UPDATE, 2:46 PM: The final ratings numbers are in, and it turned to be a better-than-estimated night for Survivor: Caramoan. The CBS series went from a 2.5/8 and being 4% down from the previous week in fast nationals to a 2.7/9 — good for a new season high. Not unexpectedly, Fox’s American Idol also rose from fast nationals in the final numbers. The singing contest series was up two tenths, from 3.6/11 to 3.8/11. That’s even with last week’s final ratings result of 3.8/10.
PREVIOUSLY, 9:01 AM: On a night filled with repeats, Wednesday turned into a battle of two reality veterans. American Idol (3.6/11) kicked off its live Top 10 finalist performances last night without Nicki Minaj, who was stuck in LA traffic, according to Ryan Seacrest. Once the tardy judge showed up, sprinkling remarks about how contestant Paul Jolley’s performance “stimulated” her, how Angela Miller was “perfection to her on every level and Kree Harrison’s similarity to making great waffles, the two-hour show took off. Even on a night when adults 18-49 TV usage was down 9% in the 8-10 PM period, Idol managed to a bit in terms of total viewers; it dipped 5% from the final number of last week’s show in the demo but rose 3% in viewers to 13.1 million, compared to March 6’s fast nationals of 12.7 million. American Idol was the night’s top-rated program of the night in 18-49, and Fox took the top spot in the demo and in total viewers with 13.084 million watching.

On CBS’ Survivor: Caramoan (2.5/8) contestant Brandon Hantz had what can only be called a full-on meltdown that caused chaos for everyone. Needless to say, the Favorites unanimously voted Hantz out of their tribe. The reality show didn’t suffer such a harsh fate: Survivor slipped a mere 4% from last week’s show. Like last week, CBS also ran encores of Criminal Minds (1.8/5) and CSI (1.7/5) last night. ABC was all encores except for a new The Neighbors (1.4/4), which fell 18% from last week to a series low. Otherwise it was repeats of The Middle (1.3/4), Modern Family (1.8/5), Suburgatory (1.3/4) and Nashville (0.7/2).
Except for an original Whitney (1.2/4) at 8 PM which was down 8% from last week, NBC was all repeats also, with a Whitney (0.8/3) encore at 8:30 PM followed by Law & Order: SVU (1.2/3) and Chicago Fire (1.1/3).
The CW ran Arrow (0.5/2) and Supernatural (0.4/1) encores.

Bummer that The Neighbors was so low, last nights episode was pure genius.
In all of the million of words that have been written about this show on blogs, in magazines, newspapers…I don’t think anyone has ever used the words “Neighbors” and “genius” together in the same sentence. Congrats.
I was watching Idol, which I’ve picked up again after many years away from it – am I the only one who finds Minaj’s late arrival really odd? She tweeted about Malibu traffic, and I’m wondering why she’s that far from Century City just a couple of hours before a live taping?
How much are they paying her, anyway? Maybe I’m wrong and this is typical, I have no idea.
Interesting that people complained about Jlo and Steven last year, who IMO were very good judges, had style and were FUN! and this table of judges seem to be straining to like each other. Ms. Minaj is the “star” and she’s def taking over the table. All the news reports are about Nicki, forget the contestants, etc. 4 judges is way too many….and her eye rolling the rest of the judges is just annoying….but she continues to get the press doesn’t she?
It’s amazing to me that even with the MUCH publicised meltdown of Brandon Hantz, that the ratings were still down for Survivor. I fear that the show will be canceled before I get my chance as a contestant.
Nicki Manaj is hideoous. Get her off the show immediate.y
Neither Xmas nor summer, but people are expected to watch repeats? They could at least pair the new Neighbors epi with a new Suburgatory epi, for f’s sake. Even the DVRs should be empty by now. I thought I was watching a season of NASHVILLE and ARROW, but I guess not.
The only great thing about the night: THE AMERICANS. Hey, and they showed up all new and exciting, just like last week and the week before. And very romantic to boot.
Oh, now I get it. This is Russia. Wait in line, perhaps there will be a new episode or two to be had. Or maybe not. Just tune in and shut up and watch the commercials. Perhaps they’re new.
I agree with A.M. What’s with all the repeats?! Every year it gets worse & worse with the scheduing. Networks are killing themselves with so many fuckin’ repeat episodes. Networks need some type of a new model or blueprint for a television season. There just are not enough episodes for a season which begins in September(on average) & ends in May (again,on average). Why don’t they have shorter seasons or produce more episodes!? In the end,the ones getting shafted are us(the television viewers) with a lack of consistency of new episodes of our favorite programs. Is it any wonder more people are abandoning the broadcast networks in favor of other entertainment sources(Netflix,Cable,etc.). Oh, and don’t even get me started on this hiatus nonsense! I remember a show called Revolution which aired when I was a younger babe which STILL hasn’t returned after a hiatus. Ya gotta love these networks huh-NOT!!!
Survivor? American Idol? YAWN!
What happened to shows producing 32-34 episodes a season like the original Melrose Place and Beverly Hills 90210 and ER. There weren’t these extended weeks reruns.
When Revolution returns low and NBC is scratching there head, they best be quick to follow LOST’s successful pattern of nonstop NEW episodes.
That episode of Survivor was one of the best episodes of reality tv ever.
Has network TV really sunk so low as what aired last night on these networks? NBC is a joke as we already knew but seriously, can’t the networks think up anything better than airing this gaudy reality garbage and can someone please tell FOX to cancel Idol once and for all?!
I just had the most amazing thought. Why doesn’t Nbc just hold Revolution back until the 1st. of next month? It would certainly fit the whole April Fools Day vibe. Honestly, doesn’t Nbc see Revolution viewers as fools who should be kept waiting one third of a year for their program to return? Seriously, the complete disregard Nbc has for the fans of Revolution is a disgrace!
I loved Jlo and Steven and what they brought to the judges’ table. I put up with Randy and his “dog” act. I love the contestants. I appreciate their talents and effort. But not so much this year and I blame the judges. They come across jaded self involved. Jlo had so much energy and compassion. Steven was spot on. Randy is Randy. And the contestants responded accordingly. But not one contestant in the final 10 this year was chosen for the right reasons. Not one of them shines. It all starts with the judges. I would bring back Jlo and say good bye to Mariah. Mariah is a talent beyond words. But she does not shine as a judge. I would keep Randy because he is the “dog”. Keith is fine but no Steven. I keep Nicki. She is a drama queen. I enjoy Jimmy and Ryan. No need for any changes there.
