UPDATE, 10:15 AM: History and The Bible executive producers, husband and wife Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, just addressed the Obama-Satan controversy. “History channel has the highest respect for President Obama,” the network said in a statement. “The series was produced with an international and diverse cast of respected actors. It’s unfortunate that anyone made this false connection. History’s The Bible is meant to enlighten people on its rich stories and deep history.”
Burnett and Downey used stronger language in dismissing the connection, suggesting that the actor playing the Devil may have been simply type cast. “This is utter nonsense,” they said. “The actor who played Satan, Mehdi Ouzaani, is a highly acclaimed Moroccan actor. He has previously played parts in several Biblical epics — including Satanic characters long before Barack Obama was elected as our President.” Added Downey: “Both Mark and I have nothing but respect and love our President, who is a fellow Christian. False statements such as these are just designed as a foolish distraction to try and discredit the beauty of the story of The Bible.”
PREVIOUS 7:15 AM: History’s hit miniseries The Bible had its 3rd installment last night. It’s already been taken to task for its use of beautiful actors in all key roles. Now the project’s casting choice for the role of Satan has come under fire for the apparent resemblance of Moroccan actor Mehdi Ouazzani to President Barack Obama. The topic created a firestorm online, ignited by a slew of tweets about the likeness of The Bible‘s Devil to the 44th President of the United States (conservative firebrand Glenn Beck was among the first to post comment) and side-by-side image comparisons like the one here from the Daily Mail. History is expected to respond to the controversy soon. The Bible, which has been shattering cable ratings records, is History’s third miniseries. The first, The Kennedys, also was surrounded by controversy after the cable network dropped it shortly before airdate, allegedly under pressure from the family of another US President, John F. Kennedy. Followup Hatfields & McCoys went on without a hitch and garnered big ratings as well as a ton of awards.

Even better, Jesus again shows up as a blonde. Plenty of those among the jews of Judea back in the day. The devil, of course, pops up as a darkie. Next time with a french accent. God Bless America.
What’s new? A man’s character is more telling than his appearance, the resemblance of the two is far deeper than Hollywood makeup artist could ever simulate.
I agree – too close for comfort and just a stupid stupid thing to do.
Doesn’t look like Obama. But the bigger implication here is:
Jesus is White
Satan is Brown
Many a history buff wrote Jesus was the one with dark-skin.
If you compare the two images shown here, the resemblance is striking. Clearly, this casting and makeup choice plays right into the hands of conservative viewers. Anyone who thinks the producers were not aware of the resemblance is naive at best.
This is so beyond stupid. Headline should be that the actor who plays Satan looks like President Obama. Why insult the actor playing Satan?
The bigger story is why John the Baptist looked like Adam Duritz.
If you google the actor’s name and see what he looks like, there is no way he was cast to “represent” Obama. If likeness is what they wanted, they failed. This is just wishful thinking on the part of some irrelevant personality looking to drum up up some publicity for himself.
Shouldn’t this be on Syfy?
Syfy would never air something with such a ridiculous plot. they wouldn’t want to sully the reputation they’ve built with Ice Spiders and Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus.
he looks nothing like Obama. someone is smoking crack
I love all the plants from the History Channel here who are claiming there’s no resemblance whatsoever.
You, along with billionaire one-percenter Mark Burnett, producer of The Bible who doesn’t like that his taxes went up for the first time in 10 years, can go claim innocence elsewhere.
And for those who use the “Why was it okay to use Bush’s head in Game of Thrones” but not Obama as Satan?” Here’s three reasons:
1) Bush lied to start a war that has claimed, conservatively, over 100k lives. I’d say a one second sight gag in the bg of a silly show is going easy on the guy.
2) This is a so-called “religious” mini-series based on what millions claim/believe to be the absolute truth. Game of Thrones is recognized by its audience as fantasy.
3) Because of #2, millions of ignorant Americans are actually looking at the show as an accurate representation of the most important truth of their lives, thus the slam against the President amounts to propaganda, and, simply, it’s dangerous. I don’t think it’s too far out there to imagine that some religious whack-job with too many guns just got the proof he needed that Obama is The Great Satan just like his cool radio talk-show hosts have been telling him for the past five years.
But seriously, taxing the 1%, fighting for the middle class and ending two wars…yep, Satan!!
Real issue. Jesus would be black if you cast accurately. Most everyone in the bible would be black except the Romans.
Um, no.
How typically racist. All black men look alike. Not surprised that Hollywood thinks that way.
If Mark catered to putting a political agenda into his work then I’m out of this series. I don’t want this in the back of my mind when I just want to enjoy the show. Mixing any political message with The Bible is just NOT COOL!! We got enough hate-mongers who use the Bible to their own ends and I’m just not going to support it.
I respect Burnett and Downey’s sentiment that they wanted a ‘diverse cast’ but why cast a black man as Satan? Why is that the first place they went? And if they can’t see that as a problem…
*shakes head*
And he totally looks like the prez. Seriously.
The numbers from last night must not be very good if History is reaching with a story like this.
OK all you smarter-than-thou. Who does the guy who plays Jesus look like? What? You can’t find one, not a one Republican (dead or alive) who looks like him? Bet if you checked the movie archives you’d find a Republican who resembles a Satan character; maybe more. And, bet someone in hollywood connected with “The Bible” came up with the Satan story. Hey Mark, was it you? Great PR. LOL
Hallelujah! Finally casting didn’t reach into their old (talent) bag of tricks and got this one right!
All this shit on the History Channel.
The History Channel.
It’s certainly not History. It’s garbage. Complete sh*t for the uneducated masses. And I do mean uneducated.
Sometimes people just have nothing better to do that start trouble. If there was no black president, someone would say, “How come there aren’t more Middle Eastern actors with key roles?” Gimme a break… I have more of a problem with a story deviating from what’s written. For all I care, Samson could be a dwarf… So what?
What the liberals are really up set about is that Obama wasn’t portray as god. Considering how they treat him, that is exactly how they react everytime a fact or two they don’t like is mentioned about him. Louis Farrakhan: “…the messiah is absolutely speaking.” TIME magazine: “He’s almost a god!” Jamie Foxx and two or three others that I can mention feel the same way about him. The truth of the matter is, liberals believe everyone should kiss his butt everytime he speaks.
Shouldn’t people be more offended that John the Baptist looked more like the singer to the Counting Crows?
Carl…shame on you!!! Evidentially YOU were watching this so called. “S**t channel…you and your “uneducated” self need to turn on the reality tv world of “wrestling” sounds more like your speed!!! Don’t you ever knock something you obviously are “uneducated” about yourself!!! We ALL fear what we don’t know!!!
~
So because this actor looks somewhat like Obama he can’t play the devil, seems a bit silly that this is even an issue that needed History or the creators to respond to.
