EXCLUSIVE: Spring Breakers helmer Harmony Korine, on the verge of having his first breakout hit after a most eclectic career, has made a deal for his next film to be produced by John Lesher’s Le Grisbi Productions and DCM Productions. Spring Breakers will open wide this week through A24 after garnering a huge per-screen average in limited release, starring James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and the director’s wife, Rachel Korine.
The title and log line of the new film are under wraps, but I’ve heard it involves a multi-generational family of criminals in the South. Spring Breakers producer Charles-Marie Anthonioz will also produce the film. This is likely to be Korine’s next directorial effort, but he is also developing projects with Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures; she bought Spring Breakers at Toronto last fall. Korine’s new jail-bait sex kittenesque heist film seems to finally have delivered on the commercial promise he showed with his early breakout film, Kids. Some of his follow-ups, including Trash Humpers, you could imagine David Lynch watching and going, “What the hell? This is really out there.” Lesher has long been a Korine supporter; he was his agent for many years at UTA and then Endeavor, before he took the top job at Paramount and then became a producer.
Lesher most recently produced End Of Watch, and he also produced Blood Ties, the English-language debut of Guillaume Canet that stars Clive Owen, Marion Cotillard, Billy Crudup, Mila Kunis and James Caan. Lesher’s about to begin production in New York on the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu-directed dark comedy Birdman with Michael Keaton, Ed Norton, Emma Stone, Zach Galifianakis, and Naomi Watts, and Black Mass, the Barry Levinson-directed crime thriller that will star Johnny Deep as Boston crime kingpin Whitey Bulger.
Berlin-based production/distribution company DCM’s production division is run by Marc Schmidheiny and Christoph Daniel. They co-financed and produced the Dustin Hoffman-directed Quartet and the Oscar-nominated Norwegian film Kon-Tiki. CAA reps Korine.

I saw Spring Breakers this past weekend and it was the most awful piece of crap movie I’ve ever seen. They shot about 30 minutes of footage and just kept reusing the same shots and dialogue 3 or more times to fill it out to feature length. Films like this are what make people claim that the media, films and television are the cause of the downfall of society, and the exact opposite type of media that made me want to be in the entertainment industry. It kills me that films like this can get funding while so many amazing scripts get passed over. Awful.
I couldn’t disagree more. Sure, it was a completely bizarro moviegoing experience, but those 97 minutes flew by. I would rather see 10 Spring Breakers (flaws and all) then any of the other safe crap overflowing in the marketplace — Oz, Jack the Giant, Burt, The Call, Safe Haven, etc etc etc.
And in this day and age, it’s great to see a polarizing movie. Films nowadays usually get an overwhelming, “Meh.” Save for the fall Oscar contenders…(albeit even some of them too.)
The only thing good about Springbreakers was the marketing campaign. It is the 2nd worst movie I’ve seen in many years (after Movie 43)
“a multi-generational family of criminals in the South” ie. The Wonderful Whites of West Virginia THE MOVIE
Great documentary
Korine just seems like a dirty old man now. Too bad. He showed promise for a while there, not with Trash Humpers but with GUMMO.
I disagree. He’s never showed promise. He exploits, laughs at not with and makes idiots out of his actors, his non-actors and his audience . He won’t go away so I guess we can just put him on ignore and laugh as he exploits those who stand behind him. It’s not worth caring.
Well said
“Korine’s new jail-bait sex kittenesque heist film seems to finally have delivered on the commercial promise.” Of course, because that’s the status of women in today’s world and porn rules right now. MISSRESPRESENTATION
wait, someone actually wrote a script for spring breakers?
Spring Breakers is F’ing amazing. Harmony Korine has made something that Hollywood has never seen before. He has access to people that Hollywood people can only DREAM of having. Those extras? Gucci Mane? The movie is a work of art that Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens fans are going to see and have their minds totally freakin blown off and not necessarily in a good way. And that’s a good thing. It’s a GREAT thing. Spring Breakers is, in this order: Beautiful, scary, silly, and unpredictable. There is no other filmaker like him in the world and what an amazing thing that we get to experience something NEW and WEIRD. Sure, it’s not D’Jango– that’s fine. There is room in Hollywood for art and weird and wonderful and scary and uncomfortable, and Harmony Korine has proven that.
So all of you Deadline readers who love being normal, don’t forget that in his time, people though Van Gogh was awful. And now you have a framed poster of “The Starry Night” hanging in your living room over your flat screen where you get to judge and absorb and critique art and not do anything brave at all.
Harmony Korine being compared to Van Gogh is the best yet
yeah, light up another one there Barf. “he has access to people that Hollywood people can only dream of having’? are you serious? That is quite possibly one of the stupidest comments I’ve ever read. This “film” was a jumble or mixed up footage, repeated over and over, terrible dialogue, and no real story to speak of. People who call films like this “art” are delusional. And if this is something that Hollywood people haven’t seen before, i hope it is something that THIS Hollywood person never has to see again. If you like pointless, way over the top, unbelievable, violence, drugs, sex, and sheer stupidity that just dumbs down the idiots who think that this shit is good, then yes, you will enjoy this hideous work of “art”.
The negative reviews (a category most fall into) have been hysterical, far more entertaining than the movie itself.
My personal favorite being Egotastic!’s first line, “I just Dub-stepped into a big pile of sh-t by seeing ‘Spring Breakers.’”
I’m glad this did well in limited release, because it is going to get slaughtered when it goes wide. Probably going to torrent like crazy when the pirates get a hold of a decent copy though.
“The negative reviews (a category most fall into)…”
Currently 67% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. 33 positive, 16 negative.
Yeah! It’s so awesome when other people fail! I can’t wait until this movie goes wide and gets slaughtered, it will make me feel sooooooooooo much better about my shitty career!!!!!!
It’s pretty clear from his work that Korine just hates people. His movies are filled with grotesque, despicable cartoons that I guess make him feel better about his own empty existence. No thanks.
“…seems to finally have delivered on the commercial promise he showed with his early breakout film, Kids.”
Harmony Korine didn’t direct “Kids.” He’s one of three writers credited on it. I don’t think that’s enough to call it “his” breakout film.
spring breakers was one of the most fun and hilarious movie experiences ive been to in a long time. i feel sorry for some of you film industry movie nerds who cant enjoy a weird, beautiful, hypnotic experimental art film.
i totally disagree with comment above saying Korine hates people. i think he actually is one of the most sympathetic and non judgemental filmmakers out there.
so much cyncism and haters on this site. its all just enterainment.
There was nothing remotely entertaining about that pile of repetitive crap. The only good thing to come out of this film was that it created jobs for the people who worked on it. I bet even they know what crap they turned out, but took their paychecks and moved on.
