Following what many saw as a preview of what CNN’s mornings might look like with Chris Cuomo and presumptive co-host Erin Burnett, Jeff Zucker’s network-in-progress got more bad ratings news. For the second day in a row, CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight sank to a yearly (2013) low in the prime 25-54 demographic with just 87,000 viewers. PMT is down 27% in total viewers, according to Nielsen data, and down 38% in the demo from its debut on January 17, 2011. Additionally, last night PMT had the lowest demo in its time slot, even beaten by sister network HLN’s Dr. Drew with 208,000 viewers in the demo. Morgan’s subjects last night included dysfunctional goings-on in Washington, the papal situation, and a conversation with Gus Searcy, the so-called mentor of Jodi Arias who’s on trial in Phoenix for killing her ex-boyfriend.

The guy is a total hack — and one of the worst interviewers in history. The person who must be enjoyng his crash-and-burn most is Larry King. And it’s still possible Piers will be prosecuted in the UK for the phone hacking scandal. Maybe going to jail can become his excuse for going off the air. Either way, his days are numbered.
gun violence is an important topic, BUT piers morgan has turned his show into a platform for gun violence. every night, it’s the same thing. he covers gun violence, and then crushes every other guest he has on and doesn’t let them speak.
although pier’s morgan was fun to watch, at times, in the first year, the combination of his gun violence ‘agenda’ + his approach with guests is stressful to watch now. don’t get me wrong, i like piers morgan, as a person (he’s solid) and has done some great interviews. but this current iteration of PMT is stressful.
i really miss the class with which larry king interviewed his guests. and if i remember his approach, it was to listen and let his guests speak so great interview tv “moments” would be born.
in closing, and this doesn’t have anything to do with what i said above, in the beginning, i used to like the PMT set. but i am coming to the conclusion that it’s too blue. people are winding down at night. and a lot of people have large flat screens. looking at a bright blue background for 60 minutes is taxing to the eyes. i propose a set change so it’s relaxing to watch PMT.
I love him! He says it the way it is without accepting the same old tired argument that more guns means less shootings. How utterly fatuous, this is clearly wrong. He is not contesting the 2nd amendment, he is simply saying we have no need for assault weapons in the classroom. In case you haven’t heard, the French no longer have need of a guillotine. Perhaps they woke up to the fact that we don’t need to be barbaric in this day and age.
I hope Zucker does hire Joy Behar with a good conservative co-host to replace Piers. She is a fearless interviewer and having someone to balance her would make for a great show
Joy Behar would be a good fit for the slot. As well as being a good talker, she is also a good listener.
Behar has the intellect of a housefly. Not exactly a deep thinker and usually comes across as poorly informed.
I couldn’t agree with you more. In her two-year stint on HLN, Ms. Behar revolutionized the talk show format by turning it into a “conversation” show. Her guests were carefully picked, she did her homework, and the result was an hour of wit, candor, intelligence and bracing good humor. With Anderson Cooper at 8PM followed by Joy at 9PM, CNN would boast 2 hours of prime prime-time TV the likes of which we’ve never had the privelege of seeing.
I’m not sure “fearless” reporting is what Jeff Zucker’s CNN is looking for these days.
Joy Behar?! Are you kidding? She already had a HLN talk show that tanked (although its initial ratings were strong). I watched that show – did you? She just can’t carry a talk show, doesn’t have the chops or the personality to pull it off.
Funny this guy was saying he would never let Alex Jones come back on his show after Alex wiped the floor with him once. However if he wants to save his ratings and quite possibly his career he may need Jones back on his show ASAP.
Alex Jones was an embarrassment to the USA. I used to follow his rhetoric, but I now find him manic and hysterical, Piers Morgan simply showed him up for the rant that he is. Sometimes we need to stand outside ourselves to see how the rest of the world views us. We are not a very healthy nation right now, and the gun fetish thing is a bit pathetic.

How in the world would CNN tolerate Morgan’s chairside manner. He absolutely will not show any respect for the guests view. His Gun Control viewpoints are so one sided and his lack of firearms knowledge is so obvious. I just can’t tune into his program anymore, it is just too frustrating to listen to his barrage of his one sided frame of mind.
Why hasn’t this been cancelled? Zucker would get interest for a high profile and much needed axing of this dud of a show.

I don’t have cable, but when I did see him, he has a very British smug way of interviewing. I think it works well in Britain…but I have no problem with his anti-gun rampage. All the media should be banging the drum against gun violence.
