UPDATED: Comedy TV writer Lester Lewis, who worked on The Office, died last night. He was 46. Lester most recently wrote and executive produced a “shortcom” project for Fox starring Michael Kosta, which the two co-created. It is eyed for the network’s summer Short-Com Comedy Hour series. Earlier this season, Lewis worked as a consulting producer on David Kohan and Max Mutchnick’s CBS comedy series Partners, having previously served as co-executive producer on Kohan and Mutchnick’s NBC series Four Kings. “We are devastated by the loss of this incredible man and brilliant writer,” Kohan and Mutchick said. “We had the privilege of working with him on two shows. They were both joyous experiences. Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and children at this time.” Lewis was a consulting producer on NBC’s Emmy-winning Office, where he spent four seasons. He started his career on The PJs and The Larry Sanders Show and had overall deals at Universal and Warner Bros. Lewis is survived by his wife and two young children.

He also worked on Flight of the Conchords and was always helpful to people.
That is very sad news, such a tragic loss…my prayers and condolences to his wife and family.
Terrible news.
My heart goes out to his family.
He helped me with my Larry Sanders spec when he worked on that show and I was dying to. He had no reason to help me. This is terrible news.
Larry Sanders is one of the top five shows in television history.
My sympathies to all for your loss of this brilliant man.
Anyone who knew him who can shed any light on why?
Pure tragedy. What a funny, sweet, easy-going guy. Devastating news. Just incomprehensible.
So sad, so much talent and to be so sad as to die over that! My prayers for his family.
This is such horrible news. Lester was one of the greats. He will be sorely missed.
Such a tragedy. A really good guy. So sweet, so generous.
Lester was one of the first people to show me any kindness in this business. He would always take time to offer his support and advice, even after we worked together. My thoughts are with his family and friends. Truly devastating.
None of us ever truly know what someone must be going through on the inside to resort to something of that nature.Who knows what type of internal demons he was battling. It’s a real shame•••May God bless & all the best to his wife & kids.
That’s two TV writer suicides in a few months. What can we do to stop this? Is there something happening that needs to be discussed and addressed? WGA can we meet about this?
I got to work with Lester on a show. Funny, sweet guy. My heart goes out to his family.
He was very kind and generous and respectful to
Others. My prayers are with his family.
Loved him. Worked with Lester on the PJs. Funny, charming and a great writer. RIP.
Another terrible loss among sitcom writers. My prayers and love to his family.
Crushing news. Wonderful heart. Wonderful man. Thoughts and prayers to his family.
Horrible and shocking. I met Lester when he was an assistant at Intertalent and then worked with him off and on for 20 years, including the Fox Shortcoms project which wrapped last month. He was truly a wonderful guy. Smart, funny, kind, a terrific producer and a complete professional. As everyone has already stated above, devastating.
Was lucky enough to have inherited Lester on staff early in his career… some hitters at that table for sure, but when Les pitched everybody learned to shut up, then laugh, then somebody wrote it down. Peace, funny gentle man.
Such shocking and devastating news about such a sweet, warm, and funny guy. Heartbreaking.
Just plain fucking heartbroken. This business is so cruel. And, yes, it was this business that killed him.
@heartbroken, i agree with you its so sad no on knows what and who drove him to this. in situations like this people blame the victim, say they were troubled or had private demons – when in reality specific unbearable people and situations help make suicide a real option – these cataclysmic unbearable people and incidents escape scrutiny. the guilty hide among the well wishers and the industry mourns then moves on. please, if you know these people or incidents that drove him to this, please share – it gives him a voice.
Lester was so kind, warm-hearted, and hilarious. Was inspiring to me when I worked on a show with him. Horrible to hear this. Love to his family.
Great guy, great talent. Always smiling, always kind. Lester will be desperately missed. My heart goes out to his family.
Gave me my first job in this business. Kind, thoughtful, hysterical, and brilliant. So shocked and saddened to hear this. My thoughts and prayers to his beautiful wife and kids.
Hadn’t seen Lester in 20 years but he was one of the kindest, most gentle souls.
