EXCLUSIVE: Break Media is adding a high octane new channel to their portfolio, just in time for SXSW. The male-targeted online network is launching their new YouTube channel Hardcoded with a web series that blends found footage with episodic action, starring James Kyson (Heroes), Camille Guaty (The Vampire Diaries), Wes Chatham (The Unit), Patrick Fabian (The Last Exorcism), and Jason Manuel Olazabal (Make It Or Break It).
Armed Response follows members of a SWAT team as they battle a Mexican drug cartel at the Port Of Long Beach and unfolds entirely through helmet-mounted cameras and security footage. SXSW audiences will get a sneak peek at the four-episode series on Saturday, March 9 when director Justin Lutsky, Break Media SVP Greg Siegel, and SXM’s Thomas Bannister and Matt Michnovetz host a panel in the fest’s Digital Domain section. (Watch an exclusive trailer below.) The first episode will debut on YouTube via Hardcoded on March 12.
“Break Media is the largest entertainment platform for men aged 18-34 online”, said Siegel, “and one of the things our audience has been more and more responding to is genres of content traditionally gotten offline.” Hardcoded will be aimed at more “testosterone-driven programming” including action, FX-oriented, and sci-fi properties with an emphasis on filmmaker-driven projects.
Produced by SXM and Break and filmed “guerilla-style” in just a few contained locations, Armed Response is also breaking new ground with a studio film partnership that aligned in the past few weeks. FilmDistrict’s Gerard Butler-starrer Olympus Has Fallen (in theaters March 22) is sponsoring the web series in what Siegel likens to how films advertise on television: “It’s aligning your content with the type of content the audience is there to consume, like a media buy with a traditional TV show”.
Armed Response thus far consists of four five-minute episodes but it and web properties like it could lead to cross-platform extensions or continuations, according to Bannister. The series is created by Bannister and Lutsky, written by Michnovetz, and produced by Bannister and Larry Laboe for SXM.

This is so bad!
looks great! I’m excited to see where this goes
Big surprise that it’s sponsored content. Break needs to stop relying on other people’s money to fund them.
GOD IS AWESOME!!!!! #letsROK!
This is by far the best thing that I have ever seen in my life.
This is by far the best thing I have ever seen in my life.
Sweet action series by Break Media and S-X-M. Definitely love the 1st-person camera angles.
can’t wait to see this!
Hmmm… Interesting idea. The trailer looks cool! I’ll definitely be interested to see how the story unfolds.
I’m not 100% sure that our society needs another shoot-em-up series (especially since it’s such a sensitive issue in America) but I have supported S-X-M since they produced Easy to Assemble in 2008. If Armed Response is as great as anything else S-X-M has produced before (which it looks like it will be), then I will definitely be supporting it when it comes out.
break.com really? does anyone visit that site anymore?
This panel is open to the public?! I was thinking about going to SXSW for the first time this year. If I end up going, my friends and I will be stopping by for this sneak preview. Reminds me of my favorite video game, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.” This is awesome!
I think there is a lot of potential for this show to go places because they know their audience. Interested to see how this business model works in the future as less people are going to the movie theaters.
im excited to see this show launch!! glad to know this stuff is getting out there!!!
All these comments read like someone furiously typing compliments at the break/sxm office. C’mon guys, just let your little action short get released and we’ll decide how good/not good it is. Spamming deadline isn’t going to fool anyone into thinking this is anything other than a cheap D-level action experiment.
