EXCLUSIVE: After nine years on The Office, series star Jenna Fischer is venturing into theater, making her stage debut with a starring role in the off-Broadway production of Neil LaBute‘s new play Reasons To Be Happy. Fischer will segue from the Emmy-winning NBC series, which wraps production Friday on its ninth and final season, to Reasons To Be Happy at the MCC Theater. A follow-up to LaBute’s Tony-nominated Reasons To Be Pretty, Reasons To Be Happy features the same characters three years later. After a contentious break-up, Steph (Fischer) and Greg are wondering if they can make a fresh go of it. Trouble is, she’s married to someone else and he’s just embarked on a relationship with Steph’s best friend. Alison Pill played the Steph role in Reasons To Be Pretty, which also originated at the MCC Theater before moving to Broadway. Previews for Reasons To Be Happy begin at the MCC Lucille Lortel Theater on May 16, the same night The Office finale airs on NBC. The play opens June 11. Fischer, who has been on The Office since the pilot, also has wrapped Mathew Weiner’s feature You Are Here with Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, and Amy Poehler.

I hope he gets Thomas Sadoski back.
Thomas Sadoski was wonderful in this play, and, sadly, he lost the Tony to Geoffrey Rush.
I’ll be curious if this is different than any of his other plays. Generally speaking they all revolve around the big reveal of some dirty little secret to which plot and characters are all just behavioral conduits for. “These characters aren’t who they represent themselves as being” – same narrative mechanism all of the time – if you can call it that. Cardboard characters? More like corrugated paper arranged around the dirty little secret. Sitcom Arthur Miller dipped in twisted corrossive modernity basically. Can see why Jenna Fischer would want to do it though. But that’s another thing that he does. Takes someone that we have pre-disposed feelings for (as established by her other great work) and then casts against type. But Mike Nichols he isn’t. Nothing…ever…quite…works…and this has been the case for how long now?
I feel compelled to mention the role of Steph was played on Broadway by Marin Ireland who was nominated for Tony for the performance. She was stunning in it. No shade for Fisher, who’s a lovely actress but I’d have very much enjoy to see Ireland reprise the role.
Oh, yes ! Marin Ireland is a stunning actress period. She was extraordinary in Reasons To Be Pretty, and when she guest starred on Homeland . All of the top Hollywood big wigs need to be pursuing her big time.
I’m a big fan of Jenna Fischer and hope that she meets with great success off-Broadway. There’s nothing like live ‘theatah’ to show that you’ve got what it takes to entertain your audience.
Pam Beesly and Leslie Knope? Gotta see that.
