No amount of cajoling or coaxing lured hyper-cagey producers or cast into the spoiler zone at tonight’s PaleyFest 2013 event featuring CBS’ The Big Bang Theory. Moderated by NCIS star Pauley Perrette, the panel was big on camaraderie but small on the news front as series co-creators and exec producers Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady plus exec producer Steven Molaro joined cast members Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch for a lively and entertaining discussion.
Producers and cast were resolutely tightlipped but that didn’t deter Perrette and fans in the audience at the Saban or in movie theaters nationwide for a Fathom Events live broadcast from trying. When asked if they’re considering any future geek celebrity guest spots, Prady deadpanned that they’d considered Jorge Bergoglio but with his ascension today as Pope the only show that could afford him is NCIS. When asked whether Amy (Bialik) and Sheldon (Parsons) will ever consummate their relationship, the producers would only say it’s something they’re considering, prompting Parsons to joke that he and Bialik “can’t wait to rehearse”.

While no spoilers were spilled, stories from behind the scenes were told or rehashed, allowing the cast to show off their comic timing and chemistry. Discussing the famous flash mob organized by Cuoco, an event she said half-jokingly was “the
greatest moment of my life”, Galecki said it was evidence of the tremendous friendship between cast and crew. Lorre at one point called Molaro “the beating heart of the show” when talking about the current season’s focus on relationships between characters. Later, the cast elicited sustained applause from the audience when they singled out the writers (who were in attendance) for praise.

Also evident was the huge devotion the show inspires in fans. In the Saban audience were fans who traveled from as far away as the Philippines and Brazil to attend. That kind of devoted fandom is probably the reason why, when asked how long the producers expect the show to continue, they referred to a recent comment Parsons made that it could last at least 10 years. Given that Big Bang Theory is currently the highest rated TV comedy with an average of 18.9 million viewers this season, that seems within the realm of possibility.

I traveled all the way from Kazakhstan to see the funny Big Bangers and they were the bangiest big bangers I have ever had the honor and sexual pleasure of witnessing in person. They made me tingle all over and gave me goose bumps.
Another thing big ratings have lead these fools to think this is some well written brilliant show. The show has slide big time this season regardless of the ratings and it would be lovely for some non-ass kisser in the media to question why so heavy on the romantic stuff and why is Penny being turned into a loser drunken slut.
Good post, Lissa! I, too, question what the writers are doing with/to Penny. The first half of this season was extremely uneven, and at one point actively quite bad, but the last three or four episodes have been a big improvement: fun, affectionate, with some real laughs.
i dont understand what is so great about this show its not even funny.
I think one must have a slight kink in their make-up to “get” this show. In addition, its extremely humorous to one with above average intelligence. I, personally, think that TBBT is a hoot!
I adore Sheldon and hope that he and Amy will have coitus in the near future. I’ll bet if Sheldon puts his mind to it, he will be quite competant at it, thus insuring Amy’s enjoyment and the viewers’. hehehehehehe
The moment Amy and Sheldon consummate their relationshio, the show will have jumped the shark.
Other possible shark-jumping moments: Bernadette gets pregnant, Leonard and Penny marry.
@Rosanne – If you want to see people having sex so much, go watch the the mind-numbing Girls. Or, Lorre’s misogynistic Two and a Half Men. Better yet, go buy some porn. Stop channeling your Jim Parsons high school crush through Amy by wanting to see them have coitus, which will essentially not only be out of character for the star of the show, but also, trés gross if done with a character like Amy, who, on top of being annoying as hell, looks like she smells of mold and mildew. Oh BTW, it’s cute how you surmise that one oughta have an above-average intelligence “get” this show like you do, then go and yearn for the least intelligent thing ever, like Sheldon and Amy having sex. If Sheldon were real, he would’ve snorted with derision and thrown his arms in the air, exhausted by your tomfoolery. Or idiocy.
18 million viewers. Wow. I’m amazed at the devotion to mediocrity and familiarity. To think a show that’s equivalent to the 90′s TGIF “comedies” is the highest rated on tv is actually a profound statement on the state of situation comedies today. Has there ever been a time when there was such a glut of predictable, forgettable shows? Where’s the modern day classic? Not here with this show.
I saw this event at a cinema in Somerdale, NJ. I especially liked hearing about the behind-the-scenes tidbits and the sense of humor among the cast and producers. On the other hand, I was also surprised at how sparsely attended our local cinema was because I was aware that the event was sold out in some places.
Steven Molaro has the most beautiful, elegant hands in the business!
he should put those to good use then, and write something worthwhile; instead of pulling down the once-excellent nerdy show with his stupid relationship-y crap.
Hear hear.
I can’t stand the relationship crap that’s been so front and center this season, and I know it’s all Molaro’s fault. I want some light relief for 20 minutes, not be bored to tears by all the “feelings” they are having for each other. Pass the barf bag.
Wanting everyone to sob like he did during the hand-holding last scene of “The Countdown Reflection”? Come on, give the man a break. He obviously wasn’t hugged enough as a child, so he’s got to live his life vicariously through his characters. Forget that when writers begin to write for THEMSELVES rather than for their fans, the show’s integrity starts to tank. And forget that this is a sitcom, not a drama, and that he’s ruining Sheldon by making him go all OOC. Molaro’s third in command, following Lorre and Prady, goddammit. It’s HIS show. (Because when producers/writers start screwing up their once-amazing shows for easy, ratings-bait laughs, that’s ALWAYS their defense.)
shades of m.a.s.h,seinfeld & friends.. big bang is the biggest , always updated and fresh..the episode of sheldon working on his black hole theory and being secretive and the gang trying to find out by installing a camera in the room he goes into and locks.. i am still LMAO …keep it up they are going down in history as my generations greatest..i am 66 my wife 53 & father-in-law 83 he gets hysterical and fun to watch..
Comedy is pretty subjective, but BBT is a solid favorite, built on vivid well-defined characters, great story construction, and whip-crack timing. A new world gets old-school craftsmanship, and that is fine with me. 10 seasons? Cool.
Good lord, Mayim Bialik looks like Jim Parsons’ aunt. How the crapiola is she playing his “girlfriend” on the show? (Despite her shameless, real-life boner for her youthful costar, that is.)
That said, give ‘em more than 10 seasons, because at the end of this show, hell will freeze over before Bialik gets another high-profile job in Hollywood. I mean, really.
Ten seasons – way too frigging long; and, judging by Jim’s eyerolling reaction to the fact that the number was attributed to him in USA Today, the longevity guess wasn’t meant to be taken literally. I was a bit disgusted with the weak, softball questions and all the back-patting last night. It was funny as hell, so I was entertained, but what fan hasn’t had the soft kitty or bazinga question answered already? If you haven’t, you need to just donate your computer already cuz your a lazy f- who’s not really using it anyway. The question should have been raised as to whether they Really believed that the show could stay fresh while locked in all this relationship crap. Guess that’s not gonna happen with an actress (and FRIEND) moderating, rather than a critic or some other media savvy fan; such as they do at Comic Con.
Keeping Sheldon shackled to Amy, rather than, maybe, seeing what might happen if he explored the concept of dating, pretty much shows that the skis are already being polished up for a cringe-inducing run.
Amen and amen. What a waste of one of TV’s most unique and lovable characters to be with one of TV’s most repellent and abhorrent to date. On a once-awesome show to boot. Let’s drink to that. First round’s on me!
What a difference a season makes; from brilliant to vapid, school-girl stupidity in the matter of 5-6 episodes under the leadership of one, apparently, adolescent man. I couldn’t give a good damn that Johnny Galecki, or anyone else involved, thinks that this is their best season ever. Fact is; He’s Wrong. If you want flowers and romance, join a dating site and deal with it in your own life. Don’t keep c- up our show for your own personal satisfaction. The show, and it’s characters, have devolved to a level of dumbass and commonplace that you would never think possible having geniuses as your protagonists.
My daughter objects to how they have trivialized Asberger’s and use a person’s asexual nature as a punchline. I can see her point as these are not particularly funny topics. I don’t believe it takes an exceptional intellect to “get” this program but the occasional obscure reference does make for a nice sense of getting an inside joke. All of that “said”, I agree that the relationship-y bent veers away from the show’s core strength but to criticize Mayim Bialik for playing Amy to the hilt, hey – go easy. Some of us think she’s incredible. And I’m pretty sure she is the same age or slightly younger than Jim Parsons. Stop taking yourselves so seriously, people. If it makes you laugh, it has done its job and if you don’t like it, don’t watch it!
P.S. Does anyone remember the brilliant Sheldon Leonard? What a fine homage!
I love MAYIM BIALIK as Amy!!! She is a very talented actress and very pretty. There are some pictures of her that she looks like a Greek Goddess! She has a lovely smile and beautiful eyes. I think they look like the perfect couple. Jim Parsons has said that he admires Mayim as well as she does him. They are friends and work well together. Mayim you are very beautiful inside and out, and you deserve an Emmy for your amazing work, GREAT JOB!!!
I love Sheldon and Amy! And who’s to say he has been OOC? Sheldon is growing up people. He has to, anyway. His Nobel Prize dream is still there, only now, he shares it with an equal in the form of the most amazing character, Amy Farrah Fowler. And to those who say she’s not good-looking enough, how “amazing” and “wonderful” of you to judge people by their looks.
