Critics didn’t particularly like the 13-episode horror series that Netflix introduced Friday. But CEO Reed Hastings told analysts today that Hemlock Grove is “getting viewed by even more subscribers in its first couple of days” than House Of Cards was in February. Overall the company is “feeling very excited” about the original shows, which provide “a very nice redefinition and broadening of what Netflix is.” Even so, the political drama had “a nice impact but a gentle impact” on subscriptions. As a result, he doesn’t believe that the company will see a huge response right away next month when it offers 15 new episodes of Arrested Development. Although he considers it an “absolutely spectacular phenomenon” that’s “going to be great for us,” he adds that the company has “no history of it being a step function.” The CEO says that Netflix will have six or seven original shows this year and will “take that up next year” — though it has “no set number” of originals it wants to offer.

This show was absolute garbage (I somehow made it to episode 7 before throwing in the towel); House of Cards was meandering and soulless, and Lillyhammer is just okay. They shouldn’t be excited about the fact that this is their most-watched original program, if only because that gives the impression that they’re in the business of providing their subscribers complete shit (which Hemlock Grove is). I mean, the whole thing feels like some kind of joke. Everything on display – the writing, directing, and especially the acting – feels amateur and I’ll-conceived. Thank goodness they’ve got Arrested Development coming up.
Thank goodness, someone else also doesn’t drink the kool-aid.
I can usually watch a show’s pilot. I’m a big tv watcher..I love supernatural things…I don’t mind corny or over the top…But I couldn’t even get past minute 20 it was THAT bad.
House of Cards was fantastic. Hemlock Grove has been pretty bad so far in the 1.5 episodes I’ve watched (and that’s all I’ll probably end up watching.)
1/2 is much better than any major network does and better than any cable channel so far outside HBO. Small sample size, obviously. But I like being able to watch everything at once. Complicated shows are better watched all at once because you don’t lose track of storylines.
Some may say it is absolute garbage but if you hold out for the plot to pick up it get a lot better. I hope that netflix produces a second season.
if you actually give it a chance, hemlock grove was one of the most suspenseful shows i have ever watched. right up there with american horror. i want another season.
I have to say that so far, I am liking it quite a bit. Some of the filming is like a “B” movie sound-wise, but the werewolf change is the most imaginative & gruesome I’ve ever witnessed!
The only laughable thing is Janssen’s English accent. Truly horrible!
I watched the first season. It was very slow to develop. I actually started to think it had a chance UNTIL they killed the most interesting character, CASPER. I am still distressed by that brutal act!!! There is a correlation between killing pets and serial killers. You tried to have them show empathy after the fact but it was so repugnant that you couldn’t redeem yourselves. If you have a season two be responsible bring the cat back. You imply cloning do it. Show remorse to an innocent, trusting animal. Otherwise this show has no hope. Without that tender interaction of a pet these characters are too hard and miserable.
It’s to my great satisfaction that I completely disagree with you. Mostly because I would rather not have a comparable perspective to someone whose patience in story-telling borders on what could be considered a Ritalin induced hallucination. The ability to sit down and actually wander through the lives of people dealing with extremis, while actually building context to a developing plot, does require some amount of intelligence. If you had managed to get to the end of the season you might have been thrilled to experience a heavy climax, or you would have just complained about them killing the pet cat had you the lack of a personality as well. Either way, while I enjoy the humor in Arrested Development, the pure fact that you mention it in contrast to this show and House of Cards clearly indicates a persistent desire for instant gratification. You will probably be let down throughout the remained of your life.
I can’t wait until they release their new show “Train Wrecks in Slow Motion,” it should hit even higher numbers.
Why don’t people understand that as trashy as Hemlock Grove is that it serves its audience very well. People love trashy, horror soap operas with pretty young people. It has a diverse cast and is tweaked for an international audience.
Netflix understands its audience. The show is a hot mess but it’s no worse than a Michael Bay movie.
Seriously, Hemlock Grove is just a sexier, tawdry horror soap opera.
Deal with it.
I watched the entire first series of “Hemlock Grove” over two nights. It made little in the way of sense, but it was engaging in, what people have already mentioned, a trashy kind of way.
I actually liked it (for what it was). Would I watch a second season? Absolutely.
And most importantly, it knew what it was, and reveled in it.
I couldn’t stop watching! It was fascinating. Overall, I liked the show so much I already bought the book.
It’s not a soap opera. There’s a fair amount of action involved, what you’re confusing it with is shows that have a lot of polics. If you read a lot of science fiction novels set in space, you know exactly what I mean. Look at Star Wars especially, some of the books are action packed joy rides, others are primarily about the politics of the situation.
Honestly, I was surprised when I saw so many people bashing this show. I thought they did a fantastic job. To each their own I guess
Michael Bay movies last 120 minutes. This travesty is 13 episodes long.
Speaking purely from the 20s and 30s college graduate base, Arrested Development’s return is a massive moment in our media watching. Netflix’s got a stew goin, baby
“Hemlock Grove” makes “Lilyhammer” look like “The Wire.”
House of Cards was also massively overrated. Terrible show.
And if many people recall, Arrested Development had horrible ratings, up until the end. It was cancelled for a reason. I don’t think Netflix will have much more success.
The show has also had 10 years to be discovered on DVD and pick up new fans… now there are dozens of us. Dozens!
It’s tough for an episodic comedy to survive on broadcast TV but Netflix is the perfect format for a show like Arrested Development.
What a shock. Haters…..What will Netflix do without the 40 something, underemployed screenwriter/producer base that reads and comments on deadline? Sell your Netflix stock!!! Now!!! They are doomed!!!
Personally I’ve been enjoying “Hemlock Grove” (on episode 4 currently), but then again I was expecting a bloodier version of “Teen Wolf” – and that’s exactly what I got.
Loved house of cards, hoping hemlock grove isnt more werewolfs and vampires nonsense, arrested development is what we are all waiting for, love having the whole season at once
I’m not particularly a horror fan so I’m not excited about Hemlock Grove but we loved House of Cards. Well done and sad when it ended. Excited about future Netflix shows.
I thought Lilyhammer was great. This coming from a guy who hates dramas. I don’t get why people are bashing it.
As for Hemlock Grove…
No surprise that genre stuff would do disproportionately well on Netflix. However, I have no great desire to watch the second episode of Hemlock Grove. Seems like a show I’ve seen before, nothing new or compelling here.
Certainly among the worst shows in recent history.
I just finished episode 13 of Hemlock Grove and loved the whole thing. I hope a second season comes out. It was very interesting and kept me guessing until the end. They did a good job of wrapping it up in the end.
I have only seen two episodes of Hemlock Grove, but so far I am really enjoying it. It has the vibe of a 21st century Twin Peaks. And I also agree with the commenter who called it a trashier version of Teen Wolf. No one is calling it great tv — but it does feel like a “guilty pleasure.”
Yeah, either someone likes something or they don’t, and with Hemlock Grove you either like it or well, don’t. I think it is an amazing show regardless of what others think. It is so compelling in that it is so mysterious, and eerie. I love it. I started watching Friday night, but I’ve stalled on watching any more because I don’t want it to end… however, going to actually play episode 8 right now……
Hemlock Grove was really good I thought. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
I loved House of Cards with the exception of one of its big twists that took things too far out of plausibility (I’m sure people who have seen it know what I’m talking about).
I tried one episode of this show though and decided it was garbage. Worst part of the whole thing is Famke Janssen’s weakly hammy performance with the horrific attempt at an accent.
Network TV is dead AND the haters above are rain residual of the format… I watched all 13 eps of HOMLOCK GROVE and its one of the best TV shows I’ve ever watched….PEOPLE MAG “TWILIGHT DIRECTED BY SOPHIA COPPLIA” and understaient! CONGRATS!!!!!
Weez, what are you putting hemlock grove up against? Broadcast tele? I love the fact that I can watch all the episodes without commercials. That alone is worth a good review. Do you work for the network?
Boo Hiss…shame on you NetFlix for all the stupid hype..HOC can run cirlces around the numbers for a cartoon like Hemlock Groove..lol
Well I’ll have to watch now. What with all this negative feedback. I guess I’ll have to make up my own mind…
“House of Cards” is brilliant, maybe it’s just a bit over your head Weez…EVERYone i know thought it was great. Lilly…bleh, Hemlock I haven’t seen yet. But HOC is a smash
I love this! Watched all 13 in 2 days! Hope they bring more….
Me too I hope season 2 come soon!!!!!!
Once Netflix opens their books and actually proves to us that anyone is actually watching these shows I will believe. Until then, I call bullshit. I could not get through 5 minutes of this piece of shit. House of Cards was fine but without anything that ever surprised. And please no more sex scenes for KS and anybody. I bet more people did watch Hemlock than HOC because I didn’t believe Hasting’s the first go around. How great would it be for local, network , cable and pay services to just say. “Hey more people watched “Veep” than ever before….I mean way more people watched”.
Love the series, Hemlock Grove, great acting, GloWorm a little corny tho curious on how she was made.
anxiously waiting for the second season of Hemlock Grove. Loved it!
Hemlock Grove is miserably bad. Terrible pacing, no suspense/tension, laughable acting from most of the cast (love her, but poor Famke is embarrassing herself!) and the pilot looked like it was shot on a consumer grade camcorder. House of Cards was at least competently written, acted, and shot.
Still beaten by Season 1 of The Venture Bros.
