while paying the least for it. So Leno will be gone unless he’s willing to take another big salary cut.
In Leno’s defense, he does have a point when he says why should he retire when he’s first in the ratings, even in the 18-49 demo. So he should be left alone. He’s still younger than Carson was when he retired.
As far as replacements for Late Night, if they’re going to draw from the SNL pool, they should at least consider Taran Killam, who has a much higher likeability factor than the others.
moving the show to NY will just crown Kimmel king of late night, without any effort. That’s absolutely ridiculous. Like someone previously posted, the large pool of stars is in LA, like it or not.
I wish Jay would just leave, go somewhere else and show nbc his audience will follow him. I think he will be #1 on any network.
After the Ann Curry fiasco which has almost brought down Matt Lauer & the Today show, nbc should carefully think its steps
Well Put, Commenter “Anonymous.” Jay #1.
Just another nail in the coffin for THE TONIGHT SHOW. Leno tarnished it forever, and Fallon is just plain unwatchable and dull. If Fallon does take over the show, it’s THE TONIGHT SHOW in name only, since Fallon cannot hold a candle to the Carson legacy. I haven’t watched Leno since his return, he is long in the tooth and not funny. What a hole NBC dug with THE TONIGHT SHOW and should this come to pass [Fallon as host], it’s only a matter of time before the show will be relic from a bygone era. Time to say goodnight to THE TONIGHT SHOW. Also, Leno’s only ratings grace is that he holds on to the geriatric demo, and once he leaves I highly doubt that generation will watch Fallon.
Jay actually wins the 18-49 demo as well.
I’m guessing that NBC could pay Jon Stewart a whole lot more than he is paid by Comedy Central. And talk about having a built in young audience. I don’t know if they want him and I don’t know if he would do it. But he would be a better Tonight Show host than every damn Jay, Jimmy, Conan, Craig, etc. that anyone can name.
My 2 Cents,
I’m not sure he’d do it but your point’s solid.
Stewart would be awesome.
People have gotten so hung up on the “heir to the throne” thing re: LATE NIGHT and THE TONIGHT SHOW.
Truth be told, it’s about keeping the show watchable. And Stewart would do that very well. Who cares who’s on next?
But giving up creative control to NBC would probably be too much to deal with. If NBC would grant him and his team total control I think it’d be the shot in the arm THE TONIGHT SHOW needs.
But NBC (and viewers) might not agree.
Don’t know about Seth Myers replacing Fallon. How about Tina Fey, with 30 Rock ending?
NY will kill the vibe of the show.
My vote is Late Night with Joel McHale. The Man can talk, good looking and has the sharpest wit.
In complete agreement about Tina Fey. Not a stand-up but up to the task in every way. The ability to ad-lib, be a gifted conversationalist – equal measures intelligent, bright, curious, witty, silly. That was Carson. But why would she wanna give up the great acting career? Although I gotta say – her husband might not be a bad band leader for Fallon – very Doc/Carson in spirit. Miss the “30 Rock” score already.
I live in Philadelphia. In out tv market channel six, WPVI has been number one forever. A few Months ago, I asked the 6 and 11 anchor Jim Gardener why the show was number one after all these years. His response is that habits our formed early. The first cigarette brand you smoked, the first beer you drank, the first car you drove. He said you have an affinity for these things all your life. He said the spend a fair amount of money on the show, but he things it is because people see the same faces every night, staff at wpvi is measured in decades.
My view is late night has not been interesting since Carson. I see how it is important to ratings. When you turn on your TV in the morning it is at the same station you left it on last night.
Has NBC not learned anything over the last twenty odd years since Carson? Every time they played with The Tonight Show, a show that is VERY profitable they screwed it up. To me this is another case of TV executives having contempt for the talent. What ever you can say about Leno, he is very good at schmoozing affiliates, and advertisers. He is number one in over all numbers, and often number one in the demo. My guess is that older viewers actually watch commercials and dont text or check the mac, or the twitter, or used their Ipad during commercials. Why is NBC screwing up a great thing financially?
Jon Stewart and Seth Meyers are the wild cards when you shake up the late night box generally. But the extent to which Carson is intoned in these discussions can’t be good for late night trying to move forward a little bit. Part of Kimmel’s appeal. Seems less encumbered by that yoke of reflex comparison. And Carson was in a completely different media universe that just does not exist today. Plus he will never be duplicated as much as everyone would like to believe otherwise.
Fallon is just not a good fit to take on this role with a lot that will be expected of him should and if he gets this job. He’s still struggling at times with his current show and his interviewing style and that needs bigtime improvements in the process. Please don’t consider Handler or Stern as an option as they can do MUCH better when finding a possible replacement for Fallon. They’ll announce Leno’s departure at either these upfronts or in the summer media press tour in July.
Agreed. That’s why Letterman is so great. As much as he loved Carson he did it his way. He came up with his own specs. Very appealing in the short-run and in the long-run once you get some traction going. Also will never be duplicated.
I know it’s cool and all to bash Leno, but the fact remains that No one can come close to him in late night. Letterman stopped caring 15 years ago, the Top 10 list hasn’t been funny in 20 years, and Kimmel just isn’t funny. Leno will be on FOX the first day he can. I would not be surprised if he has already agreed to a deal framework with them.
Tina Fey would be a great choice. I see Jimmy getting backlash from Leno’s audience, just like the Lauer/Today show blowback. I think Tina Fey is one of the few people who wouldnt get blamed for Jay leaving
Only Jerry Seinfeld can restore the Tonight Show to its former glory. Surprised his name never gets mentioned.
