Now that ABC has shifted Happy Endings to air the series’ remaining originals back-to-back at 8-9 PM Fridays starting March 29, the network has launched a campaign asking fans to save the show:

“the network has launched a campaign asking fans to save the show:”
aka
“PLEASE STOP ME FROM KILLING THIS PUPPY!”
Maybe it wouldn’t be in dire straights if they didn’t try to move it around on a weekly basis. The scheduling team at ABC is absolutely part of the problem here.
I’m a big Happy Endings fan and hope by some miracle it isn’t canceled. That being said, while ABC’s moving of Happy Endings definitely hasn’t helped the show, ABC did give it plenty of exposure airing out of Modern Family. If it can’t get good ratings there, there’s really no better slot ABC could have put it. I think it’s destined to be one of those great comedies that people just don’t watch (Arrested Development being a perfect example). So I guess my question to you (FFSG) is what do you think would have been the best business decision for ABC? Note that I put “business” in there, because what many of us fans forget is that ABC is running a business and while us fans would say “keep it on after Modern Family”. That’s just not the answer considering it shed a huge number of viewers.
If I remember correctly, AJ, it shed quite a number of viewers in the Wednesday 9:30pm slot because those episodes were not preceded with a new Modern Family, nor was ABC promoting the fact it was a new episode. ABC was burning off episodes of Happy Endings in an otherwise repeat Wednesday lineup so that it could premiere Don’t Trust the B- with an all new episode of Modern Family.
I won’t miss Happy Endings. The first season was good. The second was outstanding. The third was irremediably bad. Goodybye, good riddance, and may Knighton, Wayans and Wilson find better work elsewhere.
I’m so sorry they staffed someone else over you in the 3rd season. Cheer up. It can’t be too bad over at Men At Work?
If you were going to use a TBS sitcom to insult, at least use a Tyler Perry one, or perhaps Sullivan & Son. The irony is, Jamie Tarses is an EP on Men at Work and Happy Endings. Honestly, Men at Work is probably a better show at this point.
No one can actually think that because it’s wrong.
Why would you write that? Are you putting down Men at Work? If you had a clue about this business you’d know that two writers from Men at Work are also on Happy Endings…so what does that say about your moronic retort?
People are allowed to have opinions. In that person’s opinion the show has slipped. Personally, I didn’t like the show after they roped me in with a premise that they never even attempted to pay off — bc that would have been too difficult and would have required actual thought in the writing. Not just “how funny can we be” jokes, that became not so funny. Bottom line is the show doesn’t have any characters we care about or story lines we care about. It’s one big unfunny joke fest.
Men at Work is an abomination of “comedy”, so yes, I’m putting down a show that I know full well is also EPed by Jamie (who has one show that is actually quality and a whole slew of crap). I’m also aware of who works on the show.
If you were to look at the critical consensus behind Happy Endings, Zachary (and you) are both in the minority. People can have opinions… and people can also have bad taste.
You are probably the same person that thinks that because some Hipsters watch Happy Endings, it’s a better investment than Big Bang Theory.
If we’re being fair, who is staffed on what can have little bearing on a show’s overall quality. Just because one writing team is at Men at Work and also Happy Endings means little to the final product of each… though I’d rather have Happy Endings on my resume because it’s actually a good show and not an insipid piece of crap like Men at Work.
We can still make fun of Men at Work, yeah? Because that show is baaaaaad.
Like
Agree 100%. And I can be specific about why. The 3rd season seems more mean spirited, with more of an emphasis on the Max and Penny characters, two of the least likable characters on television today. There’s always been an element of meanness in the show, it just tipped too far in that direction this season. It’s taken some of the light-hearted fun out of the show.
How do you save a show if you’re not a Nielsob viewer??? Must I play ‘Happy Endings’ nonstop on Hulu?? I hope the show gets saved, I love this show!
@Spandex
Sadly there isn’t much you can do to affect the ratings if you aren’t a nielsen viewer. Buying the show on Itunes helps support the show though.
I dont get it. It’s so vague and the wrong people are asking. David Caspe and the actors should be asking, not the network; the network is the one who’s in control. the network could save the show by not cancelling it. Also, it might help if there was some sort of goal, like “hit this number and we’ll save the show.” Maybe they would have offered that up if the fate of the show weren’t already decided.
“You can save Happy Endings”??? What a weird promo! Has this ever happened before — a network airing a promo that flat out says they are going to cancel the show unless viewers start rallying?
The third season has not been bad. Maybe not as great as season two, but it’s still a hilarious show imo. Season three has some very amazing episodes. That being said I don’t think I’ve ever seen a promo from a network asking fans to save a show. Shipping it from Tuesdays, to Sundays, and now Fridays is over the top. It wasn’t doing much worse then Suburgatory and The Neighbors do without a lead-in, but Fridays are too tough a night. The demographic who watches this show will likely not be home.:( If ABC decides to not renew this show then maybe TBS would be able to pick it up or netflix.
It never shipped to Sundays, they aired additional episodes on Sundays after they canceled 666 Park Avenue.
Wow Zachary way to stick w your show after one bad season!
Let’s see how it fares in the Friday night slots for the next few weeks and if it does well, then the network has a reason to save it but if it under-performs like a few other shows they have going right now, then time to pull the plug and move onwards towards something better. Malibu Country won’t last very long anyways.
Where was this network love for Don’t Trust The B–?
Worst. Promo. Ever.
Wow. ABC. You just haven’t figured it out, huh? (Marketing that is) Not quite sure what this does to help “save” the show, maybe we should just be glad that a week prior to airing the show on a new night you are now running an ad or two?
Please save Happy Endings, it is one of my fav comedies and its so funny. I wish TBS would save it
This is very weird. One would think that ABC and the Happy Endings crew are all in on some kind of a joke promo that could mean that the show won’t actually be cancelled, because, well…ABC is participating in it. But do we really want to give them this much credit? Or do I want to be this naive?
The show deserves to stay, they deserve a better time slot and a better treatment. They can’t pretend that this show will suddenly get good ratings after being off the air for two months, not to mention the scheduling disasters they made in january with Apartment 23 and that sundays experiment.
DON’T CANCEL THIS SHOW!!!!! OR TBS PICK IT UP AND PAIR IT WITH COUGAR TOWN!
COUNT DVR & HULU VIEWS!!!! Here’s an idea – use technology that… ALREADY EXISTS to keep ads in pre recodred shows!!! Bet the ratings TRIPLE if they did this! NO ONE UNDER 35 WATCHES TV LIVE ANYMORE! FIX THE SYSTEM and the GOOD shows like Happy Endings will stay on the air!
Then the nets aren’t making any money off people under 35, so why should they care about them?
because they are your future viewers, workers, and buyers of the products that your ads are trying to sell. old people die, dude.
Another day in Hollyweird! Or should I say “Jackieweird” I’M JACKIE!
this makes no kind of sense.
ABC is the network.
why they asking us to save the show?
as they network, they are either going to stand by it and support it or cancel. we have nothing do with it no matter whey they say or think.
You do understand that TV shows are based on ratings, and people watching provide the ratings, right?
There are 25,000 Nielsen boxes out there, ABC is advertising to a tiny percentage of the population.
One of your commenters, “cshifty,” said it perfectly a while back: Air for 2 weeks, 1 week off, air for 2 weeks, 1 week off, air for 3 weeks, 2 weeks off but then air extra episodes on Sundays with zero promotion for 2 weeks, 1 week off, air 2 episodes on the same night, take 2 weeks off, air 2 episodes on the same night then take a month off and move to Friday.
…yeah, so that’s on the viewers. It’s up to US to save this show now? fools.
The only thing really terrible about HE’s still incomplete third season is the lack of consistency its suffered through – by being constantly shuffled and shifted around the ABC schedule, the network seems bound and determined to stifle any kind of momentum or regularity with viewers.
As for the “save this show” campaign, well played ABC. Put this out there now and when you do finally announce the inevitable cancellation you can just place all the responsibility for the shows failure squarely on its fans.
This show is hilarious. Any season. I came in on season 3 and loved it. ABCs constant moving has not helped one bit and asking fans to ave the show is a cute gesture to show that it does intact love the show and cast despite its lack of viewers. Same story with Cougar town and like that show, I pray TBS would pick this little gem up as well.
This show is stupid and forced. Friends for the generation that is not supposed to remember Friends, except no one talks like this. Forced insidey nonsensical banter in place of true humor, forced commentary that never lands, add a black guy (but make sure he acts white), add a gay dude (who is not stereotypical) and he might be the only redeeming quality if he were recast with a better actor with better writers and showcased in an intelligent show
