Ending its three-night live round, American Idol (3.5/10) pared it down to the final 10 contestants of Season 12 on Thursday. Spilling two minutes over, the scheduled 90-minute live show had a lot of Ryan Seacrest shuttling back and forth to the holding room to bring the lucky ones back on stage. It also had a mixed bag of ratings results. While last night’s Idol dipped 5% from last week’s two-hour show, it went up 6% in total viewers from 12.2 million to
12.9 million. Expect adjustments upward in the final numbers. After Idol, there was more singing as a new Glee (2.5/7) went to the movies last night as the students of McKinley High pulled tunes from the big screen, including a show stopping Tom Cruise homage. With a bit of Idol overrun to help fuel it, the one-hour episode featured the series’ 500th song but it also starred a rocketing 47% rise over the last original on February 14, 2013.
As is often the case, The Big Bang Theory (5.4/16) was the most watched show of the night on Thursday. Even though it slipped 4% from its last original two weeks ago, the geek sitcom pulled in 17.43 million viewers. With 13.56 million people watching, Two And A Half Men (3.9/11) was even with its last new show on February 21. However, the other Chuck Lorre show of the night did have a first of its own Thursday as it pulled ahead of Idol in the 18-49 demo for the first time. Person Of Interest (2.8/8) dipped 3% from its last original two weeks ago to tie its season low. CBS ended its night with a repeat of Elementary (1.6/5). With 12.868 million watching, CBS won the night in terms of total viewers but Fox took the top spot in the Adults 18-49 demographic.
After a rocky two weeks of series lows, including one where it didn’t have to face a new Big Bang Theory, Community(1.5/5) rose 25% on Thursday. That was followed by repeats of Parks And Recreation (1.0/3) and The Office (1.0/3). A new 1600 Penn (0.9/2) matched its series low of last week. Filling that slot left vacant by the quick cancellation of Do No Harm back on February 8, NBC finished the night with a Law & Order: SVU (1.0/3) repeat which was up a tenth from the encore last week. ABC had all repeats with Shark Tank (1.2/3), Grey’s Anatomy (1.1/3) and Scandal (1.0/3). The CW ran encores of The Vampire Diaries (0.4/1) and Beauty and the Beast (0.3/1)
Deadline's Dominic Patten - tip him here.

Community has been hit or miss this season for me, but last night’s episode was actually really great. I hope they’re finally finding their groove.
What was NBC thinking with 1600 PENN. Not only is it not funny but it’s annoying too.
Still confounded by those Big Bang Theory ratings. Good for them but paint by numbers comdey isn’t my thing.
Community’s rating are veeerrrrry interesting. My guess is NBC will cancel it although that rating is worlds better than show’s they’ve kept and will likely renew (New Normal, Go On, Rock Center).
They will renew community, go on an rock center but your crazy if you think new normal is getting renewed with its series lo rating at a 0.9

Community Will Rule The World!!!
How the hell is TBBT on top? Sex, sexist jokes, sex, predictable relationship push and pull, sex. WTF happened to all the brilliant science jokes and profound repartee? Might as well re-title this show to “Friends with PhDs.” Ever since mushy Steve Molaro was given more voice, his insistence on “character growth” by pairing everyone up has become tediously clichéd AND offensively stereotypical. Is being in a relationship the ONLY way for people to grow and better themselves? Look, if you want consistent character growth, go write a drama. This is a comedy. Has Molaro not learned anything from the classic greats like MASH, Cheers, Seinfeld, Frasier, Friends? Same original cast who stayed true to character from beginning to end; with very minimal character growth because their writers didn’t toy with what the fans fell in love with from the get-go. And for chrissakes, get that annoying Mayim Bialik in all her creepy glory outta there. Or at least lessen her exposure if the writers have such a hard-on for Her Royal Stiffness. She is best tolerated in small doses, if tolerated at all.
“Brilliant science jokes and profound repartee”? What show were you watching?!?
The comment reads: “WTF happened to all the brilliant science jokes and profound repartee?” In other words, Big Bang’s first 3 seasons, of which the erstwhile intellegence has since vaporized into the ether – for the sake of the ratings, I presume. In other words, you need to read better before commenting. In other words, what show have YOU been watching?!?
what show are YOU watching? as someone who’s seen the show since its stealth inception in 2007 (and who also has a copy of the original—and shelved— unaired 2006 pilot), brilliant science jokes and profound repartee did dominate the first 2-3 seasons of bbt. the question posted, though rhetorical, is valid: where the f*ck did all that brilliance from the earlier seasons go? down the gutter for easy laughs and hard ratings, that’s where.
Weird comment, and why blame Molaro for expanding both the show’s cast and its appeal? (If you had your way, with a smaller cast and less “character growth,” the show would garner lower ratings. Is this your idea of a smart decision?) Sounds like you have an axe to grind…
actually, the comment is quite accurate. i’m one of the oldest fans of the show (since season 1) and don’t particularly like the new changes on bbt (expanding cast regulars for one, feel too forced for the sake of storylines, and cluttered, as opposed to the original 5), but i don’t blame molaro entirely (i mean, i assume lorre and prady still have final say on the direction of their show). that said, i understand fans who do blame molaro, since, if you’ve read enough interviews of the guy, you’d be aware that since prady took a step back, molaro has been given more authority on the show’s storylines. he, and new additions to the bbt writers pool like prady’s assistant tara hernandez, have huge emotional boners for the new characters (cleverly disguised as “character growth”), like amy farrah, whom the fans can’t seem to agree to love. while other writers can make do excellently with just the main cast and a bunch of recurring guests (i.e., friends’ bright, kauffman & crane), these nickelodeon-graduted writers just seem to fail at. enter the dire need for new “regulars,” to aid them in thinking outside the box, so to speak.
When exactly will Nbc pull 1600 Penn•••Geez•••What are they waiting for?
Josh Gad was quoted just yesterday as saying,”If people are patient I think they will find it to be one of the most extraordinary comedies on TV.” Why wouldn’t Greenblatt believe him?
Mr. Greenblatt doesn’t have to believe what Josh Gad says. He is able to watch the episodes that have yet to air and can make that decision for himself.
Sarcasm…look it up.
I think 1600 Penn is funny. I’ve really enjoyed watching it. It is certainly funnier than TBBT.
POI down 3% to tie its’ season low? What’s going on Petar? I’m shocked!•••shocked I tell ya!
What is going on with POI? Read below. Writers who mess with the formula that are responsible for the audience numbers suddenly experiment to “keep the show fresh”? Unfortunately people like what they like not what you give ‘em and there are too many choices out there to put up with being jerked around. Two weeks ago POI went off the rails with a weird episode featuring a new character – and there have been WAY too many of them this season – with the regulars showing up at the very end. And viewers are all “What is this? A pilot? What?” and tuned out and then a rerun gives them an extra week to find something they like better and you expect them to come back?
I LOVED POI’s first season and I never would have said this even with the first few weak episodes of Season 2 but they keep this up and Season 2 may be their last.
I thought that episode with Sarah Shahi was the best in the series.
I want a well scripted, well acted hour of television….and that one had it in spades.
If I am wrong and more people would prefer the “same old, same old”, I would prefer the show gone down fighting with clever twists than follow your advice and just pound it out.
I know I know. You could not go anywhere where POI was discussed after that episode and read the posts of those people who said that they loved the episode. The enthusiasm was a little obvious – the POI interns need to tone it down if they want to be believed.
We all want well scripted episodes but if we tune in to POI we what the POI that we were promised, not another show starring someone we may or may not know playing a character we may or may not care about. The shows that have or legs – whether its CSI, Bones, NCIS or Law and Order – were smart enough to know that their audience did want same old same old. And it does not make sense to give people something they show that they like and then change it and just expect them to be okay with it.
And it does not matter what either of us like because whether the show stays on will be a numbers game, and the numbers for the past two first run episodes have show a decline.
Love how he fails to mention POI beat out Idol by over 2 million overall viewers, beating everything but BBT for the night in that category, plus it was the first new episode since February 21st.
Person of Interest is the best show on network TV right now, plain and simple.
NBC would kill to have those numbers.
Glee has anchored this episode and last with its core leads: Michele and Monteith, each driving the action in each location. And it works! Why the writers always mess with theformula is beyond.me.
To experiment and keep the show fresh instead of sticking to the same old status quo and risking things to wear themselves out thin?
So,2 & 1/2 Men passed Idol in the 18-49 demo-GOOD!!! I can’t wait until Idol finally dies a horrible death. On a weekly basis, there are signs that is eventually going to happen. Every time someone beats them in a new way-I’m happy! They may be only partial victories, but, bit by bit those partial wins will add up & lead to the destruction of this glorified, overhyped,&,overexposed program!
Hey! Don’t you know you not supposed to ever say anything negative and truthful about American Idol. The eyes of FOX are watching (LOL). You better take that back before they start ranting and falling to pieces(LOL). Seriously, it could have performed worse, so good job.
I also thought Big Bang Theory had a weak episode filled with poorly written sex and penis jokes that weren’t even funny. You would think that a writing team that has to rely so heavily on sex and penis jokes in their sitcoms, would at least make sure that they are funny before inserting them. They were actually cringe inducing moreso than funny.
And Glee’s numbers don’t impress because Grey’s Anatomy and The Office were in repeats and 1600 Penn is just holding a spot until cancellation season begins in earnest for NBC. When Glee gets those demo numbers with the schedule full of new competition, then they can celebrate.
Person of Interest being down on a week without a new Grey’s Anatomy to challenge it has to be disconcerting for CBS.
Looks like Community got the Paleyfest bump on Thursday! I think general push at that event was #watchcommunitylive and it seems to have worked.
@NervisRex,loved how you failed to notice the sarcastic humor in my comments. 3% drop means nothing. I just do it to keep Petar (who loves POI) on his toes. Lighten up dude.
