Zero Charisma was magical. Cheap Thrills is the best feature debut from a director I’ve seen in years. Very curious what E.L. Katz will do next.
Brie Larson in Short Term 12 is a breakout role for her. I’ve been going to SXSW for 8 years and never have I seen a film that has been universally loved like Cheap Thrills! A well deserved honor even if I had to look away a few times!
Larson is SXSW’s “IT” girl…director Cretton with his 2 films is one of the indie voices to watch! Katz has burst on the scene a la Tarentino with a film equally as brazen as Reservoir Dogs. Hope Drafthouse gets his film seen by the masses!
I saw 26 films at SXSW, my top 10: 1. Drinking Buddies 2. Cheap Thrills 3. You’re Next 4. Mud 5. Short Term 12 6. Zero Charisma 7. Evil Dead 8. Milo 9. Snap 10. Some Girl(s). If Holy Ghost People didnt have so much narration and Big Ass Spider didnt have some of the worst efx ever they would have cracked the top 10!
