BREAKING: The release date of the Steve Jobs biopic that stars Ashton Kutcher has quietly been postponed. jOBS, which closed the Sundance Film Festival this year, had been set by Five Star Films and its distributor Open Road for April 19. It has moved off that date, and a new date has not been determined. Five Star made a service release deal with Open Road before the festival started, and the film’s backers were eager to release on the month marks the 37th anniversary of Jobs founding Apple. They’ve found instead that there wasn’t enough time to prepare for a proper release and create buzz for the film. The pic, directed by Joshua Michael Stern and written by Matthew Whiteley, details the major moments and defining characters that influenced Jobs covering the years 1971-2001.
Here is a trailer for the film:

My god, Kutcher is a horrible actor. It’s like an SNL sketch.
I read his most recent GQ or Esquire profile. He made a big point of how he knows which of his films are “dogshit,” and which are good. Because he has people around him that tell him the truth.
Ashton, all of your movies have been bad. THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT was half-decent, but you’re not good at what you do for a living. In fact, you’re one of the worst in the country at your profession. Maybe stick with the investing and the tech world, because you have zero chops.
“They’ve found instead that there wasn’t enough time to prepare for a proper release and create buzz for the film.”
Read: It sucks and they don’t want to put in the P&A for a film that’s going to tank theatrically and belongs on VOD, which is where it will probably end up… quietly.
I love how people who have absolutely no knowledge of a situation become experts on it in a negative way in about a second. You are so wrong on all counts. Film got 3 standing ovations at Sundance and a man who worked with Steve Jobs at Atari said that Ashton absolutely nailed Steve Jobs and was amazing so give the Ashton and the movie a break. See it and then you can say what you want
I know this producer. He has no film background. Just a newbie who came upon some cash. He runs a real estate magazine in Dallas. And he produced a local play with Dick Van Dyke. That’s his big entertainment background. The Van Dyke brothers in a Neil Simon play. Thought he would make a killing if he made a Steve Jobs movie before Sony’s biopic. He would go through the Walter Isaacson book pulling references for his movie. Like the story of Jobs anonymously meeting his runaway father who managed the deli. I didn’t know you could take copyrighted material when it was already licensed to Sony.
I think he knows the film sucks and he’s going to take a bath.
Whenever they postpone a film, it’s the death bell. No amount of cutting or post production will change the direction of the drain. Circling downward.
Too bad. Now I’m looking forward to Aaron Sorkin’s “Jobs” biopic.
So what if this is the producers first film. The fact is, he raised he money and made it , which anyone in this business knows is a major accomplishment. As for Kutcher: no he’s not Daniel Day Lewis, but he’s putting his best efforts out and honestly I think that scene worked enough that I’m interested to see more. People are being to hard on this little film.
I actually agree with you. I was kind of surprised how not so terrible that scene was. It did make me want to see more. That probably is more due to the content than the acting, but at least I wasn’t so turned off by the acting that the story no longer interested me. So, a “meh”?
I have no issues with first time producers who ‘seriously’ want to break into this business and want to make quality films. However this guy that you’re talking about seems not to know what ‘quality’ truly is. Look at Megan Ellison and what she’s doing. Virtually the same thing; rich and wants to make movies. And she’s doing that.
And using first time writers and directors; why not? Everyone has to start somewhere. Maybe they had a real passion for the project. Then again, maybe not.
Regardless, I do agree that it looks like crap. Kutcher’s fine for shows like Punk’d, or rom-com’s, be he needs to stay away from serious stuff. The TNT TV movie ‘Pirates of Silicon Valley’ is a fantastic movie about Jobs, Apple, Microsoft and Bill Gates. Noah Wyle’s performance as Jobs was outstanding, and I would love to see the Sorkin/Sony biopic use him again.
Okay, this might be a real stretch and even a bit of harsh request, but couldn’t Open Road just seriously consider put “jOBS” into TURNAROUND (I know it’s crazy, it’s already PRODUCED!) — I just can’t take the thought of seeing Ashton Kutcher acting like he might be some kind of “wunderkind” genius!
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve liked Kutcher in more recent roles (on his mental level) like “What Happens in Vegas,” but he is CLEARLY out of his league in trying to portray the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of Steven Jobs. Please, how about Jaquin Phoenix or Brad Pitt — not Ashton Kutcher, please! ;-D
Brad Pitt is not a great actor.
Then the folks at Rotten Tomatoes will just have to wait.
This looks like a crappy remake of “Pirates of Silicon Valley”
The film was dead the second they cast Kutcher.
They’ve found instead that there wasn’t enough time to prepare for a proper release and create buzz for the film.
Because when I think “create buzz,” I think Ashton Kutcher.
They also apparently didn’t have time to adequately prepare Josh Gad’s fake beard. Looks that thing HURTS when he talks.
This movie looks like garbage made by the latest sucker to plunk down money in Hollywood with zero experience.
The producer had an ad up on craigslist for the director position on this film. I had a phone call with them based off that ad. Then Kutcher and the agency got one of their guys in to direct…naturally.
LOL! you’re right! The producer did have an ad on the Dallas Craigslist for a director. hahaha
Yeah. That sounds like someone with a passion for making quality films. (Please. This guy just wanted to make a quick buck. He had bunch of people working on a crock pot cookbook in the next room because he thought he would make killing on that.)
Looks to me the shark got out sharked by Kutcher’s agent. I’m sure they got 3 mil up front in a cashier check. Fact I think the real money behind this is a Fort Worth millionaire who owns a bunch of Mexican language radio stations in Texas.
These are a couple of rich Texans who thought they could jump into the movie business for a weekend and make a killing at the box office. Which is fine. Greed is how the business started. But it also came with passion in telling a story. That film clip looks like crap because this film is a crap shoot. Just another crock pot venture.
Michael Kelso talking about OS.
LOL
Date shifts “to be determined” are major, major momentum killers. It sends up red flags (warranted or unwarranted) and totally ruin projects. Bloggers and social networks feed off this type of stuff and the stigma of a “project in trouble” can rarely be shaken. Open Road is screwed.
Will be huge at Redbox!
And small on iTunes.
Heard that Mark Hulme and Marcos Rodriguez can’t come up with the P&A money for the Open Road service deal. Makes sense, who would put up $10M to open a cable movie on 1000 screens?
Not me.
They will have to sell this film to HBO or Showtime or some other network maybe CBS would want to air it they like Kutcher.
Okay, honestly and I’m not trying to be rude but whoever is managing Ashton Kutcher’s career needs to invest in some voice lessons for this guy. That high pitch stuff he does is distracting, not funny and is a bad habit. When was the last time he took an acting class? Come on guys, handle your stuff with him or will not transition well into adult roles.
Hey guys, lets remember this isn’t Gone With the Wind. Its just a biopic about a real jerk, almost impossible to work with even off LSD (ask anyone) who became a billionaire while selling cool. Ashton while funny was also a pain to work with (said people from That 70s show) who made millions acting cool. So Ashton may really have a lot in common with Jobs, good and bad.
This P.O.S. smells like a Silver flick. “Straight to video!”
Asshat Koocher is a worse actor than every single main cast-member of Entourage…and that’s saying something.
Saw it (twice) at Sundance and was actually amazed at how much like Steve Jobs he was. I grew up in Palo Alto, saw Jobs around town many times over the years, worked at Apple in the ’80s. not claiming to be an expert, but, I was expecting a farce and was really surprised to enjoy watching it. Been snooping on Kutcher since then, guess what, he’s a smart guy. So, don’t knock it til you’ve tried it.
It does make sense to postpone it because there isn’t even a trailer. Can’t say this isn’t surprising. I do believe the movie has potential to do decent business with a good ad campaign. Something that couldn’t happen in such a short time. Hopefully they’ll get a trailer out to attach to their movie The Host though.
Look, Jobs is such a compelling character that I think it might work. I actually think Ashton is pretty good casting.
WHO needs it? –WHO asked for it?
Surely a documentary is all that’s needed.
And, of course, there’ll be no examination
of the Globalist handover of our economy
to RED China —-and the slave borgs that
are operating to this day.
———————-CHECK IT OUT.
I see he never took Cameron Crowe’s advice to get acting lessons (after he bombed the audition for “Elizabethtown”). How does he stay so successful??
The Whiz, I heard about Ashton Kutcher’s disastrous audition- even Cameron Crowe was shocked. Kutcher is still successful, because he is still a commodity. Keep in mind, he has acted in some successful and lousy rom-coms and his sitcom is a hit.
Kutcher’s voice is too recognizable. He looks like Ashton Kutcher in every movie.
